And they say British Rail was a bad company. At least they kept the trains running, whatever mother nature would throw at them. Thats more than can be said for the bus companies, it snows 1 flake of snow and the service is cancelled completely! Great vid! Priceless 5* footage!
From what i remember, back in these days the HST windows were double glazed and the outer layer would often get broken by flying ballast or vandals.
But in those days the next station would be called and informed of the breakage and you would occasionally see the train crew knock out the remains of the broken glass leaving the inner glass safe and the train to continue it duty.
I had the chance to 'enjoy' 3 hours spent on a SWT Desiro stranded just outside Woking during the snow this year. To their credit, the train itself was working fine, despite massive arcing coming from the third rail and loads of wheelslip; in the end, the reason for the problems was due to the points freezing and then breaking, both in front and behind us. The train itself was fine and was able to drive us back once the track had been fixed.
To be fair.. HST's don't rely on a third rail to make them go. Southern,South Eastern & South West Trains (and London Transport) do and if the snow settles on the juice rail you can kiss goodbye to your source of power to the train! Even the old slam door stock ground to a halt in the snow
The difference with the slammers & todays EMU's is a diesel loco be could put on the front of a slammer and dragged round to maintain a service of some sort. Cant do that now.
Fair comment but even in the days of the slammer you would never find that many diesels available to keep services or indeed lines open. Once a train got stuck in the snow it effectively stuck everything else on the line too thus blocking access for a diesel to rescue a train!
I once remember a driver who drove HST,S for BR telling me he was once in Scotland when blizzards and snow fall was bad and when he arrived at the station he the second man and the passengers could not leave the train due to all the door locks and windows been encased in ice and had to wait for platform staff to use blow touches to unfreeze the locks and doors so there is the tale. Luke.....
I have some old footage hidden away of a hst cab ride in Scotland in a blizzard and you cannot even see the tracks. Trains have been stopped down here for frozen points back in Nov.
Another classic video David and thanks for sharing it...Compliments of the Season to you as well, or as we Welsh say..Nadolig Llawen a Blwyddyn Newydd Dda..5*..Bob

Another thing I see is that one of the HST's predecessors, the Class 55 'Deltic' Royal Scots Grey is on hire hauling freight.
Like finding a equally famous horse pulling a coal cart.

A very dirty HST that is! That's stupid - a speed restriction of 70!!! I can't believe it! That's slower than a snail.

Some should send this to south eastern trains and south west trains. What happened the last time it snowed?, they gave up?.
