I dont get it - what are we being shown here that is in the X-Rated Robocop that isn't in the R-rated? I know its about gore not sex, but I just saw Robocop on netfliz streaming and I don't see anything in this video that I didn't see in the R version...
@jameshulsmann The difference is only several seconds of actual footage. The director Paul Verhoeven is well known for violence. The MPAA felt that the scenes with ED-209 in the boardroom and where Paul Weller gets gunned down in the warehouse were too much. The MPAA asked Verhoeven to cut some footage from these two scenes or else receive an "X" rating. This vid only really shows one of these scenes. 1:53 - 2:01 wasn't in the theatrical R-rated release (Netflix might be showing both versions).
This is a great video with great music! I love this movie, I was very impressed when I watched it as a child and in these days it continues to be one of the greatest movies ever!
Usually...I hate it when people put together clips of a movie and put a track over it....usually it's such a huge mismatch, but this time....you did a real good job. This is awesome.
Excellent vid! Takes me back to the day my older brother aquired a dodgey VHS copy of this movie over 20 years ago. We watched it so much the tape perished. Probably because we used to frame step through the bit when toxic wasted Emil get's hit by the car - watch the head go flying! Anyone else do that? Or were we just wierd?
I read that the new robocop movie won't be a remake. But rather a continuation. It takes place in L.A. and the robocop program had been shut down, but now being re open. I hope that means they'll do with Peter Weller what they did with Arnold in T4 and Jeff bridges in tron and just graph his face onto Robocop with voice over. Robocop Rocked!
@saltyfoods I just read the whole Robocop project was dropped, along with a couple others because MGM couldn't afford it. If I remember right, there was even a Rocky remake in there too! Bleah!
@Sheinko This news makes me so happy. Hollywood needs to try harder to find new writers to come up with stories so they can take a vacation from making remakes of good movies.
Unfortunately, this is the only Robocop movie worth watching. 2 is ok... I guess. 3 and that awful mini-series made in Canada are complete wastes of time.
I saw the X rathed version a while back. Yes, it was pretty bloody, but I have seen far bloodier moves. What kills me is these days, a movie like that would only get an R rating, never an X rating. But god forbid someone lights a cigarette in a movie, instant R rating!....the message here is ultra-gore and nudity is okay, as long as no one smokes....I love this country....
@zephyroth6969 Yes, I would like to see some stats on how many kids have not taken up smoking because it's not in movies as much now. Prob not many. I don't get why people are so down on tobacco companies and not alcohol manufacturers. At least cigs don't cause someone to crash his car into someone else.
Sex and nudity isn't the only thing that can give a movie an X rating. Extreme gore and violence could also result in such a rating, which was the case for Robocop.
A long time ago a friend told me he seen a Xrated or NC17 version of robocop, i kinda didnt believe him, but it would be awesome if it was true cause robocop is one violently great movie.
. . . I don't even like AMVs, but you did a fucking brilliant job!
As a young kid, I loved these movies. This one in particular I watched the hell out of. And it's only now do I realize that even by today's standards, the first 2 Robocops were BRUTAL.
I swear in the original version when Clarence shoots Murphy in the head he says "time to put this baby to sleep" yet every version I've found he says "ok fun's over".
you also get a closeup of when bobby got shot in the leg during the road battle. in the x rated version it is a closeup and in the r rated it is as if you saw it from murphy's eyes
1. The drumbeat does sound like "When The Levee Breaks," but the riff is "Sweet Leaf" by Black Sabbath.
2. The blood and violence is mostly intact on the original theatrical version. Apparently, trimming a few seconds of suffering and/or mayhem makes the difference between an X and an R due to violence...
3. I must say, whoever put this video together did a great job. Very entertaining.
I bought the director's cut on Blu-Ray, and the scene where he gets all shot up is a LOT more bloody. In the original, one minute you see his right arm, and the next it's gone. In the Blu-Ray version, you actually see the whole shooting from start to finish with no cuts. You see his arm blown off and everything. The Blu-Ray version is the "X" version.
It's strange that you say that the full X-rated "Murphy's death scene" is only available on the director's cut edition.
Though everyone knows that the TV version was severely censured (as you too admit) the original theatrical version that contained all the blood and violence was plainly untouched when I bought the movie on VHS years ago.
No the Criterion DVD release and the new 2disc 20th century release along with the Blu-Ray versions are the X versions... also the Laser Disc version may also be X rated. I have the Criterion release that has this uncut scenes. Also the ED-209 scene in the begining is bloodier as well as the close up gun wound shotes
That was actually a very good video. I had nightmares about the part where they guy gets hit by the car after being deformed in the vat of chemicals. He sorts just liquefies. Yummy!!
