Hi there...could anyone help me out here please!!! I need a transliteration on this piece if I could! Am a music teacher and would really appreciate it if you could help me out! Thanks
In short, I think we are kind of cross between Doric Greek and Slav. But where does that leave us? Our Greek ties distinguish us from other Slavs, and our Slavic ties distinguish us from the Greeks.
We are a unique blend, and though we share we great deal with our regional neighbors culturally, we are (and deeply feel) distinct from them.
We have no right to threaten Greek culture, which should be respected and celebrated. But I do think we deserve the right to be recognized.
I think all the Balkan people is just a blend of many different ancient races and tribes. All these arguments that say that modern Greeks or Slavomacedonians are direct Great Alexander's descendants are nonsense. I think the matter of recognition and name of your country must depend on a geographic basis so that Greek Macedonians,Bulgarian Macedonians and your people have a unique ID (e.g. Slavomacedonians, North/Upper Macedonians) and no future territorial and other ethnic demands are implied.
The difficulty is that the territory claimed by the modern Republic was a part of "Macedonia" (both in antiquity, and more recently during Ottoman rule). It seems a bit silly to have to turn our back on the name altogether, since it is accurate. But this isn't what you suggested.
You are 100% correct. I am Greek and I am sick and tired of listening to the nationalists and the fascists propagandize their poison and dividing neighboring people. By doing so, they are helping others benefit from balkan pain and misery.
In truth, nationalism is a disease that's been created by social elite to control people. Subscribing to such nonsense only makes one seriously backwards and simple.
I agree with your search for the objective truth, I'd love to know it too. But I can assure you the truth is a lot more complex than an explanation in a few paragraphs. Don't mind the silly nationalists giving you shit, they're probably Europeans and are only starting to grasp the idea of globalism as a result of the EU.
huh..... Greek against nationalism??? its the first time I met a greek on youtube who is against nationalism...most of you greeks believe in Hitler-style extreme nationalistic theories...
Learn to call your race SLAV or BULGARIAN. Greeks have the larger Macedonian territory and only southern Greeks have the right to self identify as Macedonians.
You only have a few years on me, according to your profile.
I fully acknowledge my Slavic ethnic ties without a shred of shame, but though I speak a Slavic language, I am not culturally like other Slavs in many respects (Bulgarians included). What, then, should I call myself?
I don't care about land disputes, or all of the backward, nationalistic rhetoric being thrown around on either side in this debate. My commitment is to objective truth, if such a thing is attainable.
As far as I'm concerned, you can call us whatever you like, provided you recognize that we have a unique cultural identity that has been in some way shaped by the geography of our homeland (which has historically been a part of the region of "Macedonia" for centuries).
Ok. First i am sorry for the offence. You seem more logical than most of your people. I just want to say that your race have only 17 years of history. How can you call yourshelf Macedonian? Can you tell me something that you guys have done all that years? Any History fact? How a small nation like yours, can deny that Alexander the Great born here in Greece from Greek parents? Your people are brainwashed and you know that! Its' simple fucking politics!
I don't see how it is possible for a race to have only seventeen years of history. I readily grant that the nation of FYROM is only seventeen years old, but the people living there necessarily have a much longer historical background - they must have come from somewhere.
If your measure of a culture's history only includes the years in which it is a part of a unified, independent nation, then Greek culture is only 187 years old at best - historically, Greeks were never united in a single nation of Greece until the conclusion of their War of Independence against the Turks, yet you rightfully lay claim to a rich history that stretches long before this time.
I wouldn't deny for a moment that Alexander's dynasty (the Argead dynasty) claimed Greek descent from Kings of Argos. But Alexander's cultural identity is difficult to pinpoint. He was born in Pella (which at the time lay within the borders of ancient Macedonia - an independent kingdom, unlike the City States of Attica and the Peleponnese in political and social organization), and his mother was from Epirus (a region contested with the Illyrians).
I think even in Alexander's day, there was uncertainty as to the nearness of the relation between Macedonians and other Greek-speaking peoples. We know from various sources that ancient Greeks promulgated differing views of their Macedonian neighbors depending on what was politically expedient at the time - some called the Macedonians kin, others foreign barbarians, suggesting that even in ancient times the situation was ambiguous.
My personal belief is that the ancient Macedonians were a Doric tribe (of very near relation to their southern neighbors), who not only spoke Greek regularly but aspired to many aspects of Greek culture. I believe that modern Macedonian Slavs are descendants of these, and perhaps other Thracian peoples from Paionia, who were slavicized in the 6th century.

Well said. It's funny that kokolo00 attacks Greek music because in it lay the foundations of both Turkish and European music.
I have heard traditional Balkans and Turkish music and they show some similarities with the Greeks- Rembetika, from what I have read, originates in Asia Minor by the way and were originally laments.

From a Dutchman to a Turk:

God damn, do Greeks really look like this?
Scary... :O)
Somebody better tell them there exists such a thing as a haircut, manicure, etc.

Heres my not so great translation, I only know a bit of Greek...
Tonight its heavy, tonight its heavy, my broken heart
Tonight gets dark and the streets are deserted/lonely
and my girl still hasn't come.
Tonight its heavy my broken heart
Tonight the poor man (referring to himself), I will stay alone
I will lay my head on a cold pillow, and from the black tears sleep will come take me.
Tonight its heavy, tonight its heavy, my broken heart.

This is Rembetiki Kompania, the first group that revived rebetiko music (rebetika). This video must be around late 70s. They are still around but individually, not as a band. The guitarist who sings is Dimitris Kontogiannis, the bouzouki player is Manolis Dimitrianakis, the baglama player George Kontogiannis
