I read in People magazine in the 70s, a quote by Liza and it struck such a chord with me I have never forgotten it. Liza was performing, the crowd asked her to sing "Over the Rainbow"....and Liza paused, smiled, and said softly, "It's already been done." I've always liked that.
I believe she loved this song so because it always toke her back to when she made the Wizard of oz and I seen an interview with her on tv where she said that was the happiest time of her life R.I.P. Judy we still miss and love you <3
How about this: Judy Garland was an artist. She was dressed as a hobo, a classic symbol of misfortune . Why can't we assume that she was maintaining her character? We don't know what happened before she came out...not a hard stretch. Garland's moves here are those of one trying to understand her plight as a street person. The consummate artist. Knowing that Judy Garland was such a public figure, she could use that in her work. Nothing was beyond the grasp of this remarkable woman.
beautiful voice, with class and perfection that will never be able to be matched. she will always be my favorite...always and forever!!!!......every time I see a rainbow, I know she is smiling up above....
it is so endearing, sad and beautiful at the same time. The Wizard of OZ was a huge part of my life growing up. I was a kid in a convienance store and saw a magazine on the stand about movies and the four were on the cover, Tin Man, Scarecrow, Dorothy and the Lion and I thought she looked so pretty. Is it irony that she sings this song after how her life was. I am reading Wicked right now and this caused me to look up Wizard of OZ stuff and ran into this yesterday. D
I think this is incredible. wow. She was amazing. She reminds me of Michael Jackson in terms of being able to express raw emotion in her singing. This performance is just so good though. She is right up the top of the tree with artists like MJ.
Perfection ... There is something captured in this footage that is unique, or at least sets it apart from other, existing versions. Too moving even to watch in some respects! One cannot say it enough however ... Inimitable.
Thanks for the upload! Just a little correction, Judy also sand "Over the Rainbow" on the Mike Douglas Show in 1968 (which would make it 3 times). Also, I just wanted to say that although most people believe Judy had a very tragic life; she actually had a great life. Both Liza and Lorna have talked about countless of times how their mother lived a happy life, but that the public always had this vision of the poor little girl who never made it over the rainbow.
My GOD you guys that had her alive and singing for everyone is there anyone out there that seen her live I'd love to talk to you about that!! But please email me finding where I put this down is hard since there is so many of them on u tube!!BUT If you have had the pure JOY of seeing her when she was here on our earth PLEASE PLEASE email me pusspleaser134@aol.com my name is Barb...
Why Liza and Lorna don't want to sing this song? I've never heard it of them, I don't see it wrong. Only that since so many singers have covered it, the most entitled and could do when they want are her daughters. Isn't?
@Lealonna True, Liza should cover more of her mother's songs. She doesn't want to be compared to Judy though because when she was younger people kept treating her like she was trying to copy her mother and that annoyed her because she was trying to make herself a star by her own talent. Still, it'd be nice to hear her sing "Over The Rainbow" :)
@Lealonna Liza DID finally sing the closing lines from "Over the Rainbow" (beginning with an "If ..." after a lengthy pause towards the close of the number she had been performing, "Never Never Land"; that hint draws gasps of anticipation from the audience.) She then, just as she reaches the final line, interjects a belting "Thank you Mama!" before closing. It is included, live, on her 2002 album, "Liza's Back", throughout which she was in excellent form. It'll kill you every time your hear it!
@Lealonna Judy told Liza (when several people had been asking her to sing her mother's songs early in her career) Why be a second rate version of someone else? When you can be a first rate version of yourself. She wanted Liza to have her own sucess and "own" it. And also, Liza also realized and has even stated this "Somewhere Over the Rainbow".....thats her mother's song, and was very dear to her heart..........Liza respected that and still does.
@AntinousIsGod1 Yes, of course, but I see her singing this song and crying, and I'm ... :S Especially when she sings: "Why, oh, why can't I?" :( She would had happy times like everyone else, but what she spent was horrible. If not, then she would not have had so many problems, I think for that, she had bad luck.
Holy crap. My hear just melted. -3 and when she was heaving so was I.

I am so pleased this performance survived; this, by far, is my favorite performance by the late Judy Garland.
