The ps3 version doesn't support 2 player play which sucks donkey balls, actually none of the SNK minis support true simultaneous 2 player play which is stupid.
I loved this arcade game, 2player was awesome. I never made it to the helicopter though, way too hard...Commando was also good! Double dragon, original Street fighter, Rampage, Shinobi, Golden axe, Gauntlet, Atered beast, Robocop...
Fuck this game. The control is WORSE than dragon's lair, and I am not even kidding. The simple act of turning around feels like you're in a semi-truck trying to do a U-turn indoors. You walk slow, and I mean SLOW. Like, Uncle Fester could take a nap and 3 shits in a race with you and he'd still win, even with the poison debuff. Of course, the enemies are TWICE as fast, and the projectiles are even faster. On top of that, you get 3 lives, NO continues, and you die in one hit. GOOD LUCK!
Actually, the arcade version of this has just been released as a PS3 mini on PSN, and I'd imagine it's got a port to XBLA now, too. Still handles a little wonky, as L/R rotates your character, and man, is it BRUTAL.
While the NES port was somewhat beatable, unless somehow you got spawn-stuck in the center and unable to move during that part where you move through the side gaps of the fort walls (breaking bug!), the arcade version is a quarter-munching nightmare...
... Between the infalliable numbers of enemies, and how beefed up most of them are/were (ones armed with Super Grenades, especially), there are some sections that are absolutely IMPOSSIBLE to get through without simply quarter-grinding your way through them. And the side-oriented arrow traps seem both invincible and undodgable; there's no way you'll move through them quick enough to escape being killed, and there's no break in their firing rate either.
The one big thing I like about shows like this is that they show what the game is and how the gameplay works. When I see a game in a used game store and never heard of it, this show and others like it help me get an idea as to whether or not you would be interested in it. For example, I've been watching this one now and having seen a few copies around in a few stores in my area, I think I may go buy this game at some point, thanks to this review. It seems interesting.
playstation blog just said this game is coming out on july 19th it says it will be one of the minis but idk if iyt will be the old school one or what.
Judging from how well duke nukem did I suppose not but then again we should give serious sam a chance at bat if serious sam does well then we should the door for ikari warriors will be opened.
@icgd1337r Absolutely. I remember Guerrilla War being the business back in the day. The original Ikari just looks too stark. 2 and 3 were pretty good, though.
Maybe this question has been asked a million times before, but when I had this game as a kid (1986ish) I , (like many others) got to the very end of the game, only to find that the road stopped. In other words, I dead ended . I was alive, all enemies dead, but there I stood, after killing off the "main bad guy"..no where else to go...I had to just turn off the game. No announcement that I had won or anything...just sat there...
Ikari wariors is one of my favourite retro games. I most enjoy playing it on the Sinclair ZX Spectrum, the rubber keys and joystick are a great combination.
Every time I almost beat this game I'd get stuck due to a glitch and it was great. With ABBA you could keep going, but it was only a matter of time before you got glitch-fucked.
The Atari ST version wasn't bad, but not great either, what I found best for some reason was the Amstrad 464CPC version. No idea why.
Both of which look different from this NES version. Not necessarily better graphics, but the maps feel different and there are IIRC, less objects in this version.
Great memories i remember playing this game for hours on end with my little sister. come to think of it though we never did beat the game, always got stuck in one of the walls. Gotta love the nintendo gliches.
@TortureFromWithin I even tried to beat the game with game genie codes. I ended up getting very far in the game and then getting stuck in a wall after dying. Lol. I wasn't happy either. I feel your pain.
I had this game, but for the 2600. Now THAT was a BITCH to play! The control stick only shot diagonaly 50% of the time! But what a game huh? I was such a manly figure!
yeah, me and my buddy played this all the time when I was a kid; you're so right though, it has not aged well. I have no idea why we played it so much. possibly because the "meatheads with bandanas and machine guns" theme was really, well, pretty cool when you're like 8.
An nes game where you play as a shirtless guy with a bandana and a machine gun....that's great SNK but i have to be honest Konami made a game with a very similar concept that was a whole lot better.
I'd love to see this game with updated graphics sort of like what they did with Bionic Commando, maybe they could call it Ikari Warriors Reloaded or Rearmed or something like that.
Good memories. As a kid, me and dad could play this title for hours each night. (Though, it took Jetboot Jack for him to play without me around.) And, I do agree...if Contra can get modern games, Ikari is well overdue.
I'd like to see someone complete this game using just the first set of lives/guys you get. I remember using the "continue trick" over and over and over and sometimes getting stuck behind some of the walls with no enemies to kill me... then you had to wait for the missiles to come flying at you and you BEGGED to get hit, sometimes you did, and sometimes not.
Wow, I haven't seen this game since 1987 and it's amazing how the memory I have of it is so different. Back then this was considered quality graffics & the truth is that we all loved it & played for hours & hours. What was good about this game was that you could play doubles and it was perfect. I can remember playing with my best friend at the time. The good old days when nintendo ruled the world. I miss those days a lot but now it just wouldn't measure up to our advanced brains.
It's funny how now this game looks so fake and stupid. It's truly amazing how technology works with the mind. I bet twenty five years from now the games today will seem so small and unappealing compared to the games they will have in that future. Can you imagine the virtual reality games that we will be able to hook up our heads to. It could easily become like the movie The Matrix. Or like Star Treks Hollow deck. It's truly amazing how much games have improved and they keep improving.
Actually, I don't want to bother looking through the comments if someone mentioned this. But the protagonists of this game, Clark in blue, and Ralph in red, did make the roster for playable characters in Metal Slug 6 & 7.
Oh god yes I agree the new controllers would make for a better Ikari Warriors...
This was the first game I bought when I bought my NES, they where out of the systems that had SMB and I couldn't wait any longer lol
Honestly I felt kind of ripped off when I bought it on the NES the game is great the controls are what was the let down.. Heavy Barrel is very close you might like that one too. or Jackal or Time Soldiers.
Anyway MAME FTW ;) and thanks for the memories! Good review !!!
I have to say as far as NES games where the heroes are shirtless men with bandannas and machine guns, Contra is a wayyy better game than Ikari Warriors.
There's actually a bug in this game that makes it impossible to beat without the cheat code. I worshiped this game in the arcades back then--but this NES version was a disappointment. (But I still played it for HOURS AND HOURS)
No. Ikari Warriors 2 and 3 was the sequels to this game. Heavy Barrel was another game that played a lot like this game from the same type of genre. Heavy Barrel was one of my favorite arcade machines, back in the day, too.
when i played it for nes and made it to what i thought was the end in 1 game with out using the abba cheat i was blown away. 3 times the size of the arcade makes this game awsome
I just can't stand the speed of the character! Man, IT'S WAR!!!!!! You cannot walk your way through! You have to run, sometime crawl and always shoot people in the face. If the character is supposed to be so confident that he walk with no shirt, all oil up at a speed that he can be admired by every insects of the jungle, they should have give him only a knife with limited use, that would have been a good reason for been hard!! I prefer the sequels and Jason 13th which, means a lot!
I really like Ikari Warriors but if I had to choose between Ikari Warriors and Contra I would choose Contra without thinking twice. Really fun game though, it reminds me a lot of Commando for the NES.
Yeah it would be nice to see some games like this now days. Last thing I played close to this on the PS3 was Commando 3 and it was too dam easy. Anyhow awesome video man.
I didn't like this game, but it had a certain sort of classy unlikability. Like how you know fine art is good by how its treated and presented, and how you know a video game player is good if he has "itz" "v2" or altcaps in his name.
The ps3 version doesn't support 2 player play which sucks donkey balls, actually none of the SNK minis support true simultaneous 2 player play which is stupid.

Never saw the arcade version of it, but I DID see an arcade version of the third one. That looked pretty sweet.

Gotta love how 80s video games were filled with Rambo knock off and the 70s games had Star Wars knock offs.

I really like Ikari Warriors but if I had to choose between Ikari Warriors and Contra I would choose Contra without thinking twice. Really fun game though, it reminds me a lot of Commando for the NES.

I like Heavy Barrel more. That game was kick ass.

If you look at Super Stardust HD it has the same control idea as the arcade version of Ikari Warriors.

I didn't like this game, but it had a certain sort of classy unlikability. Like how you know fine art is good by how its treated and presented, and how you know a video game player is good if he has "itz" "v2" or altcaps in his name.
