  • Check out Shawn Lane on Google Plus. adios.

  • I would love to have Shawns talent, I don't prefer his style of music but his knowledge and technique are about unsurpassed. I just wish I could get into his music so it wouldn't be such a exercise for me to try and learn something from him.

  • Shit, he is talking and playing those obscene arpegios at the same time??

  • @KenobiM11 no, he's not playing the arpeggios, he IS those obscene arpeggio's. and oh, yea, he's talking

  • xenotype.... you are a DOUCHE NOZZLE...Prove it little girl.

  • @XenoType008 lol. ur funny

  • Shawn: Yeah, I like Paul Gilbert, he's a real nice guy

Shawn's fingers: VRNFESUVIEFHVFDNSVJKBHSDFHUSBVDFHISBVHS DFVJBDFSVDFNSBVKDNSBVDFN SBKBHDBNJLBHNFJKSBDNSBILDSNGLJKSBNJLSKB SKBHDSKBNSLB DKSBNSBNSBKDSNBKSBN KSBNDIBNSLBGNS

  • The only thing i like about Lane's playing is when he plays like me... sad to realize that actually. Most of his actual compositions i don't care for at all.

  • @XenoType008 If anything, all you've ever done is wish you could be a shred of the guitarist Shawn or Paul is. Put up a video, if you're so certain of yourself and that you're better than them. Otherwise, you're just a 45 year old douchebag who probably sleeps in his mom's basement, content to just troll your way out of depression. And believe me, you are a TERRIBLE troll.

  • There at least 5 videos of Lane, playing my licks... that's when i realized i influenced his playing, probably from the redneck Brad meeting Gilbert etc, i heard the tapes of them meeting back in the day, in the late 80's... it was only now years later i realized i did in fact influence them without doubt. Lane might be faster at certain things, but it doesn't mean he didn't get licks from people like me, and obviously others. Gilbert is just a fucking tool and he knows I'm right.

  • Both Gilbert and Lane are next to completely UN-original in every way... I am totally self taught since i was 12, never played a cover tune, both Lane and Gilbert played other peoples music etc, I NEVER HAVE. Only my own music and style since i was 12. I am the real deal, not these guys.

  • @XenoType008 You are an absolute retard. I mean, seriously, did your parents drop you as a baby? Shawn and Paul are, and always will be better guitarists than you. You think that playing covers limits one's ability as a musician? Hardly. If anything, one benefits from experiencing first-hand another's music. Shawn was very much influenced by guitarists like Hendrix, and it was due to this music that he was able to develop his style. Don't put someone down if you have no real stance.

  • @XenoType008 you seem to be a little frustrated. have you ever heard of 'the way it has to be' by lane? unlikely to dislike that, even for a hardcore jazzman like myself

  • i dont know where some people get their information but having known Shawn personally for many years( about 25 years until he died ) i can tell whoever that Shawn did not "rip off " anyone. i have so many recordings that i made or that he gave me where he played so many different styles it would blow your mind . and whoever said he was not humble , you are just fucking stupid . Shawn was the most humble of any gtr player i have ever met.

  • These guys aren't humble they take anything they can get to become famous, believe I know.

  • these guys aren't humble, a ton of my licks made it to Varney through some redneck douche bag and he didn't even mention my name to give me credit. The video with audio of Gilbert and Lane trading licks, that's when i knew without doubt I influenced Lane, he's doing one of my oldest licks and phrases it exactly like i always have. Gilbert is the worst cunt rip-off artist on the fucking planet. Living The Hard Way is based off something i wrote when i was 14 years old I could go on and on.

  • @XenoType008 And that's why you have no tangible proof on your profile. All you have is your word, and no one believes it.

  • @XenoType008 sounds like B.S. to me I knew Shawn and obviously you didnt . and if you were so good at 14 , wheres the tapes ? or were you just more content with writin crap on you tube and too busy to play and conquer the world

  • @XenoType008 You sound like every other jealous and bitter internet badass. Commenting on everything and everyone that confronts him with his own mediocrity and overall useless existence.... Better back all these claims up with some proof....

  • @o0Slipdisc0o I'm 45 one month older than Gilbert, the guy who gave out my music was a redneck piece of shit named Brad, won't give out his last name, but he's a piece of fucking shit. I know what I'm talking about and still trying to get my technique back. I use Logic on my Mac nowadays, so hopefully I'll get some music out finally. I have tons of old cassette tapes of shit when i was playing better, now i use a Gibson ES446 jazz type with clean tone so my style has changed quite a bit.

  • All the greats were humble, super nice guys. No need for egos.

  • All of you saying "best in the world".. c'mon. Check out..

Tommy Emmanuel - Guitar Boogie or Scotty Anderson & Bob Saxton - It Don't Mean A Thing or Bireli Lagrene - I Got Rythm (gerschwin) .. and many others. All with jaw dropping technique and tricks. Shawn couldn't play that stuff.. they couldn't play his stuff.

Seriously, if you are going to talk about "the world", you've got to travel a bit.

  • Shawn Lane makes every other guitarist seem lame.

  • I apologize for not having you subb'd before.

    God bless.

  • Zeus talks about poseidon.

  • Overall he simply states Paul is a nice guy but he like rock n' roll and Shawn likes fusion.

  • shawn good pauls good...the difference is shawn goes jazzy speed and paul goes prog blues and neo classical speed..at least i think they respect each other.one thing about paul is if he jazz up a little bit then u know with the amazing speed he got will sound like ...shaw...no ...paul gilbert the great.

  • Shawn Lane didn't die, he just got back on the mothership and went home.

  • Funny I grew up in the 80's playing guitar. I have never heard of Shawn Lane until now. I wonder why that is? Why was he under the radar? I have like 30 guitar player magazines from 87 - 1991 and need to look through them again to see if I overlooked his name. He should of been on every cover then. He was such an awesome musican, but from watching these videos also a humble awesome kind person. RIP. Thanks for posting these so I could discover Shawn, and have his influence in my playing.

  • @aurosne It's a damn shame that musicians of this calibur don't recieve the recognition they deserve. I read a story (I don't know if it's true), that Shawn Lane and Zakk Wylde were to share the stage together for some performance, but Sharon Osbourne would not allow for it to happen, due to Shawn's weight/size...completely fucking ridiculous. I wish this man was still alive and well, he is in my opinion, the greatest guitarist to have ever lived. R.I.P.

  • @azkeyz what the hell are you nagging about now?

  • Wise words from shawn lane on paul gilbert

My problem is shawn lanes so called fusion smells like elevator music for mexicans.

I may get alot of heat for sayin that but I have no choice but to be honest

I guess I'm just upset because with shawn lane it feels forced.

just not alot I can really use to spite how good it may sound at first.

you can hate me all you want for being a little anti shawn lane.

but you best not dare fault me for loving buckethead.

  • @azkeyz Chick Corea,Allan Holdsworth,John Coltrane is for you elevator music for mexicans???

  • @azkeyz

Shawn Lane is Bucketheads Hero!!! Didn't you know?

Brian Carroll said, "Shawn Lane is by far

the greatest guitar player that ever lived."

Are you sure you're a Buckethead fan?!

That's okay, I didn't know about Shawn either until

    Buckethead said that... And...

Buckethead was right! Buckethead was right!!!

Buckethead even does some Shawn licks, fact!

  • @azkeyz there's guitarist people look up to, like buckethead, slash, blah blah... then there's guitarist those guitarist look up to, shawn lane, guthrie govan, blah blah... im pretty sure if shawn lane wanted to wear some funny looking outfit and produce music that was topping the charts at the time then he would be way more famous than he is... but ask any one of your favorite guitarist and i guarentee they will know this dude and speak of him in high regards

  • Best left hand until now, RIP master.

  • Hey Bucket Bots ! Check out my Guitar Cover Of Big Sur Moon. Make A Comment , Subcribe And I'll check out your channel , videos and subcribe too! Peace Chicks Chickens and Cocks :D ! lol.. BE sur to comment on my page

  • is a good or bad coment about gilbert, i don´t understand so much english

  • @yngwiemalmsteen8 Good, and fun at the same time.

  • @yngwiemalmsteen8 Shawn LOVED Paul. He played Piano at Paul's wedding. We got to meet Paul when Mr. Big warmed up for Rush in Memphis. Paul couldn't have been nicer.

  • It just goes to show you that professional guitarists all respect each other, and they will never compare themselves to another player or declare themselves better than anyone else. They all realize that people play in different styles and that there is no better or worse.

  • @QuotidianHegemony

Well said. It's mostly non-musicians who engage in "who's better" discussion. Music enjoyment is subjective. Certainly there are better and worse players, technically, but when a musician reaches a certain level of facility, it becomes a moot argument. At the level of an Eric Johnson, Paul Gilbert or Neal Schon, there isn't a better, just a more preferred.

These wonderful players should be cherished for their talents and not belittled with immature competition. Truly.

  • @QuotidianHegemony Well said! :)

  • hes really good thats for sure, but for those saying hes in a league of his own, but what about michael angelo batio, hes insanely good, hes right there with shawn

  • @DangleSan MAB has an incredible technique but even he cannot be compared to Shawn. If you pay attention to MAB's licks you will see that they are more "straight" phrases, lots of fast alternate triplets and sweeping arpeggios over a rock rithmn. Shawn plays like was two guitar at the same time, his patterns are almost impossible to play - his hand stretch impossible to do. I think only one player is on the same level, Allan Holdsworth.

  • @xuxis2008

I would agree completely with this except for just one guitarist to be added to Shawn and Allen, and that would be Tony Macalpine.

  • @DangleSan no doubt hes insanely good. but if you watch shawn you can see the way he plays is different, hes changing frets so fast its faster than ive seen mab do it.

  • that was hilarious when Shawn goes" he gets about 20 min into the jazz fusion stuffand then his brain sorta explodes" haaaa

  • can someone please provide subtitles? i can barely hear him, and i know what he's saying is very important. thanks guys

  • can someone please provide subtitles? i can barely hear him, and i know what he's saying is very important. thanks guys

  • where'd u get these vids man?ur chanel fucking rules pieriod.thanx agian MYSHAWNLANEVIDEOS!

  • I want to see Shawn Lane again :(

I want to see Jason Becker play again!

These are the people that've made this world a beautiful place.

  • @Najeepain I've been following Paul since around 1992.... i have most of his vids and albums!!

  • Shawn Lane was amazing, but I have more fun listening Paul Gilbert's music.

  • excuse me... honestly, I can't understand anything he's saying, the vid is just too noisy, can anyone transcribe?

  • @KuraiX I think we already did a while back, if you have a look right down the comments you should find it.

  • Paul Gilbert is great but Shawn Lane was beyond amazing!

  • Shawn doesn't even look like he's even trying to shred while he's talking and is probably quicker than anyone could ever get. God unbelievable; wait a sec............. HE IS GOD!!!

  • @MaLaKaThIsS Shawn never had to try to shred . it just poured out of him . even 5 minutes after waking up , he could shred your face off . no warm up needed. he had a true gift.

  • my favorite picks are the 1-3mm stubbys. The worst pick i've evr used was jim dunlop around 0.30 something mm. It was as thin as paper.... What the hell would you need something like that for?

  • playing nylon strings with a pick or playing soft acoustic melodies or pieces where u want to sweep across multiple strings like when u play clean chord sounds and want to really blend notes together.

The is a subtleness to a very thin pick versus a thick one. The thick one will let you gain maximum speed because no time is wasted on the pick flexing between picking strings, but the thin pick can generate some smooth sounds especially on clean tones.

  • @AaronKSparks I prefer a softer pick on my 12 string vs a harder pick on my Strat

  • I use a .60mm pick, and I find it gives me the most speed.

    It's about technique actually.

A thinner pick CAN and WILL play faster than a thicker one if you hold it right. The problem is a lot of players like to hold the pick like | against the string, so you get the flex, while I believe it SHOULD be held like / against the string. That way, there's a minimal amount of surface area hitting the string, but it has the most rigidity. It definitely works.

  • @hitsugaya64 A 6 cm pick... Wow, That is a big one...

  • lol you missed the . dude. it's not even 1cm thick

  • @TheLordHodne loflmao, I can not imagine myself playing with that xD

  • @hitsugaya64 I personally like to change the angle to get different sounds. / more agressive and -- calmer

  • i personally think thin picks are where "it's" at brotha-dude-man

  • @Vantenkiest i like some thinner picks for some chord stuff but i mean a .30mm pick was just crazy thin.

  • @TheWhocares233 I agree man I play 3mm stubby and I can't play with something else now

  • dunlops are really good picks the 1.5mm but you don´t find them so easy...

so i always buy Fender extra heavy white..cheap and really good..the only thing is that the grip goes away after 2 days so it gets slippy if you got hand sweat...other than that pretty good..and i use my lucky fender pick...its been shredded on for like 8 months 2 hours a day minimum..so now you get that squeeeling sound when you turn the pick a little on the side...and that on a fender squiire for 99 bucks!

  • can't forget lane's personal idol, holsdworth

  • haha its funny how to is talking and just playing the guitar

  • paul gilbert is amazing, but in the world of guitar i dont think anyone will ever be able to beat shawn lane. sure some people come close such as gutherie, but shawn lane will ALWAYS be in a league of his own

  • Comment removed

  • thats pretty accurate, but a close inspection of Frank Gambale verifies he is on par with Lane

  • @spooner1957

seven if somebody does get as technical as shawn lane, they won't be as technical as shawn lane. why? because shawn lane did what guitarists thought was impossible. the only reason why somebody would attempt to get on the technical level of shawn is because they know it can be done. before shawn nobody thought that the stuff shawn did could be done. shawn lane invented that level of technicality and will always be the most technical in that way.

  • @GoodMetalFTW but there's not much musical point of getting to that level when you can live with just decent guitar chops and spend more time and energy practicing more useful things like actual songwriting, composing, or perhaps even jazzy improvising etc... instead of just focusing on straight technicality...

  • @razorman916

true, but usually if you're trying to reach that level of technicality you already know how top apply that technicality to your music. i like learning technical things just to be technical, but at the same time i always learn to apply it to jamming and making music. music takes priority over pure technicality any day though.

  • @GoodMetalFTW shawn plays too fast to where it sounds like a laser beam..now dont get me wrong laser beams are cool but i dont like to listen to them at different frequencies for 5 solid minutes....i dont wanna take anything away from the guy because he is really good...but in my mind paul gilbert is much better in terms of rhythm in his music...

  • @blazehand187

not always. with his high gain tone yes, but with his low gain tone it sounds much more sophisticated.

  • @GoodMetalFTW Yeah, i beleive you.....hes not the kind of player who wants a whole lot of gain...it seems to butcher his style...low gain smooth tones seem to be what he wanted the most...

  • @blazehand187

yes, but i do believe some of his songs deserved a high gain tone. rules of the game definitely deserved a more high gain tone and i think grey pianos flying did too.

  • @blazehand187

Paul gilbert is actually a rhythm junkie. It's kind of guaranteed that when you listen to his songs, there's always going to be this delightful pulsating flow in his guitar work, soloing included. Shawn is more of a fluid-centric player imo where the rhythm is more of a groundbreaker instead of a focus for his melodic structures.

  • @spooner1957 I think Jason Becker dose!! Just type in "Jason Becker noolding"

  • @spooner1957 This is so so true . Shawn Lane is ultimate , and also his compositions are amazing . Get you back for example.. and many more . In his writings , it really isn't anything but music , he doesn't need to show what he can do reffering to skills

  • I love watching Shawns different styles in these videos!

I remember when he referred to a chickenpicking technique and just shredded away with it in 20 secs!

When I see his videos I just think "WUT?" and go back a few secs to see what he did, I usually think chickenpicken, which I just began on 2 months ago but will never come close to Shawn!

  • @spooner1957 If You think about music You're not about to beat anyone :) Cheers!

  • @spooner1957 You wrote shit ! There so many guitarplayers in the world ,nobody is the best and nobody plays in his own leage .Maybe you don't hear so many guitarplayers, otherwise when you are a guitarplayer you must know that fusion is fusion, rock is rock ,flamenco is flamenco, fingerstyle is fingerstyle ................ !I want to hear Shawn Lane when he played flamenco ! You know Paco de Lucia ?

  • @Maiodidi Amen

  • @Maiodidi Exactly! All of you saying "best in the world".. c'mon.

The world of guitar virtuosity doesn't begin and end with "fusion/shred".

  • @spooner1957 OMG man.. i absolutely agree with you... shawn lane y so far above the others.. then in a far far second place is guthrie.

  • both of them are amazing guitarists with totally differant styles of playing i love paul gilbert but shawn lanes just effing insane

  • Damn if it makes Gilbert's brain explode it must be crazy!!!

  • What on earth are you on about....... what has 'singing' got to do with being a better 'guitarist'..... and what's this all about one of them "winning"??

Have you not seen any of the many videos or recordings of Shawn 'IMPROVISING' complex bebop style lines on guitar while singing the same notes at the same time..... way more difficult than simply singing pre-learned lyrics over playing chords.

    Nevermind.

  • HOLY crap you just hyped up Shawn Lane even more for me. Mind giving me a few links where hes doing that? I'm trying to get into Lane more.

  • Shawn did it all the time over the years, but here are just a couple of examples off the top of my head where he does it, (i can't post links here, but look up these 2 videos) :

Shawn Lane & Aquarium Rescue Unit - "Stand Up People" (Newby's - 21st July 1995)

Shawn Lane - Rice with the Angels (Wetlands, NYC - 30th Apr 97)

    Hope that helps a bit.

  • thanks man

  • does paul gilbert sing?

  • yes..good one too

  • some times

  • Yes he most certain does. He iis definitely on the Deep Purple tribute album!! He is quite good!!

  • sometimes but not really

  • well he's not quite right about paul gilbert, he does quite a lot of classical music. more than 20 minutes lol.

  • Actually, Paul got to know Shawn back in the 80's, so that could be when Shawn started to get Paul into classical music.

  • i seriously doubt it, theres some classical lesson with paul were he sites that he used to listen to his parents classical music as a child and transcribed it by ear....

  • yeah thats right

  • not back in that time lane got him into that

  • he didn't say anything about classical music, he said jazz, and he's right, paul gilbert's style isn't coming from piles of knowledge of music theory, you never really see him play chord changes, and use substitutions, he plays relatively simple stuff, mostly scalar ideas with the odd arpeggio, but executes it much better than most people out there, which is why he is so successful. Wheras shawn was a musical mastermind and everything he plays, regardless of speed, is harmonically perfect.

  • I really dig both Shawn and Paul's but I agree with what you say. Alot of paul gilberts stuff is pretty straight forward where as Shawn was out of this world!

  • @collisster

i guess you've been missing some paul gilbert then...

i was going to bother explaining but... nevermind... if you can't or don't want to know it... just don't

tired of explaining things to those who are closed for understanding things that are not what they really wanted

  • @collisster i would agree with u on that. both flawless players but lane holds the trophy for knowledge in jazz. i personally dont like shawn lanes stlye but its opinion. i prefer gilbert, hes my favourite player coz he knows when to play fast / slow and doesnt over do it.

  • @collisster Tottally agree. One thing is to shred over simple rock patterns, another entirely different thing is to shred over jazz variations.

  • Guitar Is Great....

  • i like the 2mm stubby's.... they are indented so even after pizza you can hold them without slipping. thier great for soft floppy picking or grinding down harder....

  • "even after pizza"...... LOL!

  • lol, it's a common ritual with pizza, but never discussed when usin a pick, heh.

  • Are you telling me you play guitar after pizza without washing them?

For your poor guitars sake, I hope your joking.

  • no joke..... i do wash my hands most of the time but cleaning guitars daily can take up playing time.... and i don't gig much so nobody cares around the house....

  • Lets just hope you never sell that guitar to a poor unknowing soul.

  • nah, it's my custom prototype fender bullit... not for sale...

  • I wonder what hes playing while hes talking. somone should have plugged in his guitar.

  • his volumes just turned down..shawn was always shredding when speaking anytime he had a guitar in his hand

  • that is one beautiful motherfucking guitar

I wish ibanez RG's had a steeper headstock tilt ala Explorer style like that soloist has

  • jim dunlop 3mm stubby's. fast and smooth, enough said :)

  • Jazz 3 black picks are total ownage!

  • black or red

  • I like Black Jazz 3's. better grip, not too different from red though.

  • arent the black and red ones the same exact grip cause its just different color o.O

  • Pretty much, The black ones are a little different once u use both for like a month, black ones feel a little better; to me at least, and john petrucci uses the black ones so they must be better :P

  • LOL. Well since idk if their that different for fact i guess i have to buy a pack of black ones since i usually get red due to i think pp likes the black ones more and they get sold out. And sometimes im too lazy to say "yeah i want the black jazz 3 picks not the red ones."

  • so do you guys use the XL ones or the small ones?

  • I use the small ones. They get really comfortable once you adapt to it... then again like anything you adapt to it gets comfortable. I prefer small picks over big ones.

  • I love the fact that whilst he's talking he seems to be working out some massively complex solo in his head without any effort whatsoever...

  • Jazz III ULTEX = win

  • Not sure where the pick discussion came from, but I love the Dunlop Tortex Jazz picks.

  • I use dunlops .73 mm it gets the job done for me ^_^

  • 1mm Ultex for me. :D

  • that's pretty big :D I do prefer the bigger picks over the smaller ones tho :3

  • I used .73mm for a long time and super light gauge strings, but lately I've been playing a LOT and the super lights were bending too easily under my fingers.

    Bigger strings and picks now.

  • yup, although I use nine gauge strings since I first started playing guitar, I hardly ever get bigger ones.

  • "but I'm trying to convert him a little bit" I think it worked! Shawn was the best.

  • I used to use the jazz3's when I was really building my picking, now I prefer to use to the dava control picks

  • I don't know about jazz3s but I also use dava control by dave storey and as long as your not playing down tunning they're fuckin great

  • Everyone who viewed this video misses you a lot shawn.

    We miss you man.

  • Shawn Lane's technique is the BEST!!!! Anyone know what picks he used?

  • Jim Dunlop Jazz III

  • Sweet. I just had to know. Thanks man!

  • same one I use. amazing pick!

  • lol, me too! just checked then. Crazy.

  • That's really weird! My pick literally riped in half when I was playing today, so I went and got a new pick...I juat so happened to pick out a Jim Dunlop Jazz III...I had no idea that's what he used XD

  • Most shred guitarists use em! Best picks ever!

  • I'm more of a Dunlop Gator Grip 2.0 mm kinda guy. Jazz III picks don't have enough pick for me to hold. They're still not bad though. I've used much worse.

  • the make the jazz 3 XL now for people who still like the sharpness of the jazz 3 but dont like how small it is.

  • I use them sometimes, but I try not to because if someone hands you a guitar and a regular pick and says "play something cool", you just look at the bloody great paddle of a pick in your hand and say "how the hell am I supposed to play with this"? I'm trying to get used to Jim Dunlop .88 picks again.

  • I know what you mean; I tend to just bring use random picks each day from the pile. Different picks can be used for different textures and sounds though, so it'd be ideal to be able to use different types and then incorporate those textures into music.

Does anyone know which Jazz II Shawn Lane generally used? There are red nylon ones, black 'stiffo' ones in my local music store.

  • From my experience, most of the people use the black 'stiffo' ones.

I can give you a quick overveiw of the ones I've used. The red nylons, ultex's, and black stiffo's.

The black ones have the sharpest attack, but they can feel almost too firm at times.

The red nylons have less attack than the black ones, and they go over the strings easier.

The ultex ones have the lightest attack of them all, and are extremely easy to use, but getting a decent volume with shred can become difficult.

  • Thankyou. Ill experiment with The red and black; i Guess i'm not at a loss by not being able to use the ultex ones.

  • You're welcome. You're definately at no loss if you want to shred. They're ok for blues and the slower solos in hard rock songs, though.

  • Yeah, this is very true. There aren't many guitarists in this area, so I don't have to worry about that. =D

  • Im a big shred guy and i heard about Jazz 3s so i decided to try em out! i dident like um loads at first but i got used them in a matter of days! i used to use the Jim dunlop 1mm nylon picks! still have um just in case i get bored of jazz 3's! but i just love jazz 3's too much

  • I didn't realize that when someones name is mentioned you are immediately obligated to pay them a "token compliment" or else you are a...

they are good friends, Shawn is a great guy and there is not a bad thing you can say about him. He is IDOLIZED...

    BY YOUR FAVORITE GUITARIST!!!

  • "Well I don't know. I guess about six years ago, aww he had know about me though Mark Varney for along time, and what Mark Varney always does is he get people on the phone (I mean a long time ago) he use to and he starts playing these tapes over the phone you know. So I think he had some bootleg videos and tapes of me. And when ever he'd talk to P.G. and these other people he'd subject them to this tape. Paul Gilbert is a nice guy into a lot of good music.. Beatles he's not a big fusion playe
