i think he means dig it up (around the base) so that the volva remains intact. if he cuts it, he doesnt have the volva anymore.

why the hell would you want to keep tha volva, apart from photographing purposes?? I really dont get what you mean! Keep in mind, I very well know what I am talking about :) Digging up mushrooms or pulling out with the hand can seriously damage the mycelium. The guy in the video is doing right. Preserve! Only Dig u up / pull mushrooms for indentification purposes!

but, if you dig around the base of the volva, and take it out, it comes out VERY easily. in fact, it is much easier than cutting it with the knife, and isnt damaging like cutting it with the knife is.

I already said what you are suggesting is potentially harmful to the mycelium - furthermore, it's not easier to dig up instead of cutting low at the stem base + moreover, cutting ain't damaging at all except if you cut your veins.
