I would love to hit these notes on my trumpet!!! Although I've only been playing for 3 1/2 years and highest I can hit is the high E. But that's pretty good considering I'm a freshman in highschool!!! And only playing on a beginner trumpet. Next week I'm getting a Benjamin trumpet. Is that a good one or no?
@dylandavis24 I would recommend that you play on a few trumpets before you chose to get a new one. Buy the trumpet that you feel most comfortable on. Right now, I am playing on a Yamaha Xeno 1935RGS. Make sure that you do lip slurs and long tones when you are comparing trumpets to buy.
I have a question... what would happen if you gave one of the screamers (maynerd, wayne bergeron, etc) a piccolo trumpet? and i mean after they get used to one if they havent played one already, would everything be an octave up or so? cause they sound like theyre already hitting the notes in the impossiblely high range.
The range this guy had is absolutely beyond words. Like, I've been playing trumpet for 9 years, I'm a pretty solid lead player, probably with about a high F to high G range, hit a double C maybe 3 or 4 times in my life, but the fact that Maynard could do that and more every time he picked up the horn is unbelievable. He's one of the best ever, will always be one of my idols as a lead player. RIP, Boss.
@trumpetguy3039 I'm in the same position as you, though only having played for 4 years. I can't quite reach it yet but I plan to get it around summer time. Especially with the progress I've been making. At the end of last summer, the highest note I could reach was probably a high E. Over that time, I've worked my way up to Double G, which I've only reached about 2 or 3 times. I've got to say that this is possibly the best comment I've seen on YouTube ever.
@TehDevl That's actually really good- just make sure you don't rush it too much =) and avoid using too much lip/mouthpiece pressure (I used to have this issue).
@TehDevl yeah. My suggestion is work on getting the best tone and intonation for all the high notes as you can, try practicing them with a turner. If you can hit *insert high note here* at home, it's mostly useless unless you can hit it well in a performance. Definitely keep the instrument up, and keep listening to great trumpet players.
@liggleguy257 I can actually play one of his songs almost as written, Admirals Horn. If you want the music I have all of the parts including a crazy high solo
No human can come remotely close to his supreme register I mean his solos where crazy the highest I can hit is an E above the staff or ocassionaly an F above the staff.
Wish I had the music. By the way if anybody wants the parts for Maynard Ferguson's Admirals Horn and a recording of it just let me know and I can get it to you.
@Branon5 If you can hit an E above the staff, you're pretty good. I've played trumpet for 5 years, this is my 6th, and I can barely hit a C above the staff.
@tpstrat14 I think the epiciness that was played in this video by Maynard might have messed with your hearing, because you are hearing wrong if you think this sucked
that keyboard solo was so fucking tight. Way to save the piece, dude. Maynard TRIED to ruin it with his mouse-sounding SHIT, but that keyboard solo was AWESOME!!
Honestly, I am a trumpet player and Fergi is a Legend. But here he did something I do not really like. High register blowing, the rhythm does not work, the feeling is poor.
@tpstrat14 I find it interesting that you choose to voice your hatred of Maynard Ferguson on multiple videos. Is it so important to everyone hear about your very singular hatred of his superior control in the upper register? I would advise you spend more time finding what you do like than criticizing what you don't. I'm sure you appreciate all the negative attention you're getting, but the rest of us would like to listen to this music undisturbed by your acrimonious commentary.
my band played this version two years ago and I freaking loved it....but then the seniors graduated and my band director chose to have us play the original. Not nearly as fun.
lets all admit it. Maynard Ferguson was a showboat. but, he had a right. He was in my opinion the best trumpet soloist ever. high notes, vibratro, rips, falls, he could do everything and make it sound great while doing it.
@goonarf you're a moron Ferguson was having fun that's what he did and he was a great player better than you could ever be and certain better than Watson if you don't like this video then don't listen to it or comment.
BTW the best trumpet players of all time were Bix Biederbecke and louis armsrtong go ahead and try to throw out names who you think are better tahn them
ugh... could this arrangement be more annoying? Maynard put so much vibrato on the high notes. I understand it's hard to hit those, but still. James Last's arrangement is much better, more symbolic, and the trumpet soloist Derek Watson or whatever his name is is much better.
@goonarf I'm pretty sure he could hit the notes quite a bit easier than you make it sound, but Maynard loved having fun while playing his music. I guarantee it was on purpose every time.
@MrDrDuck Maybe the fact that I don't even play a fucking brass instrument has something to do with that. So shut your goddamn Mouth. You don't know who I am or anything about my opinions. I play the fucking saxophone and the piano, which is about as far as you can get from trumpet. I was simply stating that someone with as much talent as Maynard should realize that this song probably shouldn't be played with. It's MY OPINION. So kindly, get the fuck off my case.
@mjw9363 Well I am just about to blow your mind. Sax is a woodwind instrument. You play it by blowing across a reed. Likewise, piano is a string instrument, contrary to popular belief that it's a percussion.
Ferguson played for a total of 52 seconds in this song cracking on 20% of his notes, he's obviously not the best player in that band of professional musicians.
@ChangeWontWait Hey dude--just shut up. You dont know crap about Maynard. You couldn't do that at all--let alone in the last years of your life. Have you ever even played trumpet, you conceited brat?! didn't think so. So just shut up, and dont comment on Maynard's playing--Long live maynard!!!!!!!!!!!
Playing a synth in this kind of music is like using a flute in heavy metal music; doesn't work so well. Should've stuck with a guitar solo on this one.
Sounded like they were just rushing through it...Las vegas revue style. The song is there, but the feeling is not. That keyboard solo and flute solo just trainwrecked it for me.
Hey, if you wanna call yourself a musician, you have to be able to hit all capable notes on your instrument clearly and in tune. Don't even think about making stupid excuses.
it doesn't mean that he could either. and it carries no importance on the music he actually created, all within a pretty average note range. would his music have been improved by playing some notes like dizzy gillespie?
I don't think his range reflects his work. You have to master certain skills to make clear decision on what kind of music you want to persue. I bet he mastered everything before making his decision.
I don't think you need to master an instrument to be able to create music of worth. I appreciate your overall argument but don't agree. Talent only becomes an issue if the artist cannot conquer the skill required to perform their vision. If they can it doesn't matter if the artist can only play ten notes. Whether miles could play high or not is irrelevant - as someone once noted, he doesn't think up there. If the artist, due to their ability, has to change their dream, THEN it is a problem
Ok, I was talking from performer's perspective, so I can't disagree with you. This topic is really deep when you really think about it. I don't think there's no wrong answer to this so I'll take your argument into account and think about it more.
it certainly is deep, and interesting to think about. i do agree with you that the more control you have over your instrument the less you have to think about what you're doing and you can think more about why you're doing it. which can only be a good thing. good luck with it laerk :)
He can play 4 octaves about the normal range for a trumpet player. Which is incredible considering it takes like a month to add another note to your range
I guess you don't play trumpet cause that is just simply not true. There is no set amount of time it takes to build range, that is that average range of someone that plays high but that is because after that it so hard to keep a full tone above it. And also his range expanded well above triple G, he just didn't play that high that often cause he knows it won't always sound good.
Video director's an idiot. Doesn't know which instrument is soloing at any given moment. Keyboard's doing his thing, but the camera's checking out the drummer or something. Same thing in the other videos of this event. Too bad... Another superb M.F. Band performance, as usual.
Yeah don't just pick up your horn and try to get up to the stratosphere....guys have ruined their careers trying to do that without training. Maynard could play that high because he developed a special breathing technique based on yoga.
he actually played his trumpet the wrong way. look at his throat. he wasn't taught how to play it right. I still respect him to be the best trumpet player ever. look at the previous videos and look at the progress of his throat expanding. Don't try to play like him. you'll lose brain cells trying to play like him. he's a pro
Lol dude there is no right or wrong way to play trumpet in most cases, what ever works, everybody's mouth and teeth and lip muscles are different. and it isn't bad if his throat expands, I have seen a lot of people do that when they wail like that
He is great and so are the rest ( esp. wayne bergeron, i have his horn) but i don't like how he had the synth playing all the time, it doesn't have as much power and meaning with all that electric crap. and is that ron pedley
I second Drag0ncl0ud's response it takes less air moving faster, I took a lesson with Roger Ingram at that was exactly how he said to play them, as well as Jim Manley, and Eric Miyashiro...
Ha ha, don't like this version. This song should not be played this way.

Haha, omg you damn high school kids, there are a bunch of people that can play above double B, Maynard could play above that as well.

I play a Holton Lt 302 Mf Horn and it is the best Trumpet you can play as a Leader....
But Fergusons Trumpets are Monsters, you must have a really good airstream to play a trumpet like this....

its a large bore with A LOT of resistance in the tubing. Any trumpet maybe used for lead.
I use a Schilke X3 which is a large bore with barely any resistance.

Video director's an idiot. Doesn't know which instrument is soloing at any given moment. Keyboard's doing his thing, but the camera's checking out the drummer or something. Same thing in the other videos of this event. Too bad... Another superb M.F. Band performance, as usual.

Even his backup trumpets sound like they can hit the high register... That must have been a good payday to play with this guy.

I just tryed to play like this guy... my head almost exploded for real!!!
jeffbrister2004 2 years ago
Yeah don't just pick up your horn and try to get up to the stratosphere....guys have ruined their careers trying to do that without training. Maynard could play that high because he developed a special breathing technique based on yoga.

also jeffbrister2004,
he actually played his trumpet the wrong way. look at his throat. he wasn't taught how to play it right. I still respect him to be the best trumpet player ever. look at the previous videos and look at the progress of his throat expanding. Don't try to play like him. you'll lose brain cells trying to play like him. he's a pro
if im wrong sry. i've just been observing

Or maybe everyone else plays the trumpet wrong.
Hobocommander4 2 years ago
