Active X components don't run on macs, so why would you select to download it??? Even if you did you would have to select to then run it and provide it with your admin password. Not like windows where you accept the file and you are then screwed.
sophoslab how can i hack the school network or like wsend a virus, coz we have a virus and i wnna make it worser.and i worked in the ict department for my work experience:) so tb
You can't help laughing when Mac users proclaim that Macs are virus free and crash free. If, for some unfortunate reason you have to run a Mac (you're being paid to, held hostage, etc.), at least future-proof it with a firewall and anti-virus. If Macs ever become as popular as you say they will, they will be targeted in the future too. Who knows what undiscovered flaws lie underneath?
:) Creating Trojans isn't exactly illegal ( Well in America at least) and yes mac Malware has been on the rise many people don't realize is that hackers and spreaders try to target a large amount of people that is why you see so many windows viruses but less Mac and * nix viruses but the Mac is getting more and more popular .. as is Mac malware :D
are you guys retarded? As you show you have to accept the download AND installed it yourself. Malware or virus selfinstall. Here the user have to install it.
Yeah, visit Sophos. They are DYING to promote even the remotest possibility of a Mac virus so they can sell their product. The last two Sophos "warnings" were proven to be baloney, and this one is obscure at best. He who controls the meme controls your wallet.
Remember that Sophos only sells to businesses - who are unlikely to make an impulse purchase.
The Mac malware problem is still small compared to Windows, but it's growing. Hopefully demos like this can prove the point to the people who don't believe that any Mac malware exists, or that Mac users can't fall for the same social engineering tricks as their Windows cousins.
what if you just watch streaming? no download what so ever. 100% download free. safe yes?

This is funny as hell. Too bad the company is just trying to scare people into buying their product.
Proof: Symantec, Mcafee, Trend Micro, NOD32, nor CLAM all have NO mention of either of the Sophos created trojans whatsoever.

Sophos-created Trojans?
That's a rather bold claim! We'll expect the FBI to be knocking on our door any day then.. :)
Seriously, the malware is for real and there are infected websites out there. Just make sure you're careful and defend your Macs appropriately.

It's called social engineering. That's how most Windows malware works too.
If you want to watch the video, you'll install the codec.
SophosLabs 2 years ago
serious are a real security dude? Because you can't even make a difference between "social engineering" and malware.
social engineering is used to get an information, malware use a security weakness of the OS or internet browser to install a software or script.

Even though the gist is valid, it's not exactly what I'd call a professional video form a credible company. Rather sad.

You're right - it wasn't made by a professional video team. Our videos are made by guys in the labs!

How many have been infected by this? I suspect zero real-world infections.
ThePreacherMan 2 years ago
Hard to say - but certainly precisely the same technique does successfully infect Windows users all the time.
I don't see any difference with Mac users - other than that they're less likely to be running anti-virus software.
