the reason she did not win the competition was prmarily because she chose to represent Philippines instead of New York.

Eileen Ford ask her (Melanie) to represent New York (since she was based there at that time at Ford MOdelling Agency) and assured her of the title but she DECLINED, ergo, SHE LOST. Melanie said so。

She was far better than Monica Schnarre and the rest of the candidates..

Soon after the country saw her commendable performance in 1986 Ford Supermodel competition, the Philippines started sending candidates to modelling competitions like Supermodel of the World, Elite Look of the Year, etc... Melanie is truly an icon.

Melanie is one of a kind. After 20 years of sending candidates to the modelling competitions world-wide, none has ever replicated her commendable performance in 1986. The closest so far is Charo Ronquillo but still, she is no match for Melanie. Had Melanie stayed longer & persevered in New York to pursue supermodel status, she could have been the first Filipina that could sashay alongside Cindy Crawford, Linda Evangelista, Christy, Claudia and Naomi.

She had all the opportunities but she gave all that up to return to the Philippines and the movies.
