  • Well the Maori who bashed the Americas Cup put ends to the One Tree Hill now its no Tree Hill

  • the footage was filmed in what appears to be a cell i don't care how the footage sounds I'm gratefull to here and take u2 anyway they come great footage thanks for sharing this is a rare song to catch in the line up I feel blessed/

  • Great version, a tune they very rarely play live. This rocks, an unplucked gem, although Bono sure isn't hitting those high "RAINING" notes at the end anymore haha

  • Cool, I think that's the audio from my boot.

  • Why in the fuck would a band of U2's statue have an opening act, featuring non talent waste of time Kanye West? It boggles the mind. I guess U2 needed to throw a bone to a dog.!

  • @lp32862 - U2 are about breaking down barriers. Race, religion and politics. By bringing in different music acts from different musical genres - they in their own little way help to acheive this. Perhaps you are the dog they had in mind.

  • Hey Mate good vid i was there almost where you were standing and it was great.

I went to POPMART in Johannesburg in !998 then Vertigo in Auckland 2006 next one is Capetown in Feb 20011 U2 360. how great to see U2 three times WOW

  • love this song!! love this band

  • i watch this show at onetreehillepisode . org

  • I was at this concert... It was magic...

  • This song is great one of my favorite songs off of Jashua Tree.

  • bellissim a 'sta canzone...spero la facciano pure a roma ad ottobre

  • he write this song for a rowdy who die by a motor crasch ......

  • goshhh i love this song, i wish they would play it live more often, it's such an underrated song!

  • I dont think its underrated , its just too unknown to many.

  • the joshua tree , best album ever!!! u2 forever!!!1

  • The thing that gets me about this one is that Greg Carroll was from Wanganui - yet the song is about a landmark in Auckland.... still a memorable song, and as much a part of Kiwi culture as West Auckland and Tui beer.

  • Greg Carrol took Bono to One tree hill, and it obviously impressed him.

  • I love this song so much. I think my only chance of hearing it live is going to see them down under!

  • best u2 soug ever

  • My favourite U2 song. Love it.

  • I agree. It's their best song.

  • amazing solo end...

  • I love Edge's solo! He is a seriously good guitar player!

  • A much better performance of this song is the Rattle & Hum take that didn't make the final cut...also available on Youtube.

  • very much agreed.

  • amazing performance

  • after we buried Greg in Wanganui i went back to Ireland with Bono,Larry,Adam,Joe Steve etc and attended a large service there for Gregs friends who were unable to attend his burial here( on behalf of our whanau in NZ).What a heart moving experience for his friends who loved him.

  • such a beautiful song, prayers sent out to your friend.

it's brilliant that n.z. is the only place they play this song live.....................

    such a tribute

  • hello, they have also played it in miami in 1987....FYI

  • F.Y.I.....yes,i know they played it in miami.they played it all over the place in 87/88,it was on the album they were touring at the time, after all.

what i meant was, they don't play it anywhere now, apart from n.zealand and they play it everytime they tour n.zealand.

which is a shame considering it is such a classic.

i think they might have played it in asia somewhere,on the popmart tour because greg carrolls family were in the crowd, but that's about it.

  • I read they have only played it about 10 times.

  • @heythatisjourney since it was released, this song has been played 44 times.

first time in -1987-09-10 - Uniondale, New York - Nassau Coliseum-

last time - 2006-11-30 - Saitama, Japan - Saitama Super Arena-

the band have said that they are going to play the song again this year when they perform their new zealand shows

  • Kia Ora. Great band. Great Song. Thank U :)

  • I was there 4 this!

u could literally see One Tree Hill in the background!

    Awesome!!

  • My God, a proper dad rock solo out of the Edge!

  • What a touching song. Great attribute to Victor Jara and Greg Carroll.

  • je souris et je ris aussi!

  • Personally, I think it's a great tribute to our country and to Greg Carroll as an individual, and of the significance of what these both meant to Bono and the 'U2 family' - this track never ceases to make me very proud not only of NZ but of U2 to have invested that emotional energy in writing this. Kia Kaha!

  • This video does not go with this audio. They do not correspond to each other.

  • Look for the updated version in my videostream.

  • u run like a river to the sea!! it literally does. the lava flow from one tree hill flows all the way down to the Manukau Harbour.

  • Thats a fantastic bit of guitar from the edge.

  • Great to see a full version of one tree hill after all those years. Bono's voice comes very close to the sound he had in the 80's. This is exellent!

  • This is the best all time song ever!! Esp since i lived and grew up in Auckland. Brings back many memories.

"i will see you again, when the stars fall from the sky and the moon turns red over one tree hill" xxx

  • sure it works

  • by far the best excellent song true, true classic fitting it's performed in New zealand of course to Greg Carrol.....great seeing it was performed on the Vertigo tour only wonder why u2 never ever performed Red hill mining town....great song & lyrics too that promo video of red hill from 1987 needs to be released sometime if u2's media section ever will??

  • We played this at my sister's funeral. Her son has autism and she lobbied for better treatment/education for those with autism. She was too busy taking care of other folks to realize she had cancer until it was too late. This song gives hope for the innocent and those who strive for justice! BTW, when I lived in Auckland down the road from One Tree Hill, vandals had tried to destroy the tree and it was being propped up with cables. Did the tree ever recovered?

  • No. The tree died. They tried to plant another in its place but vandals tore that one out as well. Now the hill stands as a lonely testament to how respect is dying in Aotearoa.

  • Sorry to hear that, cabbitshivers. It only takes a few bad apples to ruin it for the rest of us, and it happens here in the U.S. and everywhere else too. I thought the people in Auckland and the rest of New Zealand were lovely when I lived there so I won't let that incident spoil my memory of my time there or this song, either.

  • I grew up in Auckland and occasionally went on walks through the park at One Tree Hill with my family (my dad worked in the area); it was favourite place to go. I always thought U2's song was just a coincidence with the One Tree Hill I remembered, but I didn't realize it was about THE One Tree Hill in Auckland until I read "U2 By U2". Brings back a lot of memories. Very sad to here that vandals destroyed it. My Dad's very proud of being a Kiwi.

  • Well he should be, it's a great country. And though respect may be dying among the vandals, the vast majority of Kiwi's are great people. In fact you'd better watch out if the U.S. elections don't result in something better next year you may get some more refugees to joint the "Bush refugees".....and the ones who come will be the ones who show the most respect.

  • This has to b an all time favourite for me.......Such a sentimental song for Bono and being from Auckland it truly does represent something!!!!!!!!

  • It's a beautiful song alright ys1679, but I think its pretty certain that Bono is NOT from Auckland even though he talks a lot about 'the old days in Auckland'. I come from Auckland so I should know. He did live in Auckland once though, I saw him in Mangere.

  • I still think of this as the most moving song of U2... kills me, lovely.

  • Very Powerful & Moving....I heard they rarely play One Tree Hill live cause Bono can't keep it together (not a knock, just that he loved Greg so much his death still hurts!) Bono's voice breaks up in emotion near the end, you can hear him sing " see you again, when the stars fall from the sky...". It chokes me up too.

  • yeah interesting enough, just can't figure out why Red hill mining town was never performed back in 87 on the Joshua tour as well....tempo & theme are similar to One Tree hill {a real shocker if u2 ever played Red hill mining town breaking history}

  • the high notes were just too much for Bono.

  • nah, wouter, he handled them just fine, bono is singing very well...

the "see you again, when the stars fall from the sky" part is incredible!

  • jara is a religious name, greg carrol is the roadie/friend who was killed. also, at live aid 1985, the guy who gives bono the mic after he jumps down off the stage is greg carrol.

  • I think Jara is supposed to be Victor Jara from Chile- a famous folk singer there.

  • It is Victor Jara. He was murdered by Pinochet's military in 1973 for singing revolutionary songs and having strong ties with the previous liberal government of Chile.

  • was there !! hearing it again brings tingles down my spine!!!!

  • i don't believe in painted roses or bleeding hearts

  • i was there,,, top notch

  • for me, one of the top 5 u2 songs.

  • This is by far the best performance of this song. OMG!!! One can't help falling in love with these blessed four.

  • my fave song

  • Great video good quality filmed the whole concert?

  • nop

  • brillant! well posted!

  • Always loved this song. Thanks for posting.

  • The video and sound are WAY off.

  • Check the updated version of the clip in my feed.

  • omg this is actually one of their best songs...joshua tree rocks!!!

  • yeahh

  • Thanks for sharing that, I was there and all I can say that was the best concert I have been to.

  • Excellent hand held. Thanks 4 sharing. :-)

  • Obviously the most under played song of the Joshua Tree album. Red Hill Mining Town ranks up there. To be real though. The first 3 songs are the best. Us true U2 fans would like to see every song popular. Don't deny. Angel of Harlem - gitty up.

  • JayZoop...well said...this whole album is great, and this is one of the most underplayed and underrated. Red Hill Mining Town is excellent; so is this whole album, and this band. Kudos to the camera on this. Excellent work.

  • to me, as far as classic albums go, One Tree Hill and Red Hill Mining Town are the underlying, hidden soul of The Joshua Tree. Just like on another monumental album, the Stones' Exile on Main Street, Torn and Frayed and Loving Cup serve the same role.

You could have said that U2 was/would be on the level of the Stones back in 1987. Now, you can't deny it, as far as historical/cultural/musical impact. for 4 kids from Ireland, there can't be many better compliments.

  • running to standstill far better than redhill minimg town in my opinion

  • I heard they only play it live in NZ, anyone know?

  • Well the song was written about their roadie who died in a motorcycle accident before the release of the joshua tree. He was a new zealander who they met while on tour there, who joined the crew. It's played there to honour him.

  • thank you for explaining the background of the song, but Jara was a friend as well as a roadie to the band.

  • I understand. I was just generalising. But I should have said that, Yes he was a good friend to all of the crew as well as the band.

  • beautiful, thanks for sharing, this made me cry

  • One of their best songs!

  • Great video! Hopefully they play this song in Hawaii!

  • That was extraordinary - haven't heard it in years & moved me to tears. Thanks

  • Best concert I've been to.

    Thanks for posting this!

  • in my opinion ther best song, would give right leg 4 the opertunity to have been ther

  • gr8 video thanks for posting this

  • it was better on the 25th. everyone chanting 'one tree hill' for like 5 mins and they did it last encore. there was gonna be a riot if they didn't play it in NZ even though its five tree hill.

  • i was at this concert on friday and it was the best damn thing i have ever been to in my life i was on trademe all day trying to get tickets for saturday but unfortunately no luck

  • omg i went there and it was an awsome show loved it great clip 2

  • I went to the Saturday night concert, and he dedicated the song to Greg, but when the powerful part came on, EVERY SINGLE PERSON in the crowd was singing, thats about 42,000 voices...boy was it powerful. It was a great way to end the 5 song encore!

  • great ---- U2 rules..

    To Greg, always!

  • incredible. thank the good Lord for YouTube. always been one of my favorites and i know i'm in good company there. was in oakland last year when they played a snippet of OTH, but this was ever better, of course. now if there was some way i could get them to play it in hawaii in a couple weeks...one can only hope. aloha!

  • was at this concert lastnight thank you enjoyed watching it again hopefully wont be another 12 or 13 years wait again

  • Awesome! Thanks for sharing! :)))

  • went to the show, bloody fantastic mate. a no more fitting place to have sung that song, it went off.

  • I went last night, it was amazing!

  • Thats for Greg Carrol

  • Kanye West... i'd boooo him so much if I was there lol

  • kayne is a good guy. I saw him perform five times with u2, and he is a brilliant showman. He had to put up with alot of shit during those concerts. They wouldnt have chosen him as a supporting act if he wasnt a brilliant artist.

  • was awesome ... thank for the video !!

  • Thanks U2006com for posting the video its awsome :)

  • Shit mate, did you go to every concert on their australasian leg? Theres being a fan... and then theres a fan... Good on ya none the less (lucky bugger)
