I used to hear Independence Day on Hannity and always thought the singer had a remarkable voice. Didn't know who she was then. Years later when I found out it was Martina I was totally hooked on her. Greatest singer I've ever heard, and totally beautiful in looks and personality. Independence Day always gives me goosebumps listening to it.

I have a sister who was born on the 4th of July, and that's one reason why I have served on the Navy side as well as the Army side for over 17 years now, and am proud to do so.

The song is about domestic violence, but in a broader way could very well be symbolic at a national level, say for example the abuse American colonists felt at the hand of King George and his government in Great Britain. Surely that situation was unjust too, enough to eventually spark a revolutionary war in fact. As for critics or haters of the song or how it is discussed, they will do what they will.

I heard this song a long time ago while i was station in Kaneohe Bay, Hawaii and never paid attention to the words and the message that Martina McBride was sending. I always taught that it was a song of patriotism boy was i wrong. Listening to the song now, I understand the message that she is sending. The message is about the Tiranny and destrucyion that Domestic Violence takes on both the victim and the aggressor. This song should be the anthem for victims of Domestic violence.

Once again, this song was not interpreted for it's original mean at this concert. Look at the signs in the audience. They didn't or weren't concerned with the parts about abuse or killing, all they heard was "let freedom ring", and getting back at those who did us wrong. That's all they heard, and at that time, that's all the song was about. I thank you for attempting to educate me, but I'm already there!

The verses of the song are very clear about what the song is about. However, the chorus can be used and interpreted a number of ways. But basically the chorus is about how the system, being imperfect, still can work, because it is about the people, not the system. "They took a few names and sent me to the country home"-even when the system is wrong, it has the capability to be right WHEN THE RIGHT PEOPLE run it. So yeah, it could be definitely interpreted as a patriotic song.

Actually, the other interpretation that people have of this song is also that of an abusive relationship - that of the government (the abuser) and the people (the wife).
There's no doubt that successive federal governments have abused the American people, like Bush's Patriot Act or Obama's Cap & Trade, government-run healthcare or irresponsible spending.
People see this song as a declaration of their independence from our oppressive leaders.
