I like that she sings the opening verse, including the trick of carrying over "you" which may have been anticipated by the composers. Overall, I'll take Ella to hear Jerome Kern, but Streisand does a good job delivering Oscar Hammerstein II.
Her voice just floats like air over and through this melody. Her interpretation of the lyric is so beautiful. Thank you, Ms. Stresiand. Thanks for this post.
My parents got a call from Enrico Banducci who ran the Hungry I in San Francisco.
"You gotta hear this nineteen year old girl" He Introduced her with "Ladies and Gentlemen enjoy this young lady 'cus she'll never play this crummy club again."
@MellowMrMike My parents saw her at the Hungry I in SF. Maybe it was that night, how knows? I remember them telling me about it whenever she appeared on the Ed Sullivan show.
Thanks for this upload. It reminds me my 3-years of a secret unforgettable love affair with a St. Paul Univeresity nun here in Tug.. I was broken hurter after she turns unfaithful and become a butterfly lover to another lover priest who works with her in the church choir and later they were caught in the act in bed in the priest rectory.
In the words of Alfred Lord Tennyson..." 'Tis better to have loved and lost than never to have loved at all." So count your blessings for the love you had.
Let me compliment you for your restraint in presenting this marvelous music without creating some crazy overly-animated video. There are some Barbra videos which seem like someone just learned how to create dissolves, spin-outs, cut-aways and so forth. Too much visual distraction, when what we really want is to LISTEN to the music. So, again, thanks for being so respectful of Barbra's exceptional talent.
Simply Streisand, came out the very same day her first christmas album was released,Columbia pushed the christmas album, and didnt seem to do anything for Simply Streisand, the public went wild over the christams album and forgot all about this one,Then came "What About Today"and the 60's were over,Her albums were always great but the 60's were music history for Barbra
@Northshoreman1 You are so well informed. Thanks for this history. The album is truly a gem (always felt this way about it) and it is a shame that Columbia Records did not the sense to promote it properly.
The best song ever written; not sure about the bossa nova arrangement, but at least she sings the verse and chorus, which kind of makes sense of the song.
wonder why we always gotta go race? vocals are vocals great as they both are and cocmaire said it musician actor. interpretations different voices exquisite. styling different but great. one mankind HUMAN!! please get over it.
@Northshoreman1 Yeah, I'm not sure why it didn't (and still doesn't seem to) get much hoopla. I am going chronologically through her discography, and I currently have found myself playing this one over and over again. Her voice is so buttery and rich in this period :)
Barbra is great, a very talented singer with a beautiful voice, but I agree with madgeic that Ella's version is better. Just an opinion, not to take away from the wonderful music of Barbra Streisand.
I love Barbara's music so much and this song is so beautiful, but the saddest part is that my Father loved her too and I lost him a little over a year ago, so I can either sit here and bawl my eyes out or just go ahead and listen to the most gorgeous voice, ever. I guess I'll do both.
this version is overworked...i'm talking about the sound management and maybe the arrangements....in other words...i consider it too artificial. and this comes from a person that favours barbra streisand.
Ella was great & I think d reason why some like her version better is that she sung it simply, w/ not much vocal flourish heard on Barbra's. Ella's is really pleasing. Still, u really can hear Barbra's IMMENSE talent; her slides thru varied notes is 2 behold!
But in another song both sung, Cry Me A River, Barbra seemed to be more "upfront" in the singing than Ella (who's known for scat)-- & surprisingly since she's not black, Barbra's version is MORE bluesy and emotional & thus more powerful!
@madgeic "since she's not black"?!?! Get out of here with that! Granted, there are different cultural norms pertaining to exposure of emotions, but Ella and Barbara are individual personalities in the public eye. They can't simply be categorized as a black woman and a white woman who would likely act according to stereotypes. They're both artists. Barbara is an actress first, and Ella is/was a musician first. That's why Barbara's performances seem more emotional... she's acting.
I think all the versions of this song are beautiful. It's just sweet. I wish love songs today were like this.
And besides, isn't the point of music to enjoy and appreciate the talent and emotion and expression of the artist? Why should it matter who was "better"? Different interpretations will speak to different people, That's not racism. That's individuality.
Lady Ella isnt comparable... Sorry but the only one who "amost" reached her was Sarah Vaughan. Try another singer to compare Barbra with. Still a Great version of "all the things you are". We need more talented people in this business like Barbra.
I am wondering why there is controversy here about Striesand and Fitzgerald...a great song and two great interpretations...the rest of the stuff about racism if you perfer one version over the other is just plain stupid.
LOL...a racist because I find Barbra Streisand more interesting? I love Ella. There's just something exotic about Barbra. Geez, relax! In 1987 I marched with 20,000 people in Forsyth County, Georgia to protest the KKK. I love everyone with a good heart regardless of religion, color, gender, sexual orientation, etc....people are people.
Ella is better at interpretation and rhythmic awareness and originality, (within the constrictions of her day in the Swing era). Barbra is/was a showtunes singer from a different era-not specifically a Jazz singer. It's a different mind-set, and thus, a different approach. I totally agree, there's much to be learned from both!
Much as I love Ella, this version is the one that truly knocks my socks off. Barbra's talent is so extraordinary...and this photograph is the one that for me most clearly demonstrates all her exotic beauty.
;rachelle ann go, a filipina singer has a great rendition of this song in her album entitled "Falling in Love."So please grap a copy.Every cent you spend on it won't give you any feeling of regret.
Let's give some credit to the great Jerome Kern. There are few composers in contemporary popular music who approach his talent. His The Way You Look Tonight is another standard.
