Yeah, I think Zhang is little bit arrogant from a Chinese point of view. Because of the competitiveness of Chinese national team, since there are just too many good players.I've heard it was pretty brutal over there. They have trained players into beasts. it is more likely a show to his teammates.
Even has dominant as the Chinese in table tennis, they sometimes have to pray too. Liu Guoliang looks up in the Heaven and thanks it. Every now and then miracles happen and a European or Korean player would win it by beating one Chinese after another, which is an extremely difficult task. Even if Timo beats Zhang Jike, he would have to also beat Wang Hao.
To all the folk out there who are upset or disapproving of ZJK's "cho"ing or "excessive celebrations". If Timo Boll did the same thing, I doubt anyone would disapprove. Those kind of expressions are ridiculously common in Table Tennis. It's only because these guys are televised that we notice them, but if you visit smaller leagues around the world, you'll find that many of them celebrate winning points far more exuberantly than these guys.
I just don't get acts of celebration in general, it boggles my mind. I've played tennis and table tennis for most of my life, and I never celebrate openly in tournaments or otherwise, strikes me as rude. Small gestures are fine, but yelling is just silly.
@Mablak This is World Championships we're talkin about. Even in other sports, if it's a world event of course it's relevant. And athletes do that to boost their confidence in the game. It's useful for them...
Did youtube get stupid or is it just me. Awhile back, when you get a rely from someone in your inbox, you click on the link and there goes your message. Now, you can't find that anymore, making hard to make a rely after reading what the other person had to say.
I try to improve my side-rotated services so opponent can't return it using spin, so I don't understand why those professionals serve long balls good for spin.
China will always produce world champion table tennis players (Helps when you have over a billion citizens)...generally robots with great technique.
Zhang fits the same mold but is different he shows emotion...but for me to much! Every point he wins he needs to scream. He reminds me of Monica seles, sharapova on a tennis court. SHUT UP!!! I hope one day there might be a player almost as good as Waldner!!
@robinho1979 if Waldner really wanted Europe to rise to challenge China, then he shoulda retired a while ago to search and raise raw young talents himself instead of hording the competition spots for himself with no chance of winning for being so old.
Chinese people are smart and hard working, in general speaking.
But their attitude is not quite of good. That's why their country has more than 5000 years of history but living standard is lower than Europe and the US.
They need to be humble to learn more until reaching to the top of the world, as their wish.
@thuynguyen111 massive generalisation, do you even know the specifics? What you're saying is basically due to Chinese people's "bad attitude" has caused the "country's living standards to be poor for over 5000 years". Nice generalisation mate.
This is partially correct. I agree there is a need for improvement, but there is also a miss in culture translation.
China has a lower living standard than western countries now, but that does not extend to 5000 years. Just look at the world GDP for the last 500 years, China has 350+ years in world leader position, and around 1820 China has 30% world GDP.And soon as projected, it will be the world leader again by 2020.
I don't know about what you said. All I know is in the 20th century, Chinese living standard is lower than many European countries. By the year of 2020, that won't be changed a lot. All i know is without trading with the US, China couldn't be like this today. So, the point is there's something that Chinese should learn from the westerners.
One example: let be proud of what we have in the present. Don't bring up the past or base on the wishing future to be proud of.
the problem is that in reality its only timo boll vs china...no one else in germany can compete at this level....china can have 20 players if allowed in the olympics and the worlds...chinese are all top level...
@kmml1972 Well, Ovtcharov beat Zhang Jike in 2009 danish open, so I'm not too sure I agree. He's also beaten Wang Liqin in 2007 or something. But in general, you are correct.
@forestloves well on 2009 zhang was nobody really...and in 2007 wang ligin was out of the chinese team cause he wasnt playing well....but yeah ovtcharov is a good player...enough to beat say upto top 10 maybe in the world, but i trully believe that he wont anytime soon become top 5 in the world in other words i dont think that he can acomplish what timos done...if he plays ma long or wang hao or zhang jike at the moment ovtcharov would get stumped...
I don't care too much, though, that Sweden hasn't recovered and needs to reboot. The most stressing issue to TT is China's dominance. But I think it's a tremendous mistake by the ITTF to only have two (2) slots per country for the World Cup and the Olympics. That's *NOT* the way to fix the problem. China deserves their dominance at the moment - let them have it! Actually, since Ma Long is Sharara's favorite (ITTF president), I hope Ma Long won't play in London. Just for that.
Respect to Timo for playing great match! Zhang Jike is a real beast, I don't remember anyone playing ever that fast. Nevertheless, also Timo is getting better, hopefully he will be in the top shape during Olympics.
yeah. working 8 hours instead of twelve and having health and education like in the scandinavian countries is old and boring. if you really have travelled in china you must have noticed what is the quality of life most people live in. polluted enviroment, long hours of hard work in cruel conditions and generally being treated like animals.who only have to work... or train like in zhang zike's case. no personality at all.
@papagalosable Shut the fuck up and stop looking for excuses for your incompetence
European players suck because they don't work hard enough, and to be on the top of any sport you have to work your ass off, there is no fucking labor union for atheletes!
such kind of celebrations are not for a sport like table tennis. though i admit he is a super player he is the leader of a more improved chinese generation he is also the leader of stupidity concerning his attitude. its a shame cuz i always thought that chinese are always self-disciplined. sports is not always about who wins or loose but its also about transmiting certain values for people to become better in their lives.
zhang is a mini copy of kong linghui but in steriods..i said it 6 months ago that he was gonna be the new world champion...i hope he becomes the new olympic champion as well..his style doesnt to stop amazing me..what a player..
Zhang Zike is no doubt one of the best players after JO Waldner, even compare with his Chinese fellows. From his timing, speed, accuracy and tactics, Zhang will be on the top of the world for pretty long time.
No matter how much I like Boll, his power was weak and how could he expect to overcome JK by staying closed to the table playing speedy first 3 ball attack like the Chinese 20 some years ago. No matter how much I want the Chinese defeated, JK was more like a powerful TT machine.

There two things that not many people probably don't notice. Firstly, Liu Guoliang was really nervous as his job could be on the line if Zhang lost. Is it possible for a player to swap table tennis grips during a game as In playing shakehand and then switching to penhold in a game please reply if you know
Zhang Jike won the chinese trials ... He deserves to win this tournament !!! Timo boll was the number 1 ... Now Boll is number 2 ... Zhang Jike number 3 ... And Wang Hao number 1
Have you noticed that nearly always when Timo was using his reverse pendulum serve, Zhang flipped it and the made the point? Wonder why Timo didn't change his serve to the normal pendulum serve like he did when winning the first set.
Timo gets no punch or penetration on his backhand block. It's nice it's becoming more stable, but he doesn't put much pressure on Zhang with it. No bueno.
@brenktt Actually neither WLQ nor Xu Xin nor Ma Long: they're stone cold watching him celebrate... Says a lot about the kind of cut-throat competition and atmosphere they have within that national team between the top players.

Thanks to TTCountenance for posting so many great videos... mucho appreciation. Timo Boll is really the best "sportmanship" player in losing and winning, such a "rare" great character of sport today.... hat off to Timo

I think Boll should stop stepping around his backhand so much. He loses so many points like that even if he does a sharp fade loop.

No bueno.

Timo is great, but Zhang Jike were unbelievable in this game...

@brenktt Actually neither WLQ nor Xu Xin nor Ma Long: they're stone cold watching him celebrate... Says a lot about the kind of cut-throat competition and atmosphere they have within that national team between the top players.
