  • mattbea61 I lost touch with you since you moved to France and your phone no. It's me,P.T. Email me at my name(one word,no space in between 1st and last name) at hotmail.com. Weird seeing all my vidz all over the net and reading comments when I never posted them. You picked a great one here though. I was watching it and thought,"Hmmm. He films like I do then I saw your comment and said "It IS me!" Contact me soon old friend.

  • oh I love Todd....represents the human..thanks for posting!!!!

  • If this dosen’t break your heart, maybe you don’t have one. Brilliant!!

  • Todd pisses me off, he's too damn good.

  • about 3:20 ish you hear the person recording this crying. this is exactly what a normal reaction to this song is!

  • Todd is broke.. Is this acceptable?

  • @manysons Got wrong info pal. Who are you to ask "acceptable"??? Ohhh man...

  • Could this be the saddest song ever written? It's hard to type through the tears.

He's the only artist that does this to me on a regular basis.....L

  • @hispire1 yes

  • Ya gotta wonder about the 2 people that hit the dislike button. Do they feel nothing when they hear this song? I pity them.

  • Oh my freaking god. This is outrageously great...one of my favorite Todd songs. No Autotune here, folks (or on any of his albums). Lot to learn from Rundgren, one of the greatest talents of the music world. He's a huge influence on my writing.

  • @bry3921 ~ With Todd well established on the radio at that time, he influenced Daryl long before he worked with and produced H&O in the early 70's. Just listen to the record "Provider", from the early Daryl and John years, 1968 to 1971. Todd's "take chances, on the edge of it" style of singing is very much his own. Daryl's voice, (unlike John's, which is more R&B), is quite similar to Todd's, but with more adherence to the melody. Brothers from different mothers. That "look" is love and respect.

  • LOL...if they try to put him in the Hall of Fame, let's all protest! Better yet, maybe we should start a Hall just for him....

  • todd did it from the fiarytail...... he lived it..he made it happen..he went waY OUT (IN A GOOD and a TODDLY WAY..lOVE Todd....

  • sapienza43; you said it all...I love the comment about "we have his music all to ourselves." I struggle with the fact that he has not gotten the acclaim, as you mention. But, I love going to see him at an intimate venue in NYC.

  • Comment removed

  • If this doesn't bring tears to your eyes, nothing will. Todd is unique. Todd is an iconclast. His body of work is a treasure trove of hidden gems. I'm amazed that he has never received the acclaim he deserves. In a way it's nice, we have his music all to ourselves. I've seen him 6 times and I'm excited to be seeing him in Oneonta, NY in July. He is in the same "genius" class as Lennon/McCartney, Pete Townshend, Joni Mitchell, Andy Partridge, Bob Dylan and Elvis Costello. Prolific and brilliant.

  • @sapienza43 You said it all well.

  • what do i do todd, i dont know anymore.

  • Incredible song, string arrangement and the incredible Todd - wonderful!

  • he's ALWAYS been this way.......all those key changes, sharps and flats, and that's why it's hard to sing AND PLAY his songs. Only the finest musicians play with him as that is why he is still here 45 years AFTER we first heard "We've Gotta Get You a Woman" in 1967!

  • You know, someone like Celine Dion got material that approached The Classical Aria in form an interpretation. Todd shows what a Tenor Guy can do with material that approaches The Classical Aria. I mean the guy has Technique.

  • amazing he can still hit that upper register with such power!

  • wow. stunned by how moving this was... the emotion in his voice. amazing.

  • This got me so deep. One of the most moving things I've ever seen. What a guy.

  • This is Todd's way of killing me.

  • I agree with all those who believe Todd should be in the hall of fame, but when you really stop and think about it, for those of us who believe he has had a very huge effect on music over the decades with his constantly evolving music, and using his genius to 'produce,' so many other groups, such genius has little time to be concerened with their place in music history.

Frankly, I don't believe he gives a damn.

Also, would you want to be in associated with "The Dave Clark Five?"

    Peace.

    Rock

  • One of the best songs in my life.

    The score is brilliant.

  • waaaaay back in the day (let's say around 1980 or so) I was living in Omaha and a small group of us decided to make the pilgramage...in January...to see Todd in Kansas City, about 4 hours down the street. When we got there, they had had their power shut off for not paying the bill. The promoter brought in generators to power the show and some temp lighting in the building but there was no heat. It was about 35-40 degrees in there...and still an amazing show went on. It was phenomenal.

  • yeeeeah...'Todd is god' Todd is like Kansas on some levels...artists that make amazing music that only a percientage of the general public really 'gets'....moreso for Todd, but I think you know what I mean. They both, however, deserve to be in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and aren't and arent' likely to be for the reasons stated above. It's not right I tell you...

  • @cmunik8r I was at The Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame a few months ago and they had a Todd Rundgren display. I thought that was weird since they have deemed Todd not good enough for their bloated building.

  • @cmunik8r please, let's not compare Todd to Kansas...

  • @sportsmediaamerica fair enough...although i wasn't in ANY way trying to compare them musically...hope you got that much.

  • That tour was awesome I wish he would do that again. Starting out as a teenager and for the most part I think Todd was self learned music himself with his body of work and mind I would put todd with the greats I thank God that Todd is still doing music Milan276 akron ohio

  • TODD IS GOD!!!!

  • Wow......this brings tears to my eyes. What an incredibly beautiful, emotional vocal. The lyrics are amazing. Todd's the best.

  • if he never gets in the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame I really couldn't care less. The music is worth so much more.

  • im 21 and this is amazing!!....it really doesnt matter how old you are listening to a genious is a must no matter what age.

  • aw god, i'm just 16 years old and he is totally MY number one, the one and only. beautiful todd, you are a genius, total genius. i am not the same after listening to your music, not at all.

thank you for your music, <3

  • This is one of my all time favorite Todd songs! Great Rendition!!

  • Wish I was in Akron 2nite to see his new tour.

  • Thanks : )

  • Man this guy is so great!

  • Same haunting way of 'Bring in the clowns'.

  • I wonder how many people have cried listening to his work....add me to that list just now.

  • Today I am your chariot horse Tomorrow I'm your albatross Suspended by the finest thread No one could ever see And when there's breathing in your ear You put your faith in all you hear But just how deep those feelings go I have no way to know I'll never know If I was blind Would you still be my eyes Or hide everything you see Pretending to care about me When all the time You're just wishing I'd fade away
  • life is so short...even though full of so many people, so many places,so many things we do, things we want to do...we fill our life with many things...making our destiny,in my life i have had questions that i have looked for-searched for-cried many a tear for- i have wanted the answer for...i wanted to fill the empty space left open, the despair the emptiness left behind by people i have loved, the heartache never healed always there...this song says it for me...i know i am not alone, only human

  • Artistic integrity doesn't require AUTOTUNE!

  • If Todd had written just this one song it would qualify him as one of the greatest songwriters of all time. But he has a 40 year catalog of songs like this. Makes no difference if he ever receives a nod from the Rock 'n Roll Hall of Fame or the mediocre "world at large." He's touched the lives of millions of fans and his great art and integrity are intact. Music this good will never fade away.

  • todd should have gone in the studio and done a remake of this song with this quartet. a good solid polished studio version would have been amazing especially added to a new cd. todd tends to dismiss the very things fans would really love to have happen. but thats todd, amazing, unpredictable and definetly and individualist. i guess this version will have to do along with his 1985 a capella origional which is beyond amazing

  • @rundgren17 Totally agree

  • An amazing artist, an outstanding song. Thank you Todd Rundgren for staying true to yourself and not selling out:)))

  • Todd you have been an inspiration in my life for about 30 years my man! This is just outstanding. Thank you for the music.

  • I'm sure someone here has already posted this fact, but this song appears on the album "Acapela". The strings here are all TR's voice on the album version. Of course, very, very good.

  • Never heared this one before, but.......

    WOW

  • Is this the Brodsky Quartet?

  • T.R. has always been one of the rare true talents.

  • This is so powerful!!! Todd's voice is superb in this video! Maybe the best he's ever sounded! He was dead on!!!!! LOVE HIM!

  • What a nice odd off key song to put the nail in the thought that someone pretending to care about you is bent and a twisted emotion..an oddly beautiful song from a guty whose willing to show people how to feel ,when they have no way to express it themselves ...Todd the musical life coach. very nice video . thanks for posting it here 4 us .

  • such a beatifully lyric-ed song, so very sad and wow my heart aches...part of life's experience...thanx todd for living and feeling like the rest of us...but most of all THANX FOR SHARING...

  • I LUV YOU TODD! so perfect and beautiful.

    as you always are.

  • Its such a treat to hear live strings instead of fake keyboard sounds!

  • So Glad to hear that a person of 19 can "get it" with Todd. His music is all about love...and much of it is quite sophisticated -such as this piece. We old guard love you Todd.. always will. Thanks for not loosing your muse through the bumps.

  • Damn! I missed this one - thanks for posting

  • no one beleives me,but i swear to god i went to the same high school as todd, upper darby high, albeit 30 years later, but i aint kidding, upper darby pa,right behind bonner and prendie,in upper darby, phila pa

  • Todd IS Godd, this just goes to show, among so many other fantastic songs!! Fuck Rock 'n Roll Hall Of Fame if they can't see the genius that has been so productive in over 5 decades. That's only because he never went corporate and commercial but just did what he wanted to do and never cared what you and i or anyone thought about that! That's why he is more PUNK in my opinion then any tattoed and pierced punkband of the '90's or '00's will ever be, no matter how hard they try!!

  • @okkifunkistokki Todd will be inducted in his lifetime. He'll probably be in Akron the night before the induction ceremony, possibly for his 75th birthday bash(and he'll still be hitting all the notes).

  • This is easily one of the most beautifully heartbreaking songs of all time. In fact, there is only one song that I can think of that compares: "When You Go" by Jonathan Coulton, and Coulton himself admits that he kinda had this song in mind when he was writing his. Anyway, just beautiful... I need a tissue, I think I got some 'dust' in my eye...

  • Lets not forget what a fantastic producer Todd is of other artist's as well. Thanks 4 sharing.

  • He looks great. I get the feeling he'd be happier singing to noone else, but we

all want him to perform for us and he has succumbed to his destiny as a great talent that needs to be shared. I don't see any ego in him.

  • Thank you so much....

  • Its hard to describe something as beautiful and thoughful as this song. I can only say that this song is a gift from a very talented person and musician. Thank you Todd

  • oh my gosh. what a beautiful voice... velvet voicebox.

  • Great video.. I was at this show..

  • wow his voice is great, moved to tears again. so plaintive, so needful yet resigned. yeah go Todd.

  • I've always adored this song. It's heartbreaking. Full of longing. The music, the lyrics and his achingly plaintive voice. Why don't you care about me? Oh, God. Brilliant.

  • The man is a genius.

  • @ age 53 I find this effort refreshing..much better than some of the disco days crap..Good to see even pretty boys age with time..I have been a fan for 30 years Todd..you still get the job done...Kudos

  • Todd is 61, he was 59 when he did this and I agreee he still gets the job done

  • unbelievable that in this stripped version Todd still sounds credible and even great.

  • Todd, Wow. Brought tears, sorry I'm a sap but I've love you since 68.

  • Watching and listening to Todd R. has brought my understanding and appreciation for music to a whole new level. He is in a certain genius category all by himself. Very unique.

  • I LOVE TODD!!

  • He give me chills. I have adored Todd since S/A. I cant wait ti see him live again.

  • 雑把先生、日本では動画が見ずらいよ~。

    その点Todd先生は寛容だ。

    この曲もむちゃくちゃや良い。

  • Got to be one of the best ballads I've heard in a long time.

  • God cares :)))

  • Love the A Capella album, and this song in particular - but the string quartet gives it a classic, ballad, chamber-music sound. Lovely indeed.

  • Another Todd concert I'm sorry I missed.

  • This is absolutely amazing and wonderful and beautiful. Thank you sharing it. I am a huge fan of the Acapella album and this song specifically. Peace Always,

    Jason

  • Its been nearly 40 years since I first heard TR, saw him live the first time 30 years ago. Maybe my hearings not what it was, but man alive he sounds just as great in this track as he did all those years ago. What a pro!

  • Underrated brilliance!

  • Todd, how did you get into my head? I try to hide my heart break and you sing it out for the world to hear.

  • This version is king.

It would be wise IMHO to reproduce it in the studio in this manner.

  • He really lays it on the line here.Pure and simple.Kudos to the String Quartet!! I caught this tour when he came to Austin,TX.Brilliant!! Salute!!

  • I cannot watch this too many times. I saw him do it during his A Capella concert in 1985 or 86. Absolutely freaking amazing.

  • Probably the most incredible song ever written.

  • Rare and fine artist, indeed!

    You are right, Phil!

Thank you for sharing this pearl with me, my friend!

    (Magam he, he, he!)

    Mine ;-)

  • C'mon, someone else? Everything I see on-line indicates Todd wrote it. The other version came out seven years after this album. Anyway, one of my favorites.

  • Todd did indeed write it.

  • I was at this show.

Seeing it again was almost too much.

  • This is real soul music!! Todd exposes his very soul in front of the world. Pure genius!!

  • todd is the box of 64 in a world of 8-packs.

  • Todd sings this with such beautiful raw emotion unlike any other one he's done.Listen to the words. It sounds like he's singing a letter to his deceased dad, who couldn't express himself emotionally to his kids. Of course, I could be totally wrong, but I can definitely relate to this song because it's everything i ever wanted to say to my own "never there" father. this is one of the most "cut to the bone" beautiful songs i have ever heard. Thank you, Todd, for being you all these years.

  • This sounds so much better than the original version.

  • Touches my heart and soul.

    Thank you for posting this!

  • This song breaks my heart. The power of music and lyrics is amazing. Todd conveys the pain so well. Thanks for posting this.

  • i love this man so.

  • Me too.

  • this one really makes you cry if you just split up with your girl before listening to it

  • It truly was a pleasure to have met and talked to this man. An experiance I'll remember to my dying day.

  • Same! What a pleasure he is -- I want to see him perform live as much as possible before he calls it quits.

  • This is a tough song to sing, but Todd makes it seem easy! The man is amazing!

  • I am 19 and I have to say that Todd is one of my favorite artists of all time. Spent my entire life listening to him and seen him several times in concert. One of his best songs and he can still belt it. Keep it up Todd!

  • @giometro33 Im an Embryo and I think todd is one bonerfied legend!!

  • @BlueOrpheus1988 Really, I've always wanted to ask you your opinion on abortion legislation.

  • This is a fantastic video! It's great to hear this song orchestrated. I love the version on "A Cappella" too!

  • Actually that's the first time I heard the song. I also didn't know someone else wrote the lyrics. Regardless, I love the internet because I have been searching to find out who sung it in A Cappella and here it is! I love it with strings too. Thanks for posting!

  • Who wrote the lyrics and music?

  • Someone else? Todd wrote it all, music and lyrics. Who else would come up with this brilliance ?

  • OMG! This man keeps getting better with time. Is he amazing and sexy --- or what!!! The Rock and Roll HOF needs a place for him. Keep singing Todd!

  • Nearly 60 years old,and he's still got it. I tell ya,if he never gets inducted into the Rock N' Roll Hall of Fame, then that'll be in my opinion a spit in the face of music itself. Todd is unarguably the most under rated musical genius of all time.

  • Exactly-he is genius. That is apparent in just a select few number of his songs.

  • @NerdyHippy -Any and every hall of fame means nothing to art itself.

  • abi titmuss on cello

  • I am speechless...Todd!

  • Especially good Todd.....so moving and beautiful......Thanks for posting this

  • thank you tri1301 for caring. it means a lot and Todd is so insipriational as you say.

  • i heard this on my ipod today and almost cried-this is his most heartbreaking song

    the words are so poetic

  • I listen to his haunting beautiful voice and find strength to fight this terminal illness that I have. Thank you TR for the many beautiful songs that make me want to come here everynight and listen. I find inner peace and I thank you..

  • God bless you Jessebel1.

  • Garlic, carrot juice, blueberries, wheat grass..Garlic can kill cancer and aduki beans. The macro biotic diet is a great one. Reiki, optimism, positive music, sound healing..I send peace to you

Also reiki and positive thoughts. thank you both for caring.

thanks TR for the peace and you two as well.

  • You are very very welcome. Wish you the best even though I don't know you. You are in the family though. You are doing good things. You are smart.

  • Todd is Godd. Don't go away. Be well.

  • Incredible!

  • Is this man ever less than at the top of his game? Devastating and beautiful.

  • LOVE IT

  • Todd...May you live a long, long time. You are an inspiration...

  • Todd paints this canvas of a song superbly, and excellent backing from Ethel. Hard to better this one.

  • Beautiful song. Todd Rules!

  • Good version of the song. Todd Rules.

  • freeking amazing! Todd is a gift to us all.

  • There are no words....except to say...perfect.

  • Todd's voice takes me to a whole other place ..... Todd is Godd Love you !

  • Enjoyed Todd at The Forum on Sunday - absolutely fantastic! Lucky enough to be on front row of this gig at the Apollo and yes I had tears streaming down. Voice of an angel. So so moving. Come back to London soon Todd x

  • I love this song, it is one of his saddest. Usually there's some sort of positive message in his songs somewhere. This is one where I think he was letting someone go and it hurt like hell.

  • I'm 25 years old. This song is why i got into a cappella in the first place. It's epic.

  • I'm not sure when this was filmed and don't know the song, but Todd Hasn't lost his voice, that I can hear. I'm seeing him at the Forum later this month and can't wait. Last saw in in 1976 and the whole Utopia thing kind of went right over my head.

  • Superb.

  • I had previously heard Jennifer Warnes version and fallen in love with the song.

Thank you for sharing this version.Incredible power and emotion conveyed by Todd Rundgren.

  • Todd still can make me cry..Thank God for you Todd, I'm in a world that just doesn't want to cry.

  • This guy is a musical genius period! If you dont like this song too bad.. Go listen to Kid Rock!

  • Yep, it's just you.

  • overwhelmed. just blown away.

  • Fantastic performance!

  • He da man.

This performance shows when he's good. And he is darn good. Incredible, really.

I'd encourage people to listen to the original track from A Cappela, that's the one that will nail you.

Done all by that Runt himself.

Remarkable song, unmatched and a work of some genius, really.

It's sort of in its own class.

  • Anyone wanna doubt this man's genius after that clip? Pah. I hope he does get the credit he deserves before he's gone.

  • beautiful. And I don't come from rock--I found him because he does Gilbert & Sullivan's Nightmare Song really, really well!

And anything is better with a string quartet (violist's daughter).

  • I'm totally amazed by that song, arrangement, and performance by Todd.

  • This is so incredibly beautiful! I love this performance. Thank you so much for posting this perfection.

  • This was on eof the best tours ever - Todd, Joe Jackson and Ethel. You aint seen rock and roll till you've seen a string quartet bring it!!!! Unfucking believable. There needs to be a commercial CD release of that tour.

  • a wizard a true star!!

  • A belated Happy Birthday Todd. So, yeah, we're all a little more filled-out and silver-haired, but your voice, lyrics and talent only get better as time passes. You are my true musical messiah. Thanks for all the years of metamorphosis.

  • We all love you Todd... Your message of love, compassion and peace is ...THE message. You are our musical-poetic voice. We long-term fans...our DNA is woven with your tonal fibers.

The true voices are rarely recognized - take it as a complement. Bob -Ultrasonic Studios

  • Happy Birthday Todd!

  • I love this song too - it's kind of hard to see Todd as an older guy, a little heavier like the rest of us, to me he will always been the skinny guy in a skirt on stage...now let's see if he hits that high note...oooooooh he did it. God bless him.
