Mac Office 2008 Alternatives

iWork is kewl, but I'm not a big iWork user. Also the thing is, I can't choose doc or docx, same with xls, ppt, yeah... then I have to go to File, Save, or red light, Save, and rename the file every time.

OpenOffice is free and it's awesome but it would be nice if they could make it look like a Mac app.

Microsoft Office 2008 right now would be the true best office suite for Mac if you can afford it. It's more like the Windows version which I have, and it's more like a Mac Office program.

I strongly disagree that iWork and NeoOffice are better than Office 2008. Sure, Keynote is a million times better than Powerpoint, but Excel is much better than Numbers, and Word is better than Pages. I'm a student, and I often have to write scientific papers, and for that Pages and Numbers are a pain. Excel and Word is a lot more accustomed for advanced users, while iWork is more for the general user. NeoOffice always crashes on my mac.

Also, the language support is best on Office 2008.

@chrypton1 Instead of NeoOffice use OpenOffice. NeoOffice is very poor and has more problems than OpenOffice.

And OpenOffice is better looking.

I agree that I like Office 2008 (And I think 2011, I didn't get to really use 2011) better than iWork. iWork is cheaper but I prefer MS Office.

yeah!! I've got Iwork on my Macbok pro and I was simply disappointed. Now I have to work with pages which makes me go *RAE%R2r`!. The spellcheck in iwork is shi*. But since I have to write in three languages it is neccessary for me to either buy myself office 08 mac or downgrade to my IBM 233mhz previous laptop. - I only have windows 2000, which doesn't work on macs. (No, I hate Parallels).

I love OpenOffice. It's very nice software, very user-friendly, and works with all MS Office file types. And yes, it's free. Not only that, but you can't beat getting Base (similar to MS Access), Draw (similar to early versions of CorelDRAW), and Math (similar to MS Equation Editors as well.

could be that he may have not used it or liked it. After all, there is the compatibility issues between MSOffice and iWork. As for me, I use Openoffice 3 because the compatibility between MS Office and it are great. Also, OpenOffice is free. Oh well, we have our own opinions.

well it's not.Idiotic is not taking advantage of those things that you can.Macs give you the chance to run windows (either by dual booting in windows or by using fusion to run windows inside a window :P) thus giving you the chance to take advantage of anything that windows can offer and that you want ^^

I find it idiotic how stupid you are. I get the feeling that you think all Mac users who have Windows on their computer use it all the time. Well, at least every OS runs like how it should, even the hacked OS X does not give you an idea of how the OS runs. After all, if web designers/developers did not need to test in IE, then Windows would be pointless on any machine. There is also the fact that people are stupid enough to create sites that block both operating systems and browsers.

I disagree. You can stick commercial software like Adobe products on a Mac. Besides, Photoshop does beat GIMP any day. I also, disagree with Office 2007 being the best. MS change the interface way too quickly and it just won't make things very compatible with the older versions. In fact, if you tried doing something that works better with the 2007 formats, it will make those attributes non-editable on office 2004/203 or older.

I never doubted that Photoshop doesnt work on a Mac, but it works just as well (with more functions) on a PC. Office 2007 IS better, while it is compatible (Save as...for whatever version you want) it is the only office suite that gives me a proper and easily integrated Formula Editor, which is vital for me as I do a lot of Math.

Nope, it is the same functions on a PC. The only thing different is something that is buit into the operating system and that is looking up the tool you need in photoshop under the help menu and highlights its exact location, but that only works on a Mac. I have used Office 2007 for my college class and even now MS just made it worse than the older versions. If they slowly changed to that interface, I might have a different opinion.

continued from last reply: I was not persuaded by looks and commercials. In fact, all the commercial did was tell me that it finally got something that gave me an advantage over my old Windows 2000 PC. I had used a Mac for a full school year back in High School, so that means I was very used to it and because the interface worked much better that was another reason that I got one (other than the fact iMacs are the cheapest All-in-One computers and I don't deal with hardware anyway).

If you are familiar with the layout of Office 2007 and are comfortable with it (you don't want to try something else, or you can't use something else), you should stick with Mac Office 2008. iWork '08 opens Office 2007 files as well.

Apple's Pages is amazing. I think it's better than mac office 2008, it has amazing templates too. Pages is part of the iWork '08 suite
