Remember that union benifits are a result of negotiation between management and the union. Management agrees to grant the payouts. In the case of government workers "management" is your elected officials. I have witnessed union workers caught stealing and reporting to work drunk return to the job as a result of union pressure. Maybe that type of action is the real issue?
When the economy was booming, and the private sector was making a killing, no one gave a SHIT that public sector employees didn't share in that boom.

A CEO (call him David Koch), a talk show host (call him Glenn Beck), & a talk show darling (call her Sarah Palin), are sitting at a table with a unionized public employee, & a teabagger. On the table there are 12 cookies. Koch reaches across, takes 11 cookies, gives 2 to Beck & 2 to Palin before getting up & leaving the restaurant (without paying his bill). Beck & Palin then look at the teabagger & say, "Watch out for that union guy, he’ll leave you with nothing but crumbs."

They are already trying to push our unions out of perspective because of the economic crisis. We have unions, here in Europe, for decades and yes, we pay here as well for them a small amount of money (in fact they are payed by the Gov. out of the taxes) but they are here when we need them! I would feel more confortable knowing that my tax money ends up in a protective union fond instead of ending up for senseless military spendings! Of course, that's largely false. Most Democrats have been neoliberal in their ideology. Bill Clinton was with NAFTA, Obama has been with his approach to the economy, and so have most of the senators and representatives. If America has been so entangled with unionization and its ties with Democrats, why is it at a historic low? Why are Democrats supporting trade policies which harm unions? Democrats are closer in line negative approaches to liberty, rather than positive.

This all started with Reagan's disastrous "trickle-down" economic theories which lowered the top marginal tax bracket from 70% to 50%. Remember that union benifits are a result of negotiation between management and the union. Management agrees to grant the payouts. In the case of government workers "management" is your elected officials. I have witnessed union workers caught stealing and reporting to work drunk return to the job as a result of union pressure. Why should these people give up the benefits they have fought and negotiated for over the years? To pacify an envious private sector? It is not these working people's fault that the economy is in the tank. Bill Clinton was with NAFTA, Obama has been with his approach to the economy, and so have most of the senators and representatives. This all started with Reagan's disastrous "trickle-down" economic theories which lowered the top marginal tax bracket from 70% to 50%. The problem for the average worker is not the public unions, it's the lack of unions in the private sphere. Unions used to be 25% of the workforce, it's now 8%. In the last thirty years unions declined, and the living standard with them. Want higher wages and a higher living standard for the average worker? Unionize, collectively bargain, and fight for your rights. The eight-hour work day, over-time pay, child labor laws, safe work conditions, etc all were due to the movements.
