Elton's lyricist, Bernie Taupin, wrote it but not specifically about Marilyn..although she is used in the song the intention was to be about anyone young who is cut down in their prime and not left alone by the press. BT was contacted by EJ to write a new song for Diana's funeral on short notice, BT thought EJ meant for him to rewrite CITW as stations were playing it in tribute to Diana. See Part 2..
