Je ne peux pas écouter cette versions sans laisser échapper furtivement quelques larmes d'émotion. Un Ange a vécu parmi nous, et nous avons eu la chance d'être ses contemporains... Repose en paix.
I love the pictures! Canalletto's London paintings are superb, and IMO better than his Venetian ones if only because they haven't been plastered over five million biscuit tins/carrier bags etc...
Estoy de acuerdo con el gusto de Sfkcbf. Además reconozco que me gustan los otros que ha nombrado a los que agrego a Lesne y Jaroussky. Hermoso y cerca de Dios.
I carefully compared recordings (part 1) of Deller, Bowman, & Blaze. Of the 3, Deller is my favorite. Blaze is average. Bowman's is good and avoids the strain found occasionally in Deller's voice. Deller, however, has an intensitiy that better matches the trumpet, which is played with greater precision and brightness than the other recordings. Deller's is slower by 1/2 minute, lending a greater sonority and gravity to the performance. I wish that Scholl would do it with the best trumpet.
Wonderful - many, many thanks for posting this, essenciademusica - your alias is aptly chosen. There's also a nice version you can find here with Wynton Marsalis and Kathleen Battle. And it took me several minutes to stop laughing after reading the exchange following the "Handel, not Purcell" comment. I know it was inappropriate but my sense of humor simply will not mature for some reason.
There is a rather beautiful version of this by Agnes Baltsa and Wynton Marsalis - much pacier without losing the lilting melodic flow but possessing a haunting quality which I don't find in this piece.
It is mostly thanks to Deller and his legacy that counter tenor singing came back into mainstream music making. Prior to him, and then Russell Oberlin, it was only in church choirs ,mostly in the English speaking world, that this type of voice was heard. Bowman , Esswood, Pushee, Scholl et al all acknowledge their debt to him.
Wasn't this done in one take - the first? I think vanguard records. I hazily remember a incredible UK radio 3 prog say six or eight years ago on Dellor. I have the tape.
please! This is NOTHING compared to the version performed by Choir Of King's College, Cambridge and the Academy of Ancient music with Stephen Cleobury and counter tenor Robin Blaze! Now that is the spirit of Händel. This is just excrutiating. Sorry Deller fans, but his voice could be... a little more perfected no?
I would like to hear Andreas Scholl do this... now that would be something. *dreaming*
That would amaze me much. Deller is absolutely incomparable, and this especially as I can't find on YouTube the Haendel's performance which you recommend. Will you have the kindness to put it on-line?
If you would instruct me to do so, I would gladly do it!
I'm sort of a newbie when it comes to youtube, forgive my ignorance!
And forgive again; perhaps I was a bit harsh in my opinions, however, Deller IS comparable. Much has happened since Deller's time. But bless him for opening the world to counter-tenor voices!
You are very affirmative in your sayings ,see your comments 3 months ago. Of course it's your rights but don't be surprised to be counteract. The whole world isn't against you.Personnally I never criticize artists, because I respect them (and people who appreciate them)a lot and most of all I know that I don't possess the truth. There are many renditions, everybody can find his Heaven.
I would recommend all to listen to other version of this *Händel* aria. Put things in perspective. Deller's voice is to shaky for my taste; a little of balance.
Though I wouldn't expect anyone to agree with me of course.
I think that my viewings have contributed 20 to the count, although I do prefer the first half of the video. I can imagine myself present while this was recorded. What an experience that would be!

I don't care what anybody says. This man's voice is alarmingly unpleasant. The music is good, though.

Exquisite. If only Alfred Deller were alive today to hear what he helped to resurrect with Renaissance and Baroque vocal music.
Great, pure Baroque trumpet as well in this performance.
