  • I keep hitting replay.

  • Reapersun and John Green, thank you for listening to good music.

  • If every person has one song that describes them perfectly, one song that sounds completely beautiful to them and makes them feel good even when they're down, no matter how many times they listen to it -

Then this is certainly my song.

(Thank you, John Green, for listening to extraordinary music.)

  • I'm here because of both John Green, Reapersun AND The Mountain Goats. Does that make me a Sherfighter Goat? Because if it does I'm totally okay with it.

  • Wow. I just raped replay button. Hard.

  • The fact that Annie Clark (st. Vincent) is the woman doing back-up, and there are nerdfighters in te comments has made me really happy. Ahh... tMG, St vincent, and Nerdfighteria my three favourite things all in one place <3

  • Never a truer word said... Pleaaaaaase!

  • @walkerbot21 it's no coincidence that the Mountain Goats are John Green's favorite band. Just sayin.

  • Thumbs up if you're here because of reapersun and her perfection!

  • @earthborne I was just going to write that!!! :D:D:D

  • this song gives me the same feeling that i got at the end of paper towns...

  • @walkerbot21 I thought that was just me. DFTBA

  • @razorpredator becaus they're awesome

  • Whys it called the mountain goats if most of the song are done by John

  • "And the dream went on forever, one single static frame, sometimes you wanna go where everybody knows your name" - best Cheers reference EVER

  • Many Mointain Goats songs are really depressing, but they don't make you feel bad, because they make you realise how real and life-like everything is, if you understand what I mean.

I can't help but feel at least a bit better about myself when I hear John sing "I dreamt that I was perched atop a throne of human skulls/On a cliff above the ocean, howling wind and shrieking seagulls/And the dream went on forever, one single static frame/Sometimes you want to go where everyoby knows your name"

  • I C people talking about depression, listening to depressed like music doesn't help either lol.I used to be depressed too but I now know that listening to cheerfull shit helps, like the song "this year", also by the mountain goats, it helps get me through the night at my job, IM GONNA MAKE IF IT KILLS ME, what im trying to say is you cant feel sorry for yourself all the time ,oh my hearts an autoclave, pfft, you gotta love yo self. But I know even I cant help it sometimes.

  • It's a while since I heard this.

I forgot how brilliant it was.

  • Such a classic. Best song I heard in awhile. I missed it so much.

  • I almost want to believe that every song this band performs is given to them from anonymous sources for them to perform. If all of this music is written with sincerity, John must be extremely sad. There is a cost for art.

  • @WillBrendon I think there is a serious query to be made of this. I wonder how many great people there are who are renowned for being happy most of the time?

  • @WillBrendon no shit man. a lot of people wnt to pick the brain of great artists, but honestly im afraid of what is happening in someone like john. i mean take, for example, this song, no children, and cubs in five. all written many years apart, yet all of them so full of pain. must be a burden to feel like he does.

  • @dontbeawitness I feel that all people feel a relative pain but only the very few have the words to express it.

  • @dontbeawitness yup depression is hell. without depression there is no hell u cant get anyworse off

  • @dontbeawitness Ive heard that the mountain goats try to never write about their personal lives. All of their songs are made up stories about made up people. If this is true, then that really says something about their artistic ability that they can evoke all these intense emotions in people just on their imaginations. But fiction always borrows from non fiction in some way or another.

  • fucking beautiful

  • Greatest random insert of a line from Cheers ever.

  • Man, the Mountain Goats are so great.

  • @hotpinkelephant11 so great.

  • I promise all of you, every single thing that the mountain goats do will rock you to your knees, if you have a soul their music will touch it. Rock on! Cry hard! Love!

  • His heart may be a terrible cave of doom, but autoclave rooms are always nice and warm. Good for hugs?

  • A great, unstable mass of blood and foam... What a brilliant metaphor.

  • the reference to the cheers theme makes me want to listen to the cheers theme.

  • I do quite love this song. The singer has a great voice, and I think the lyrics are thought provoking.

  • Love the song live/acoustic, can't stand the synths or drums here.

...my god, I've become one of *those* people.

    D:

  • @ThisHereUsername *gasp* a mountain goats purist! How dare you, good sir (or madam).

I unno. The drummed version has grown on me.

  • heart as autoclave = kickass metaphor

  • I wonder if Warren Zevon would have been a Mountain Goats fan

  • Lol @ the single thumbs down.

    n00b.

  • @RememberTheTrees Everyone's entitled to their own opinion.

  • @LatiasSaphira

    Indeed they are.

  • The person who gave this a thumbs down has doesn't know good music when they hear it.

  • "And I reach deep down within, but the pathways twist and turn

and theres no light anywhere, and nothing left to burn."

There wasn't much light... until I heard that line.

  • @BorgEntertainment Darnielle's lyrics can be truly invaluable when it comes to things like that, yeah? and there's so much of it. all good.

  • Favorite.

  • "No emotion thats worth having could call my heart its home." I'm a fan for life.

  • Jesus Christ, in the comments section of this video, what the fuck is going on? It's fucked more on here than the half viral videos.

  • I feel like I'm watching some weird, screwed up romance unfold, on a youtube thread of all places.

  • @Paradox781 listen to johns albums in order in succession, and you will feel that even more. and more. and more as you do.

  • I think I'm addicted

  • Alright, this may sound lame, but I'm on youtube and even if everyone of you thinks this is hilarious or dumb of me to say, but I can't feel too bad because youtube messages aren't really that important.

    An average song sounds good.

A good song will make show you what the writer/singer was feeling when he made it.

But a great song makes you feel what the person that made it was feeling at the time that he did so.

And the mountain goats deliver the latter again and again.

    I'm a fan for life.

  • @asugar agreed. most i can say without getting too lame...is ... i dunno, word? totally true though. right on.

  • Amen, TheLionside.

  • This is so good.

  • i wonder what kind of geniuses if we made kids listen to the mountain goats instead of mozart

  • Your grammar is abysmal, and I would brand you a veritable moron, but you embrace The Moutnain Goats, so this speaks enough in your favor that I will not make a big deal about it.

  • sorry i was really tired when i wrote that, perhaps you could just use a permanent marker instead of a brand, and slip me some diazepam

  • Moutnain??? Speak for yourself about morons.

  • How ironic that you should spell The Mountain Goats wrong. Don't call people 'morons' on youtube, it speaks volumes about your courage and sniveling attitude. Yes, I love grammar and hate it when people get it wrong. No, I don't worry about it in an online community.

  • indie slapfight on youtube, woo woo

  • woot! let the endless pointless grammar correcting begin!

  • The whole thing?!

  • and we have a winner

  • @TheLionside LOL LOL LO L OL OL

  • John Darnielle has never done anything that wasn't incredible and this album was no exception.

  • Hübsch gut

  • This song reminds me of every relationship I ever get into. I gather that John thought he was writing fiction :)

  • Damn it. Now I have to buy this album.

  • do it, or download it.

    it's a great album

  • So in love with this album, and this band. John Darnielle is a genius.

  • is that Rachel Ware doing the backing?

  • Fantastic song. I've been looking for a version with good sound! Thanks for posting.

  • it is a great song. I'd never heard it before :)

  • nice name

  • Why thank you - assuming your referring to my name, not the song name! Same to you!
