I'm currently studying sound recording and it helps me sort out good from bad info on the web. Dave is right on the money! Are those Ns10 in the back?
So, the way IM doing things is Guitar amp-> mic->interface (with input gain control)-> USB -> Cubase. Now, Since I have that gain control on the interface, do I need a mic pre amp? Cause it seems thats basiclly what the mic pre is for. And I have quite a bit of amp noise goin on when I turn down the volume of my guitar to play a softer part (the noise just shows through more) How do I get rid of this without deadening the recording or my guitar level? thanks.
How's the Boss br1600 for a decent recording? I heard it has great results, but can it come close to sounding like a studio recording if you know how to use it well?
thats what he's talking about at like the 6:45 mark, with a mike pre amp and a converter built in
i have an emu 0202, and use it for mike and guitars.. i find its great for mikes, but it doesn't handle direct guitar plugins very well
it also came bundled with some lite recording softwares, which was awesome for me, because i am just getting started, and wanted to experiment with features in different programs.. mine came with cubase 4 le, sonar le, and a bunch of plugins from various companies
hey im like poor man status i have a blue snowball a 15 watt crate and a strat is it still possible to sound like most band recordings or do i need all that stuff
i have a problem with my mic pre. i run my sm57 to a studio projects vtb-1, its in great condition and works fine with bass DI and vox
but when i mic my hi gain stack, it crackles. yet my LED's show that its only at -8dB!! not even near 0db! i've tried the pad, changing the input impedance, even turning down the stack. nothing. i can't get the LED's to light up without that crackling, but ONLY with my amp.
I am new to recording. I was using a POD XT Live. Now I'm micing a Boogie combo & a Bugera combo 1 for the left pan and 1 for the right on rhythm. I run into a Tascam DP02 with built in premics and export tracks to Audacity via USB cable. Tascam was only $350 used and I had all the other gear from gigging. Cheap way to get rollin and the amps sound awesome micd with 57s. Thanks Dave!!
I know avalon preamps are awesome for acoustic guitar/instruments and vocals - how does it go with electric guitar? I have a mid to high end transistor preamp and was thinking of getting a tube pre - if you've a/b it with a transistor preamp please let me know your results. Thanks man.
Avalon are the only pres I've used on my electrics for my recordings because I wanted what was coming out of the speaker to go into the computer uncolored. I love them.
You can buy my record at daveweiner . com / store and hear for yourself.
Damn Dave, I'm impressed. Your vids have shown me that you definitely know your stuff. Yet more impressive, is your ability to teach what you know as well as you do. Thanks man.
Consumer mixer's mic pres are pretty bad sonically. A step up from that would be audio interfaces with built in pres/converters but those still leave a lot to be desired. Mixers and interfaces are a great way to start. But for really good mic pres, expect to pay $1000 and up for 1 channel.
Hey, i have a question for you! Instead of having all of the seperate rack components can i put the microphone into a mixer which already has a mic preamp, eq, and if so how do i connect the mixer to my computer? Do i need some kind of direct box or something? Also does the mixer have to have a poweramp?
This is a newbie question, but can you use that same set up for vocals and acoustic guitar? Input from anyone would be nice. Thanks!
I love the videos btw! I'm really starting to understand how recording works! Thanks!

im interested in the all-in-one mic-pre/converter idea. what computer software is required when using that?

any DAW. PT has dedicated hardware, all the others are open.

Modern mixers have usb or firewire built into them to connect into the comp.

Dave, when you say you use a moderate amount of compression on the way to tape, around how much compression are talking about? 1 to 3 or more?
stackedfat 3 years ago
I'm using 2:1 right now for my new record. Very very light compression.
