i have a qb78 xp tuned witch puts out around 770 fps with .177 and I use silver arrow pellets. i can kill a seagull or a squirrel from 30 yards . Clean instant kill from any place i shoot. The point is massive internal organ damage can caused by any pellet. if you hunt there is nothing to e humane about. Your ending a another creatures life that you had no business taking in the first place. FYI again, if you don't head shot its a living hell as there brain slowly dies!
i believe all the comments are from people in america who can legally buy an air rifle over 12 fp of energy. i live in scotland i have 2 pcp air rifle which have exactly the same velocity 710 fps one is 177 the other is 22 i kill rabbits at forty yards with the 177 and fifty with the 22 all kill straight away unless i miss the logic you have about caliber should only be applied for heart and lung shots and even though 177 are faster they lose their fps faster than 22
I'm a bit tired of people advocating expensive, high velocity, pellet rifles as the only option for hunting or pest control. During my youth decades ago, many (including myself) routinely used far less powerful pellet & BB guns to successfully hunt birds and squirrels, or eliminate pests. Most relatively inexpensive midrange (400-750 fps) .177 pellet guns today are far more powerful than those years ago, yet many today still insist they cannot or should not be used. Hogwash is my reply to that.
i disagree with what you are saying about the fps, i use a 11.4 ft/lb of energy which i think is producing around about 600-750 fps im not sure because i have never tested it but i will soon, i can cleanly and humanely dispatch pigeons, crows, rats, magpies and other animals like that. just thought i would tell you all that before you try and buy a 1000 fps air rifle, odviously it is better to have a 1000 fps air rifle but not always neccesary, anyway gr8 vid :)
I've got a beeman 1041 and I haven't gone hunting yet cause I didn't know what to shoot and now that I saw your vid I'm sure to know what to shoot now:) great vid
a cat attacked a bird in my yard and i scared it away. the bird was damaged and was unable to continue living so i grabbed my pellet gun and a wad cutter pellet (only ones i hade at the time) and put it out of its missery... poor birdy -_-
you are right my cousin has a .177 and he can kill almost every thing i can kill with my walther falcon hunter .22 1000 fps. just .22 will deliver more damager.
dude i killed 2 rabbits today with my .177 air or pellet gun using pointed but i guess hollow point works too ill give it a go since im going to be huntting when the sun sets today and when it rises tomorrow
@yoasianguykid i found out another thing about pointed pellets and that is that pointed pellets don't penetrate more than round nose pellets because the pointed pellets distribute more energy outward inside the target. I found this out by testing pointed pellets, round nose, and target tips. round nose will give you more of a chance of accupunturing because it penetrates like a steel bb.
@soulonfire6666666666 GO to charlie datuna.com and go under airgun info and upload airgun calculator. then put in 600 feet per sec. and the weight of the pellet and it will give you the fpe/ foot pound of energy. you need about 4 foot pounds of energy just to kill squirrel. but need 12 to hunt jack rabbit cotton tail are more fragial. so you could hunt up to basicly a rabbit. hey if it is a pump gun you can pump it more than the recomended
if its a close 20 yds max shot with a domed style pellet(jsb exacts, beeman kodiaks) and the shot was perfect in the brain then yes. but ground hogs are tuff animals and if you dont get the perfect brain shot you will most likly injure it and it will run off. also you need a pretty high powered gun. fast .177 gun, heavy domed pellets and brain.
@ANMSJM i wouldn't try it duck hunting is more of a shot gun thing unless your stalking the duck and you know your going to get a head shot then I guess its ok to use on ducks
you just denied everything i thought about the tip pointed bullets... i always thought it was about a clean through hit but i guess your way makes mor sence
Pointed pellets help with accuracy (especially at lower FPS muzzle velocities). So it's a bit of a trade-off, depending on your own skills. If you're shooting at targets that are stationary and you can get close, take the head shot and use pretty much any pellet you want. But to be a better hunter and get more clean kills, I recommend a scope and heavy hollow points. Once a hollow point enters the body it usually blossoms out and tumbles. This causes massive internal damage, which is good.
airgunman971 : Accually he is right it called an acupuncure when the pellet passes through the animal without inflicting mortal damage. this will normaly happed with a .177. how this acupuncure happens is when the pellet passes through the organs so fast with something so small the wound seals. the animal will die but probably in a day to a couple weeks. but the animal is still in great pain so it's not that humane. sometimes you could shoot an animal and not know you hit it and run away.
I went up to palmdale desert today with my gamo big cat 1200, i used lead pointed pellets which go 1000 fps instead of 1200 fps if i woulda used my pba ammo( but i have less than 50). I really saw not much birds. i was just destroying targets haha. Do you have any info of hunting with a gamo big cat 1200? Im using RWS SuperPoint Extra 4.5 mm cal .177.
Gamo makes some nice rifles. Very accurate. If you're gonna hunt with any .177 caliber gun, I'd highly recommend a heavier hollow point pellet with any gun that fires at 1000fps. That's plenty of speed, but you risk only maiming anything with any size to it that you don't hit right in the head or through the heart or lungs. Higher FPS helps with accuracy at distance (usually), but can also cause more pass-throughs, where your pellet does not cause enough internal damage without a head shot.
@swebbie higher fps dosn't help with accuracy at distance if your shooting a realy light pellet. because it will break the sound berier and cause the pellet to tumble and go off course.
@slimjim905 I do, get the GTR-III trigger on charlie datuna.com once you get that trigger for that big cat you could put that pellet eny where you want.
ok.....i live in southern california......closest woods is in private property.... can anyone help me find a way to find some legal hunting ground. maybye a website or idk.
hunting gground you let me know wat you need and ill make it happen hunting ground?do you need a license?if thats the case i suggest you go to the local gun store and ask for wat permit you need.
actually you do need a small game license to hunt game excluding sparrows, starlings, and pidgeons. and in most cities and towns if cops see you shooting high powered air rifles they can arrest you. and also sometimes even 1000fps isnt enough to kill a squirrel. i have had to take as many as three shots before it is dead.
i live in northern cali. i own a crosman storm xt fixed with a center point 3-9X32 scope. my ammo is premier .177 cal. hollow points. my gun is rated at 1200 fps. let me tell you i have no problem taking out game as big as a raccoon, from a range of 40 yards. by the way i agree with the head shot rule.
lol 22 cal is way better for hunting then 177 because it has more droping power and more penatration.and with the 22 cal u can hit more accurately then 177 cal at longer ranges and hit just as accurately at short range
i agree with every thing but the hallow points and the fps, really anything above 650 will get a kill if you are less than 40 yards, also, the hallow points are good, but unacuret, the pointed will go throught cleanly, like he said, but there so much more accurate that head shots are insured
@BanacheckHQ Lead shot in hunting big game is a problem that most hunter safety courses address. There have been higher levels of lead found in hunted game that are the result of lead from the bullet or shot. I would be careful to clean the area where lead came into contact with the game very well. There is probably a hunting site on the web that could tell you more. I don't think eating a little hunted game from time to time will make your children have three arms or anything.
im from Australia. i have a gamo that is 12years old i have killed wallabies stone dead with match ammo from 25 meters. and birds and rats from easy 80 meters with the domed . it was a realy accurate air gun. every animal should be a head shot.if u cant head shot it don't shot it.
all in all the round nose are a good all around pellet.. they hit hard, they are good for long distances and are pretty accurate... the jbs polymags are a exellent pellet also
that bullshit about the pointed pellets. The winchester pointed pellets would be one of the best for hunting. i was shooting 3/4 grown hares in the chest dropping them on the spot. i also shot a very large hare that was larger than a fox terrier or jack russel and dropped it with one shot to the shoulder at about 25-35 yards with a 1000fps air gun
No, it isn't BS, Nick. I didn't say pointed pellets can't kill. I said they weren't as assured of killing as hollow points. Hollow points blossom out and tumble through the animal's insides. @swebbie Actually to correct you, Not all pointed pellets are bad for hunting.(I.E) Predator PolyMags©.
PolyMags© are the best hunting pellets made, The actually lead shelling around the tip mushrooms around the impact while lauching the polymer tip into the body destroying any internals in its way and exits the body. The entry wound is big and the exit wound is even bigger! Therefore these pellets are best for hunting. Also Gamo© RedFire and BlueFire include polymer tips. Good Day to you Sir!
