@weisseadler What on earth has King Henry VIII to do with this choir? Westminster Abbey had a fine choral tradition BEFORE the split in 1532. This Abbey church has always belonged to the Crown ever since it was founded by King Edgar in the tenth century, refounded by King Edward the Confessor in the eleventh century, and rebuilt by King Henry III in the thirteenth century. We didn't need the formal split from Rome to create our own choral tradition - we had it all in the first place.
I fell that there was a very sick man in the crowd. I say that because, at the very end of this great song, the sick man almost put his lungs outside. God bless his soul in that corrupted body.
The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil: yea, it is he that shall keep thy soul
The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in: from this time forth for evermore
He shall defend thee under his wings
Be strong, and he shall comfort thine heart, and put thou thy trust in the Lord -John Rutter Psalms 118: 24; 148: 1-3, 5a; 91:4a, 11; 121: 5-8; 27: 16b

Another marvelous Sacred Anthem from John Rutter. It will no doubt become a wedding favorite for the ages. Rutter has such a gift for melody and harmonics to carry the message of the verse. Oh, that we composers and arrangers could have that depth that Rutter possesses.
John Rutter composes fantastic choral music. It's fun to sing and magnificent to listen to. I was blessed in 1985 to sit in the choir loft at Westminster. I will never forget it. These boys and men and their director do a great service to sacred music in the wonderful 'sound' space of Westminster Abbey.
The beginning really sounds like beauty and the beast:) 1:05 the harmony here is so touching 1:24 i wish i could have a baby boy that would sing this way one day:)
absolutely amazing....I'm moved and haunted by this rendition since friday...also, sounds like the beauty and the beast in some harmonic resolutions...this song will end up played as a jazz standard too 9got to start working on it;)...can't stop listening to this piece....

I have such an appreciation for all the great virtuostic performances through the years but do we really need another interpretation of Tchaikovskys 3rd Piano Concerto for example...but the music world NEEDS musical composers and innovators such as JOHN RUTTER...remember that the great classical composers were the greatest musical innovators of their generation!...Mr Rutters sense of harmony, melodic line and simplicity is unmistakably definitive regardless of which musical genre you prefer...
@rmarlowez Such a petty retort to my statement as Im absolutely sure that even Tchaikovsky himself, had he been alive, would be acknowledging and celebrating current classical musical trends in the music instead of 'looking back' and saying to an aspiring musician/composer "...I can only measure your talent by providing me with another interpretation of my piano concerto that I wrote years ago!...".Your attitude is the reason why things stay stuck in the past under lock and key in a glass cabinet
@s1t9o7r6m Hi again and thanks for your response. ' don't get many of those. This is just to say that all music is based on the music of the past. What music today doesn't use a bass line, a musical construct introduced by Beethoven. (example:Beethoven 9.) I just love this music. I will still listen to Tchaikovsky's 3rd Piano Concerto on Youtube to get your point.
@s1t9o7r6m Petty perhaps, but it doesn't make it any less valid. There's room for the old and the new in music. To prove my point, however, how about the advent of the base line via Beethoven's 5th? That plays such an integral part in one of your video performances. Kate's American Restaurant
LYRICS part 3: From this I know From this I know From this I know forever more He shall defend thee He shall defend thee He shall defend thee under his wings He shall defend thee He shall defend thee He shall defend thee under his wings Be strong And He shall comfort thine heart Shall comfort thine heart And who shall I trust? I trust in the Lord Whose power I trust in, the Lord, In the Lord
LYRICS PART 2: Let them praise the name of the Lord For he shall give his angels charge over thee To keep thee in all thy ways To keep thee in all thy ways To keep thee in all thy ways The Lord himself is my keeper The Lord is my defense upon my right hand So that the sun shall not hurt thee by day Neither the moon by night The Lord shall preserve thee from all evil Yeah, it is even he that shall keep thy soul The Lord shall preserve thy going out and thy coming in
LYIRCS: PART 1 This is the day the Lord has made by John Rutter: This is the day, the day which the Lord has made We will rejoice and be glad in it This is the day, the day which the Lord has made We will rejoice and be glad in it This is the day O praise the Lord of Heaven Praise him in the highest, Praise him all ye angels of his Praise him all ye souls Praise him sun and moon Praise him all ye stars of light
I'm sorry, they could have commissioned someone so much better than Rutter to compose a piece for the wedding. I wouldn't have a problem with this if it wasn't so typical.
This is the most beautiful piece of music I have ever heard in my entire life. I am moved beyond measure. Astonishing. I can only hope that heaven sounds this lovely.
I was astonished when I heard this song yesterday. It will become a classic, not only for having been part of the Royal Wedding, but because of its melody, harmony, and especially for his lyrics. God bless the new couple.
John Rutter has done it again! His simple yet profound and moving adaptation reaffirms his standing as a leading light in making religious choral music accessible and appealing in an increasingly secular world. The strains of "This Is The Day" underscore the holiness, sanctity and beauty of marriage. This absolutely lovely piece of music expresses the utter joy the Royal couple must feel in dedicating themselves to each other in a union ordained by our Supreme Lord and Saviour - Jesus Christ.
I don't get why not the whole of the church bursted into tears while listening to this gorgeous, epic piece of music! It's so beautiful! And the only romantic piece that was played. Even though I had the time of my life yesterday (and not even being English), I kinda missed the passion! I bet if Kate's sister married prince Harry there'd fireworks :) Those two where the only ones with charisma; I enjoyed their appearance the most :) But the dress was great!
before the choir sang, I said to a friend of mine that they had Hubert Parry and some stunning welsh hymns...all they needed was a bit of John Rutter and it was perfect!
Had goose bumps while listening to it ...beautiful rendition...very John Rutter song like his For the Beauty of the Earth and The Lord Bless You and Keep You...both songs are in you tube...i wonder if This Is the Day is available in music stores?....i'd like my choir to sing it ...
have just said exactly the same thing i agree his work is superb and readily indentifiable to thos who appreciate it i told my husband it was his work but didnt bet anything Lol
Yep -- after a few notes I knew it had to be Rutter (even bet my husband THREE nickels, a large bet, since our normal bet is a nickel). Who else writes like that? No one! And exquisitely executed. Thanks for posting this--brought tears to my eyes.
I think I knew by the 4th note that this was a Rutter piece, though the composer was not announced. Then when the adults came in with their harmony, there was no doubt. Typically Rutter. Typically excellent!
@wallyts09 I think I knew by the 4th note that this Rutter piece starts with exactly the same notes as, of all things, Disney´s "Beauty and the Beast"!!!!!
This was my favorite moment of today's ceremony. "This is the Day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad" has sustained members of our family for years. To hear it put to music like this was so special and rememberable. It was like hearing the angels singing in Heaven.
John Rutter is a masterful composer for choir. This piece is OUTSTANDING. And it's a perfect new composition for the new couple. Doesn't hurt that a magnificent choir sang it in an ideal place. GLORIOUS!
John Rutter is a masterful composer for choir. This piece is OUTSTANDING. And it's a perfect new composition for the new couple. Doesn't hurt that a magnificent choir sang it on a ideal place. GLORIOUS!
A magnificent composition, so well suited for the event. This is a classic in the finest Rutter tradition, and I would not be surprised if it did not also become a wedding staple. Absolutely lovely to play over and over.
I first heard and fell in love with this piece when it was featured in a TV movie "Something the Lord hath made"( Psalm 118:24). Could have been a Hallmark movie. At any rate I thought it was just soundtrack music. It's wonderful to know that it's a published work that I can go out and buy a CD along with his other music. It is such a glorious work that it almost moved me to tears.
Not soon enough ! This song will be instantly identifiable 50 yrs from now, with a magical moment in time. What a heavenly rendition of Psalm 118. Rutter just hit a "grand slam".
Helt fantastisk dejlig og smuk musik af John Rutter. Jeg genkendte det straks fra sange vi har sunget i mit sangkor Cantemus i Vejle. Jeg har selv cd'en modtaget fra England til Denmark. The best music of the day of wedding in London!
If only we could alway remember "This is the day The Lord has made, rejoice and be glad in it". My mom said this every morning all the days of her adult life. It has special meaning to me. Beautiful rendition!
wow how wonderful..... keep playing it time and time again!!!! fantastic version!!! well done to the Dean of Westminster Cathedral and the choir.... this is the day!!!
@softylizzie Westminster Abbey. Westminster Cathedral is the Roman Catholic Cathedral up the street. Small technicality, though both the Abbey and Cathedral would be quick to point it out!
It´s a pity: Your video not in wide screen and better image quality (?).

This was my favorite moment of today's ceremony. "This is the Day the Lord has made, let us rejoice and be glad" has sustained members of our family for years. To hear it put to music like this was so special and rememberable. It was like hearing the angels singing in Heaven.

A magnificent, memorable and meaningful masterpiece by English choral composer John Rutter.

John Rutter is a masterful composer for choir. This piece is OUTSTANDING. And it's a perfect new composition for the new couple. Doesn't hurt that a magnificent choir sang it in an ideal place. GLORIOUS!

A magnificent composition, so well suited for the event. This is a classic in the finest Rutter tradition, and I would not be surprised if it did not also become a wedding staple. Absolutely lovely to play over and over.

A specially commissioned John Rutter piece sung by an excellent choir, what more can a person want?

I first heard and fell in love with this piece when it was featured in a TV movie "Something the Lord hath made"( Psalm 118:24). Could have been a Hallmark movie. At any rate I thought it was just soundtrack music. It's wonderful to know that it's a published work that I can go out and buy a CD along with his other music. It is such a glorious work that it almost moved me to tears.

@rmarlowez Actually, this piece was composed specially for this occasion. I don't think it's the song you heard in the movie you mentioned.

This is such a beautiful song. Probably one of the best highlights of the Royal Wedding. I want it sung at my wedding

John Rutter is instantly recognisable. Love this new piece by him and as has been said, it was stunningly performed today.

If only we could alway remember "This is the day The Lord has made, rejoice and be glad in it". My mom said this every morning all the days of her adult life. It has special meaning to me. Beautiful rendition!

@softylizzie Westminster Abbey. Westminster Cathedral is the Roman Catholic Cathedral up the street. Small technicality, though both the Abbey and Cathedral would be quick to point it out!
