@almamon Can you suggest another way to demonstrate jiyu-kumite in a public forum? The Seishin Shotokan Karate isn't my club or my style, but its website offers a good explanation of the different applications of jiyu-kumite. Many other sites define/translate shiai as "a contest," originally in judo, but later in other martial arts. I suggest that what is at issue is a matter of translation or of terminology.

@myteric117 Another way could be (using gloves of course) letting the fighters use other techniques like shutos, kakutos, nukites, projections, etc... in a controlled and soft mode. That's how i think the Jiyu kumite is taken, you'll be able to use what you actually learned in katas and kihon.

Furthermore, drop out the one-point-stop system and allow to keep a continous fight until one of them surrenders or is disabled. "Live long and prosper" (:
