The instant I saw that guard of Regina's I knew how that fight was going to end: that elbow was everywhere but tight against the body. Naoko knew it from the word go, too: look how many left kicks and knees she tries before finally getting her with that hook.
I loved the scene in "Jackass the movie" where Ryan Dunn had to face Kumagai. The skit was called "Getting your ass kicked by a girl" and sure enough, that's what happened. Ryan Dunn got the sht kicked out of him.
Had Halmich managed to get to her feet and the referee had allowed her to continue, Naoko would have destroyed her. Kumagai was always totally merciless when it came to finishing off stricken opponents.

They were neither against the rules nor against fair play, it's just that Muay Thai is a different sport from American kickboxing, which is apparently what you're used to watching.

I think she will know how to condition her stomach muscles. Kumagai was defintly at the top of her game when this fight was on.

You've not had a properly thrown (Naoko always has great kicks!) Muay Thai swing kick land on you, have you :) I've been doing MT for years, and if technique is good, it would require at least 10 seconds to get your body back under control! With MT, the right snap in the hip turns your leg into a whip with your shin bludgeoning the other person hard enough to send their muscles into spasm. I know through experience that MT is a great teacher of humility :(
Regina went down from a punch, not a kick. Look at 1:06. Kicking had nothing to do with it.

Her name is Naoko Kumagai, originally from Yamanashi, Japan. I don't know what makes you think she's Thai. Kumagai was a very competent southpaw whose ace-in-the-hole was her left leg body kick. She was also one of the few female fighters who could pack legitimte KO power in her punches.

This fight was done in 1994, Regina was only 17 years old and had little kickboxing and almost no muay thai experience. The Japanese girl was spoon fed an easy opponent that night for the Jap fans, kind of like Regina's boxing career.

OK. I was in the arena where this fight took place,and felt a little sick due to the one-sidedness. But Kumagai' career was no way like that of Regina. Kumagai took the sport lot more seriousl than Regina. It was extremely difficult for female fighers to find them quality opponents. Regina of that night just happened to be the bum of the month club for Kumagai.

Who are you clowns that post these know it all answers. Naoko Kumagai is Japanese, as her name would imply. How much research do you guys do on this? This fight was in Japan in the late 80's or early 90's and it is a very young/novice Regina Halmich! Halmich is a former World Kickboxing Champion and a current multi division World Boxing Champion. I think she will know how to condition her stomach muscles. Kumagai was defintly at the top of her game when this fight was on.

Many fighters are trained to tighten the abs the moment before impact to keep light. Its perfectly posible she missed the shot and it went through. also your underestimating the amount of force dealt by her oponent. you try taking that kind of blow suddenly.

You've not had a properly thrown (Naoko always has great kicks!) Muay Thai swing kick land on you, have you :) I've been doing MT for years, and if technique is good, it would require at least 10 seconds to get your body back under control! With MT, the right snap in the hip turns your leg into a whip with your shin bludgeoning the other person hard enough to send their muscles into spasm. I know through experience that MT is a great teacher of humility :(

Regina went down from a punch, not a kick. Look at 1:06. Kicking had nothing to do with it.
And yes, I have had kicks of all kinds land on me since I began formal training in 1979. Some people learn humility from the experience, others learn to parry :-)

Her name is Naoko Kumagai, originally from Yamanashi, Japan. I don't know what makes you think she's Thai. Kumagai was a very competent southpaw whose ace-in-the-hole was her left leg body kick. She was also one of the few female fighters who could pack legitimte KO power in her punches.
