@secutorclaudius hook grip is argumently the strongest grip. mixed grip second. it takes time getting used to the hook grip at first. especially on the thumbs. but once you get used to it, it will help alot.
@sneakerfresh9 thanx. i'm trying hook grip, but can't quite get my fingers over my thumb. i'm 5'10", average hgt and hands i guess . don't wanna use straps.
@secutorclaudius how thick is the bar u are using? and r u gripping the thumbs correctly? and yeah, dont use straps, u shouldtnt be lifting anything you cant hold imo.
@sneakerfresh9 regular gym 45 lb bar. and i don't know if i'm gripping it right. i try to wrap my thumb as tight as i can, then wrap my first 2 fingers over it. still, feels weird. thanx for the quick response!
@secutorclaudius the index and middle finger should wrap around the top half of the thumb when u wrap the thumb around the bar. if you are trying wrap ur two fingers around ur whole thumb that is incorrect. and yeah, always grip as hard as you can from the beginning and end of the lift. ive found that by using the hook grip for a couple of months instead of mixed grip, little or no callous formed compared to the mixed grip which is a good thing imo. try to google image "hook grip"
Double overhand, hook, straps, suit, wraps, belt, raw, belt, ... who gives a shit? The dude just pulled over 600#. If you can do better, with either grip or gear, post a video or STFU!
you suck...that wasnt double overhand...im 10 years old and i can double overhand 800lbs....hehe just kidding mate....good stuff.keep it up...do hate the keyboard cowboys

Good lift man. I am failing my deadlifts when they are getting over 550...Speed is great but i cant hold onto the damn bar. I am thinking about switching to hook. How long did it take for you to get used to it as far as painful thumbs?
I've never tried the hook grip. I'll have to look up how to do it exactly. Does the hook grip allow you not to use straps? If I can do 375 with a double overhand, what would you guess I could do with the hook grip? Just curious.....wondering if this is something I can use for myself to get my poundage up and work my back harder. I don't like the alternating grip........I have seen horrible injuries to the bicep with alternating grip.
Watch his competition video, he does the same lockout and wins. That extra little arching of your back at the top is just calling for a verterbal disk injury. Layne is just smart enough to know that and avoids OVER-locking out to save his back.
The lockout is always just so hasty. He should pull the shoulders back and completely extend the legs for couple of seconds. Sorry for being internet expert. :)
I used to DL over 600. I just started DLing again. Due to a hand injury effecting grip strength I'm trying to learn the hook grip. Maybe I'm a wimp but just pulling 300 with a hook is excruciating. It's going to be long hard road back to 600 with a hook grip.

i hate when people label their deadlift as double overhand when its really hook. i can do 420 with DOUBLE overhand, and my goal is 500, but people pretending to use double overhand piss me off.
Guys, It is a DOH grip, but he is using a hook grip. Look it up. It's how olympic lifters can manage such incredible weights. Not to diminish in any way shape or form from Layne's strength and dedication. But a hook grip is completely different than just grabbing the bar double over hand. It provides a measure of mechanical advantage that you just don't have from a pure DOH grip.
Put up a video of yourself doing it, and we'll all be impressed. I'd be impressed if you could deadlift half of what Norton is doing here and haven't used steroids.
look at my vids...My max is still 275x3 but I have mainly been working on getting my form perfect...its pretty bad in my vid right now...Soon I will take a new vid within a week or two...probably 275x5 or 4, with better form than before.
What's the diff between "hook" and "double overhand"?

that was excellence my friend. very inspiring. double overhand is no joke.

Very strong, make sure you lock it out fully at the top though. Might have gotten a red light for that one. Probably just overexcited.

Olympic lifters don't use hook grips because they snatch and clean and press.
hannel19 2 years ago
They release the hook when the bar is on their shoulders
