  • Aw, the little girl looks just like Dorothy! So sad that they would have lost her only a decade later.

  • Funny how times change- back then nobody would blink at a boy being named "Dickie", but today no one would DARE name their child that! Nowadays, if someone's name was Richard, the nickname would be Rich or Rick, etc., NEVER Dick!

  • I'm assuming the boy and girl were around 8-9 years old in this clip, which meant they lost their mother when they were in their late teens or right around 20. Their younger brother was 11 when Dorothy died.

  • Gee, they almost have chins...

  • My mom named me Jill because she loved Dorthy and she named her daughter Jill too hehe

  • how about that?? A bow and a curtsie....kids with RESPECT for their elders! WOW

  • There are pros and cons regarding any era. While it's good that kids were more polite back then, things like abuse and equality were very much ignored and brushed under the carpet. I'm glad some things have changed in today's world but I wish other things would make a comeback. If only we could pick and choose!

  • How did kids loose these basic manners over the years?

  • @jvolstad It started in the "Hippie" movement. Manners were considered part of the establishment. Growing up, in the 1960's one respected teachers, if one swore, they wou ld have their mouth washed out with soap. One treated parents with respect. In fact it was inappropriate to call any adult by their first name.

  • I should say 'most kids' in relation to my other comment

  • Oh, my gosh those kids were so clever! And look how the girl curtsies to the panel--don't see THAT now awadays--kids are too busy text messaging or slouching over to look up at their elders!!! What's gone wrong here parents/folks??!!

  • @windstorm1000 The only reason a large number of teenagers are like that nowadays is mainly down to parenting. If you are looking for someone to blame, then a large proportion of that blame lies within the parents themselves, and not mainly on the children.

  • My goodness, the girl curtsied! How absolutely delightful. I haven't seen that since the last period movie I saw - maybe when Gwyneth Paltrow curtsied to Judy Dench in Shakespeare in Love. Just wonderful!

  • I love Arlene's laugh at 3:30.

  • @hankaaron1961 arlene wasnt there

  • Dickie's little nod/bow to the ladies - wow!

  • This has made my day!!! Thank you.

  • I want kids like that - well behaved. And they're having so much fun, loving to fool around. "are you the mother or daughter?" Jill: "Yes!" "Are you the daughter?" Dickie: "No". "Then are you the son?" Jill: "No"

  • Jill at 3:31 looks just like Dorothy, when her eyes kind of trail off. She does look quite a bit like her mother, as an adult, but has a more elongated face/bone structure. Dickie looks quite a bit like Dick. Kerry does look like both of his parents, but more like his mother in his features.

  • They are smart as Dorothy.

  • If I ever have kids, they are so watching this to learn how to behave in public :P

    So cute, and funny!

  • Hahaha, hilarious how the two kids are messing with the panel's heads.

  • Oh my goodness that little girl just curtseyed. I'm impressed.

  • Kids always know how to play this game- just straight yes and no answers.

  • they're soooooo cute!

  • when did this air?

  • @Jantv81

    March 21, 1954.

  • The exchange from 3: 39 to 4:04 was perfect. The kids were great.

  • Lovely children. So sad about their mother.

  • I hope these Kids grew up to be as well mannered.

  • margaret truman? of harry s truman fame?

  • Yes, that's Margaret Truman, the only child of President Harry S. Truman. Truman had a brief singing career but was better known as an author, particularly the biographies of her parents.

  • Ms Truman also wrote an excellent series of mystery books, based on her inside knowledge of Washington DC. I highly recommend them.

  • @ivegotalongdong Yes, she had a singing career back in the day. Later she was an accomplished mystery writer

  • exactly. no manners with kids today.

  • oh for the days when a little girl would curtsy when meeting an adult . . .

  • Cute kids. Dark haired like their mum & dad. And fascinating to see Margaret Truman as one of the panelists. I see her murder mysteries on the used bookshelves a LOT. Before being best known as an author, I've read she was busy in the 50's as a concert pianist. Very fun episode. Many thanks for sharing it with us! :)

  • Kudos to Dorothy and her husband for instilling such beautiful manners in these children!

  • All of her notes went missing and to this day have not been found....I'm just saying!

  • Have any of you considered that Dorothy did not die accidently or by suicide....she had a big piece coming out on the Kennedy assassination which was to break the case wide open. Perhaps someone didn't want that news to air.

  • Jill answered "yes" when Steve Allen asked is she was a woman? She should have said "no." A little girl is not a "woman."

  • she thot he meant female, funkee . she was just a little girl. plus it was funny. it confused the panel

  • Very well educated children: the boy bowed to the ladies and the girl curtseyd to the four of them.

  • I agree. Richard Kollmar wasn't stable enough for raising children to begin with, and Kerry was too young to be sent to boarding school at the time.

  • I'm not sure... all three sort of did separate things in different career paths, but they may still keep in touch at least. I'd like to think they did.

  • I know Dick Jr. lives in Santa Cruz, CA- close to me incidentally- and works at a bookshop.

Jill lives down in Southern California, and is now an interior designer.

And Kerry, who by the way had a bit part in Annette Funicello's "Pajama Party" in case any of you haven't seen it, lives in Atlanta and runs a program called "Martial Harts"- which teaches karate to kids in need... so it came out well after a rocky childhood.

  • @chrishanson70 What is the name of the bookstore?

  • @jvolstad I don't know which one exactly, but that's what I've read from a source who's fairly reliable.

  • @Magickian get lost. Please learn some manners from these kids. You must be one of the teens of today with no manners or class. So go troll somewhere else.

  • oh, they are so adorable :)

  • As the children left, they were so charming in greeting the panel!

  • Arlene was soo cute putting her hand in the air.

    Lol.

  • Daly was souuu funny in this one :)))))

  • Daley does it again. He gives Miss Truman a "no" when she stated/asked if they are not in the theater at all.

  • The Leroy Sanitarium was a large hospital in New York.

  • Frank??? Frank Sinatra??? He hated her and she disliked him because of his connections to the mob. "No one liked her, ever her peers"...YOU knew her personally?

  • some people hate some jelious,

and some gals (DK ) are just plane smart////

  • 109w461, what ugly things you wrote. Are you trying to say she deserved to be murdered because you don't believe she lived a morally exempletary life? She's dead. Goodness, gracious; have some mercy!!

  • I love love LOVE that Steve Allen curtseys back at the little girl!

  • I didn't even notice that until you mentioned it! I had to go back and look at it again.

I find it very interesting how often over the months that we all keep on mentioning how polite and well-mannered the kids were, bowing and curtseying for the panel. When's the last time anyone ever saw ANY GIRL curtsey.

  • they are adorable!

  • Cute children and so polite. Whatever happened to manners? Where did they go? Things certainly have changed and I can't say I'm all too happy about it...

  • @KarinPluss this is a sad & correct settlement which can be done worlwide ( I'm french) but such kids, a few of them STILL exist fortunatly !!!!! so many adults give it up ......education is given by us , the adults !!!! the first to be blamed are their parents ...... don't you think so ????????????????

  • @redtorso Certainly is it the parents and the societies fault. People don't want to be 'mean' and 'harsh' with their children and what happens is they get spoiled and ungrateful. Children like a bit if structure and rules in their lives; it makes the free time all that better.

  • @KarinPluss Nobody is happy about kids being impolite. We are in serious trouble for letting bad influences spoil our kids.

  • @KarinPluss The parents are to blame!!!

  • so sad they lost their mother 12 yrs later.

  • @Muffy2314 Obviously not to the daughter she was embarrassed by her. The last time they spoke they had a falling out. These manners are just for show IMO.

  • A ten-year old American child knows the definition of the words "vicinity" and "environs..." how far we've fallen since then!

  • So true.

  • @evan1901 well they were raised by an amazing woman =) the great women we can look up to as role models have dwindled down to so little...

  • @jcmusic1218 Boy, you've got that right! No way I want my kids idolizing the likes of Britney Spears or Christina Aguilera!

  • @evan1901 She also curtsies when greeting adults. How many young girls would do that today?

  • @evan1901 those were the days when ebonics was not tolerated and people wanted to speak properly to be classy. Nowadays, kids only wanted to act gansta and speak like they are from the ghetto to look cool. We have to blame the society that let this happen to our children.

  • @calihartley2010 Exactly right. If one is dismissive of Rap, then one is a Rascist. While clearly there was extreme rascism back 40+ years ago, one would have to look far to find a more elegant man than Duke Ellington. Also, women were taught to be ladies, not to swear, have standards.

  • @jmrleroy well I am glad that people like you are smart enough to realize that people did have standards then. Also, if anyone looks there is still racism alive in the US, but not towards minorities but towards the white male. Also, western civilization is being crushed as being wicked, and third world civilizations are being made to look like they are stellar. If that were the case, then why do third world immigrants want to come to the US and why are third world countries still THIRD WORLD?

  • @calihartley2010 Just finished a course at college on media and marketing to children. We learned how it was essential to diminish influence positive parental figures ( mostly men) and make children the "smart ones". In the 1960's-1970's, there was a strong parental figures. One would be hard pressed to find a major TV show that a positive and respected father.

  • @jmrleroy yes i do agree. Just watch Zack and Cody and see how the mother is made to look like a fool. How different from the Brady bunch and Leave it to Beaver. No wonder kids do not respect authority. They see these shows and think that older people are outdated and stupid. No wonder young people go astray. We have to blame the liberal media for all this.

  • @calihartley2010 Try answering the question "Why did irst World" colonizers go to the "Third World" and exploit them"? Therein lies the answer to ALL of your queries.

  • @gabsylv AHH, I KNEW THIS WOULD HAPPEN. Now listen to me, you being from South Korea, you must be enjoying all the benefits from the west especially from the US. European countries did go and colonize other countries, but do you think they would be better of living in their pagan ways and culture. South Korea is a country because the US helped you from N Korea. So stop being childish and look at the present situation. Do not be stuck in the colonial past. Kumsamidha.

  • @calihartley2010 I'm white American, btw. It's not a matter of good culture over bad culture, but a matter of the strong over the weak. The effects of colonialism are more complex than simply the self-anointed White MAn;s Burden view of things, and it is not as if the west grew in power by its own resources, but developed on a racist and slavist system of brutal exploitation. Korea is divided and the N. Koreans are starving.

  • @gabsylv Yes I know and if the US had not stepped in South Korea too would be starving. I do admit that the west stole resources from other countries, but they also helped educate the locals and that is why those countries are prospering and they have some what of a western system which has helped them come up. You say you are a white american, but I guess you have white guilt which is nonsense since you had nothing to do with colonialism. Spoiling the west by being PC is what is happening.

  • @calihartley2010 the US napalmed the capital Pyeongyang in its "Manifest" and "Destined" rivalry with the Soviet Union. Still, North Korea, independent of US aid, was economically more prosperous than the South until it fell into economic devastation due to an enormous annual defense budget begun in the 60s in response to US Modernization/Containment policy. Korea was damned if it did and damned if it didn't. I live on the periphery, how would you know anything, untroubled at the center? FAIL

  • @gabsylv Well if youa re anti US then give up your US citizenship and take Korean citizenship. I do admit that the US has done some things that no american is proud of, so have other countries. Look at what Japan did to China in nanking. What i am saying is that the US and the western world is being targeted by third world trash and they are spoiling it and the stupid liberal hippies are helping them do that.

  • Comment removed

  • @gabsylv Hey wimp, why did you remove your trashy comment. Is it because you insulted Jesus Christ? What a liberal coward.

  • @calihartley2010 The first version wasn't nasty enough for a certain Youtube snake. Now it's juuuust fine!

  • @gabsylv Well atleast I am honest and open with my remarks. Not like you, you write then delete. So now who is the snake? A snake slithers and then hides away. that is what you have done.

  • @jmrleroy You are right. Duke Ellington did have standards and so did Ella Fitzgerald. Snoop dog and lill Wyane have no standards, but trash and filth in them.

  • @jmrleroy Well if your kind wasn't so one sided on just ONE genre then maybe no one would call you racist. Does Rock and Roll or that Metal crap mean anything to you?!?! Doubt it but I guess your right. Snoop Dogg is the reason those Columbine kids shot up the school. Wait a minute...................

  • who is Frank? Sinatra?

  • where did you hear all this? or read it?

  • cool. why doesn't someone make a movie about her. given her life story of racing around the world in that famous race to being killed for knowing Marilyn Monroe's murder (come on we have to go with that version). more interesting than anything else.

  • It's interesting you should ask that question because according to Variety magazine as of Oct. '08, it would appear that a movie based on a yet to be written book entitled"Good Night, Dorothy Kilgallen" is definitely in the works.

  • glad to hear that--it's long overdue. should be interesting

  • These kids look like siblings-hard to believe they had different fathers

  • They had different fathers?

  • i was responding to the previous comment before mine. i found the comment hard to believe.

  • Oh, I see.

  • Muffy2314, the son looks like Dorothy's husband and the daughter looks like her.

  • "the son looks like Dorothy's husband and the daughter looks like her"

What I was going to say.

  • I looked up her daughter, and she did a WML live in 2005 I believe, and she looks like her dad, like the shape of her face, but she has her mom's features, like her eyes and mouth and a bit of the same smile.

  • do you know where I see see that 2005 WML live show? I've been wanting to see it for a while.

  • I don't think you can actually see it anywhere that I know of. It was done out in Hollywood. Hmm to get pics of her, just google Jill Kollmar and then click on images, there's atleast 2 photos. They are a bit small, but you can still see her.

  • and her youngest, Kerry, is alll Dorothy

  • Wow! Can you see that sort of handwriting in school today? o.0

^.^ They are such lovely children!!

  • too true, that handwritting is gorgeous, the kids are so sweet :D

  • Adorable, polite little children. :)

  • How cute is it how the little girl bows as she curtsey's.. such polite children as one would expect of Ms Kilgallen!

  • I had the same thought. The boy bows for each panel member and the girl curtseys. How well brought up there were! But I suppose that was more the case in the 50s than now!

  • Sunday: March 21, 1954

  • the date of this was 21, march 1954, and she just had her baby 2 days before on the 19th. I think that's mainly why she wasn't there. And she was pregnant from mid 1953 till early 1954.

  • hey thx for the info. and talk about a coincidence, this is right smack about the time i checked in ---apr 1953. didnt mean anything against dorothy, but that certainly is/was a very happy ending to this question of mine and proved me wrong. perhaps my favorite show of all time--along with all in the family and mary tyler moore. the 4 regulars had such great chemistry. but arent u a little young to be such a bloodhound of a fan of this show?? i thought it was really for us older folks.

  • Such a cute segment. I enjoy this show so very much!

  • Thanks for posting this! I'm a true WML fan and this was so cool to see. Thanks again from Austin TX.

  • bless and funny look what manners they have!i havnt seen that since i was 3!

  • Was that Wednesday Addams?

  • no, i don't think it was

  • Wednesday wouldn't have been born yet.

  • "I had what Dorothy called, 'a weenie.'" :)

    I love arlene!

  • omg I love Arlene too. I was going to post this exact comment haha!

  • she is the best! :) the most fun and in the clips i've seen, she always seems to get it! i love her in the nudist one!

    Arlene: Dorothy, I don't think you'd go!

    Dorothy: I *CERTAINLY* wouldn't!

  • HAAAAAHAHA The nudist one is definately one of the funniest, that moment is hilllarrrious lol and the one with "Mr Napp" who also runs a nudist camp Arlene goes "Could you work your magic on me? ... Could we do it here on the stage?" haha

I always know when Arlene isn't on the panel that it won't be nearly as funny lol

  • Rest In Peace Margaret Truman

  • What adorable kids!

  • great posts. Do you have any episodes with Dean Martin or Danny Thomas?

  • no sorry

  • This is beyond classic. thanx for posting it. You have to admire the courage of the producers -- young children on live TV.
