I've said it before, but I really think it's awesome that you're experimenting with painting. I think all forms of art are really about refining the way we see the world. Painting self portraits involves the practice of both observing ourselves and examining the physical objects in the mirror/photo. A worthwhile pursuit, imo. <3
@dizzirt -- I think that's true. I didn't feel like I got a whole lot out of Betty Edward's book, but the one thing I loved was the implication that art was about 'seeing' more than 'doing.'
@johnofjordan That makes me think of another thing. Anyone who would make a snide comment about closing your eyes when painting probably doesn't know anything about painting. My sister is an incredible painter, but when she was in high school, I remember her throwing paintings out and saying, "I suck." No, she didn't suck. She was learning! So are you.
My only bits of advise is to push what your doing, don't feel scared that you might destroy a painting, also should check out some galleries if you get the chance, it'll give you idea on how other people paint and what images they come up with.
