I read on CNN's website about a month ago that DELOREAN is talking about bringing back the Solstice! Honestly, and it looks pretty cool, not too many drastic changes from the original. Supposed to be next year or 2012. I have the a dark grey convertible Solstice and LOVE IT! I will never get rid of it. The sweetest ride I've even experienced. Really, really sweet.
I assume this is the Vauxell VX220 underneath, which is a Lotus Elise on the cheap. If so that'd be sweet. Either way GM needs to bring this thing back to the US as a Chevy or something because it is a damn good car for the price.
@guitardict This is not the Lotus Elise-based car. That's the Vauxhall V220 / Opel Speedster, this model is GM-built and is the same as the Opel GT. I drove this for a week, and while it's pretty quick, the short gears (as stated in the video) are a problem: my (heavier) Audi A5 with 80 hp less gets off the line faster.
This car was discontinued at the same time when Pontiac was (same goes for the Opel version). Still, it's a lot of fun, cheap for all the kit you get, and the roof is clever.

shitt!!! it's a fanstic car..I live in Italy..and here there aren't solstices!! noooooo..in the usa it costs only 20 000 dollars,and the gxp model cost only 30 000 dollars..like from 18 000 euro to 25 000 euroo..it's awesome ingiusticeee..here it would cost 40 000 or more euroo..noo!!
my 14 year old friend has a white one, but not the GXP. i find the car like really as a fun car its not for serious people. lol its his is sorta messed up :p
not a good way to say goodbye pontiac as much as i have enjoyed my Trans Am im shocked that they kinda didn't care for the solstice still the G8 is cool but they should have resurrected the Firebird one last time THAT was the way to go one final WS6!!!
Reminds me so much of the Pontiac Fiero, Economy Car, 2 Seater, very small car, very little space is given... But the Fiero never had a Convertible, or removable top (Unless you count the T-Top), was Mid-Engine, and was never Turbo-charged either.
GM is selling off Saturn and their German Opel division which also sells the Sky but under the Opel badge in Europe. When Pontiac shuts down in 2010, who gets the Solstice?
DMC bought the Solstice "rights". DMC has been looking for a new 2 seater car for a while, and since Pontiac has been down, and with John DeLorean (Founder of DMC and best known for his GTO, Firebird, and Le Mans/Tempest) once being Pontiacs greatest (and Youngest) GM president. Might as well save a bit of Pontiac.
If you want to buy a specific car, you mustn´t compare it to others because there will be always faster or better looking cars, you buy the car you like and the one you want. I have a Smart Roadster coupe and that´s the car I always wanted, it is horribly slow compared to other sport cars, but I don´t care, I wasn´t looking for a fast car, I was looking for a nice stylized and convertible car, and the Smart Roadster was the best for me and I bought it.

What's the use of having muscle car looks if your lacking true muscle car power. If it were up to me, I would drop a new Corvette 7.0LS engine up in that bitch!
turboi the S2000 and iut will take a SC v8 or a100000000000000000000000000 liter engine from GM to beat it cause we all know that american engineering is horrible. pontiac turbo = 5.5 seconds, S2000 N/A 2 liter 0-6- 5.5 seconds lmao imagine the S on steroids NO SHOT
@Ronnie51026 their is a new ssc that comes out this month that will beat the ssc and the venom gt can beat the veyron ss too so far they got the venom to 267 mph at 6600 rpm's still has another 600 rpms till it red lines at 7200 rpm's
@dankebuddha I know, but until then. The veyron ss can go 268, and the venom gt is a Hennessey which is a tuner version of a lotus, not a production car. the new ssc is featured in Top Gear October 2010 as the fastest but until it is produced the veyron is the fastest.
@Ronnie51026 their is nothing in common between a exige and a hennessy venom gt and they are being produced the first was delivered with 1200 hp to the middle east yes it is a production car this is hennessy's first attempt at a whole new car not a tunner car like the camaros and vipers and such and both cars will stomp a veyron around any track and the veyron did 267.58 mph official record
@dankebuddha The body is that of an exige and the gearbox from a ford gt. All kinds of things are exactly the same on it, such as the interior and body. Until they make it an original, it is still a tuner. The official record for the veyron is 267.81 mph, faster than the venom which is at 267 mph flat. Of course this is very close but the veyron has still kept its record.
@Ronnie51026 ya but they didn't redline the venom cause the first one sold is still a test car but win they get it the way they want it. the venom will be faster but i'm more interested in the new ssc
@dankebuddha Yeah, your probably right. until then the veyron. Can't wait until an ebook of the top gear magazine with the new ultimate aero is out on the net.
@dankebuddha yes true. but the corolla engine is actually rather good. the only good part of any toyota. The only reason lotus' are good is that they handle amazingly accelerate like lighting and have the best suspension you can get. Hennessey is the only company i have seen that steal the body off of other cars though.
@Ronnie51026 the only thing it has in common is the front fascia the car its extensively worked over and it is a entirely new car and for now it's alot cheaper way of making a new car then sinking millions into rnd for it
@dankebuddha If you compare an image of the venom and the exige. The bodies are exactly the same. The venom looks different in some pictures because the ingenious photography techniques.
@Ronnie51026 besides the tail lights the front fascia is the only untouched panel on the car then thats not counting the extra foot it was stretched to fit the v8 in
@dankebuddha So it was stretched. And the only touched panel is the front facade where another intake was added, the rest is exactly the same. Except for the self deploying spoiler.
@Ronnie51026 do you have any clue how to stretch a car every panel has to be reworked into a completely new part it's extremely difficult to stretch a car
@dankebuddha No its not. With todays technology all they needed to do was to take the 3d model of the exige then use the scale tool and move it on the y axis (most likely that axis). One foot would be about 12 units when calibrated correctly. Walla, its not like it used to be everything is much easier now.
@dankebuddha 2/3 of the body panels. The windows, chassis if shortened... You see when a tuner company takes the body of another car. Stretches it to fit the engine and changes all the other parts. It is still a tuner. Thats what they do with all the other ones. Not that many parts are left untouched.
@Ronnie51026 a tuner car would be like hennessey's 700 hpe camaro thats a tuner car this car if one off everything if it was a tuner car then why doesn't lotus have it's name in the tittle?
@dankebuddha Because Hennessey is arrogant and, that camaro has nearly no stock parts on it left on it (maybe a few bolts) just the camaro name (not even chevy) and hennessey.
@Ronnie51026 that hennessey camaro is a chevy block chevy heard and chevy bottom end only thing hennessey does to it is add a super charger and tune it even the suspension is chevy
@Ronnie51026 chevy makes the best engines in the world i can stack a chevy v8 against any other motor and it wins with reliability and they can easily make a ton of horse power with very few mods. ls motors can make over 1000 hp on a stock bottom end and be daily driven still getting 15+ mpg
@dankebuddha Have you ever seen a Brabus tuned engine? they made a BMW engine have 800 hp! by just rebuilding it and giving it a new exaust. 1000 hp? What are you talking about? The camaro ss only has 450 and the camaros only have 600 or so.
@Ronnie51026 yes i know of brabbus but you wanna start talking tuners cars we have the rest of the world beat hands down and like i said before the ls small blocks from chevy easily make 1000 hp on a stock bottom end the ls 1, ls 2, ls 3, ls6, ls 7, and ls 9 and chevy even offers a lsx block if you really wanna go fast the first one made they built it on 400 ci. twin turboed it with a set of production heads modified to flow more air and made 2000 hp with it and it still wasn't maxed out
@dankebuddha *sigh. Forgot about the ls blocks but, with that much power no chevy could handle it the Hennessey Camaro is already overpowered. But we Americans suck at cars, completely and utterly. Brabus will destroy any american tuner. They cost half a million to get to the physical limits of your car in every way and are worth it.
@Ronnie51026 actually brabus is over tuning those merc engins they have to much torque and do nothing but burn brake's with the abs just cause brabus cost more dont make them better and i just seen a comparo between the hpe camaro super snake mustang and speed shops challenger and the camaro stomps both of them in a straight and in a corner pulling a .9g for a muscle car thats impressive but even more impressive is the zr 1 which pulls a 1.10g on those hard ass all season tire's
That's right! It's just proven... The build quality, materials, engines, economy, everything is worse compared to what europe or japan has to offer. So in conclusion - YES! American cars really do suck, mainly because americans are stupid and lazy, they didn't have to bother about quality or longlife of their cars for decades, and now that time has come. Americans are most wasteful people on earth, i would be really happy if USA car industry would find it's end... Which it will.
American engineering is simplistic, but the base price of an S2000 is $35K, compared to the solstice gxp's price of $26K. and like U pointed out....same 0-60 time. Imagine the price of a turbo S2000. So is the engineering really that bad?
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
the bottomline is pontiac is still a GM. bottomline S2000 N/ais a better car then a solstice turbocharged, pathetic. they wonder why gm doesnt sell cars ... youd rather drive a solstice then a S2k ?
Why do they keep comparing it to a boxster? This car is a more sport for the money 350z/S2000 competitor...not a boxster competitor (which would be less sport for the money but more luxury). They need to leave that to the crossfire and audi TT.
I took a brazen orange gxp against a tuned eclipse gst last week. Solstice held it's own pretty well. Only has 54 miles on it, not even broken in yet.
I just bought myself a nice 2008 GXP. It's a mean machine, but I will upgrade it.
I'm adding a Hanns Intercooler (+40hp), a CAI(+9HP) and I'll reflash the ECM (with MadFlash*)(+32HP). These mods alone will get the car to around 340 HP and 350 lbs.f. of torque, and it won't cost me more than 1,600 bucks.
how much???

GM wouldn't allow it to have a LSx engine, bc then it would be faster than a corvette with a cheaper price tag. And that is a big No No for GM.

monkeyboy866 3 years ago
turboi the S2000 and iut will take a SC v8 or a100000000000000000000000000 liter engine from GM to beat it cause we all know that american engineering is horrible. pontiac turbo = 5.5 seconds, S2000 N/A 2 liter 0-6- 5.5 seconds lmao imagine the S on steroids NO SHOT

@Charmander6942 now its da hennessy venom gt
RnB123100 1 year ago
@Charmander6942 ssc aint the fastest anymore
babroncos11 1 year ago
@Charmander6942 nope second fastest, the bugatti veyron super sport is the fastest.
Ronnie51026 1 year ago
@Ronnie51026 their is a new ssc that comes out this month that will beat the ssc and the venom gt can beat the veyron ss too so far they got the venom to 267 mph at 6600 rpm's still has another 600 rpms till it red lines at 7200 rpm's
dankebuddha 1 year ago
@dankebuddha I know, but until then. The veyron ss can go 268, and the venom gt is a Hennessey which is a tuner version of a lotus, not a production car. the new ssc is featured in Top Gear October 2010 as the fastest but until it is produced the veyron is the fastest.
Ronnie51026 1 year ago
@Ronnie51026 their is nothing in common between a exige and a hennessy venom gt and they are being produced the first was delivered with 1200 hp to the middle east yes it is a production car this is hennessy's first attempt at a whole new car not a tunner car like the camaros and vipers and such and both cars will stomp a veyron around any track and the veyron did 267.58 mph official record
dankebuddha 1 year ago
@dankebuddha The body is that of an exige and the gearbox from a ford gt. All kinds of things are exactly the same on it, such as the interior and body. Until they make it an original, it is still a tuner. The official record for the veyron is 267.81 mph, faster than the venom which is at 267 mph flat. Of course this is very close but the veyron has still kept its record.
Ronnie51026 1 year ago
@Ronnie51026 ya but they didn't redline the venom cause the first one sold is still a test car but win they get it the way they want it. the venom will be faster but i'm more interested in the new ssc
dankebuddha 1 year ago
@dankebuddha Yeah, your probably right. until then the veyron. Can't wait until an ebook of the top gear magazine with the new ultimate aero is out on the net.
Ronnie51026 1 year ago
@Ronnie51026 but as far as using parts from other cars lotus has been using toyota engine's for years doesn't mean it's a corolla
dankebuddha 1 year ago
@dankebuddha yes true. but the corolla engine is actually rather good. the only good part of any toyota. The only reason lotus' are good is that they handle amazingly accelerate like lighting and have the best suspension you can get. Hennessey is the only company i have seen that steal the body off of other cars though.
Ronnie51026 1 year ago
@Ronnie51026 the only thing it has in common is the front fascia the car its extensively worked over and it is a entirely new car and for now it's alot cheaper way of making a new car then sinking millions into rnd for it
dankebuddha 1 year ago
@dankebuddha If you compare an image of the venom and the exige. The bodies are exactly the same. The venom looks different in some pictures because the ingenious photography techniques.
Ronnie51026 1 year ago
@Ronnie51026 besides the tail lights the front fascia is the only untouched panel on the car then thats not counting the extra foot it was stretched to fit the v8 in
dankebuddha 1 year ago
@dankebuddha So it was stretched. And the only touched panel is the front facade where another intake was added, the rest is exactly the same. Except for the self deploying spoiler.
Ronnie51026 1 year ago
@Ronnie51026 do you have any clue how to stretch a car every panel has to be reworked into a completely new part it's extremely difficult to stretch a car
dankebuddha 1 year ago
@dankebuddha No its not. With todays technology all they needed to do was to take the 3d model of the exige then use the scale tool and move it on the y axis (most likely that axis). One foot would be about 12 units when calibrated correctly. Walla, its not like it used to be everything is much easier now.
Ronnie51026 1 year ago
@Ronnie51026 the idea is easy i mean the actual act of cutting a car in half and getting it back to 1 with no structural integrity loss
dankebuddha 1 year ago
@dankebuddha You realize once the model is made the parts are sent to whatever tool makes them in Hennessey whether it be cnc cutting or molding.
Ronnie51026 1 year ago
@Ronnie51026 hennessey gets the car as a whole rolling chassis with no motor or trans then they cut it in half
dankebuddha 1 year ago
@dankebuddha What do you work there? Because those are some old school methods. yet, proves my point more that they take an exige and tune it.
Ronnie51026 1 year ago
@Ronnie51026 then i'd love for you to name me any parts inter changeable between a exige and a venom gt
dankebuddha 1 year ago
@dankebuddha 2/3 of the body panels. The windows, chassis if shortened... You see when a tuner company takes the body of another car. Stretches it to fit the engine and changes all the other parts. It is still a tuner. Thats what they do with all the other ones. Not that many parts are left untouched.
Ronnie51026 1 year ago
@Ronnie51026 a tuner car would be like hennessey's 700 hpe camaro thats a tuner car this car if one off everything if it was a tuner car then why doesn't lotus have it's name in the tittle?
dankebuddha 1 year ago
@dankebuddha Because Hennessey is arrogant and, that camaro has nearly no stock parts on it left on it (maybe a few bolts) just the camaro name (not even chevy) and hennessey.
Ronnie51026 1 year ago
@Ronnie51026 that hennessey camaro is a chevy block chevy heard and chevy bottom end only thing hennessey does to it is add a super charger and tune it even the suspension is chevy
dankebuddha 1 year ago
@dankebuddha Wow, then they are the ONLY tuner that does that. Every other one makes them as good as possible by changing all the parts. Hm.
Ronnie51026 1 year ago
@Ronnie51026 chevy makes the best engines in the world i can stack a chevy v8 against any other motor and it wins with reliability and they can easily make a ton of horse power with very few mods. ls motors can make over 1000 hp on a stock bottom end and be daily driven still getting 15+ mpg
dankebuddha 1 year ago
@dankebuddha Have you ever seen a Brabus tuned engine? they made a BMW engine have 800 hp! by just rebuilding it and giving it a new exaust. 1000 hp? What are you talking about? The camaro ss only has 450 and the camaros only have 600 or so.
Ronnie51026 1 year ago
@Ronnie51026 yes i know of brabbus but you wanna start talking tuners cars we have the rest of the world beat hands down and like i said before the ls small blocks from chevy easily make 1000 hp on a stock bottom end the ls 1, ls 2, ls 3, ls6, ls 7, and ls 9 and chevy even offers a lsx block if you really wanna go fast the first one made they built it on 400 ci. twin turboed it with a set of production heads modified to flow more air and made 2000 hp with it and it still wasn't maxed out
dankebuddha 1 year ago
@dankebuddha *sigh. Forgot about the ls blocks but, with that much power no chevy could handle it the Hennessey Camaro is already overpowered. But we Americans suck at cars, completely and utterly. Brabus will destroy any american tuner. They cost half a million to get to the physical limits of your car in every way and are worth it.
Ronnie51026 1 year ago
@Ronnie51026 actually brabus is over tuning those merc engins they have to much torque and do nothing but burn brake's with the abs just cause brabus cost more dont make them better and i just seen a comparo between the hpe camaro super snake mustang and speed shops challenger and the camaro stomps both of them in a straight and in a corner pulling a .9g for a muscle car thats impressive but even more impressive is the zr 1 which pulls a 1.10g on those hard ass all season tire's
dankebuddha 1 year ago
@dankebuddha the mercedes they do aren't as good as all the others. Thier BMWs and Lambos shine.
Ronnie51026 1 year ago
That's right! It's just proven... The build quality, materials, engines, economy, everything is worse compared to what europe or japan has to offer. So in conclusion - YES! American cars really do suck, mainly because americans are stupid and lazy, they didn't have to bother about quality or longlife of their cars for decades, and now that time has come. Americans are most wasteful people on earth, i would be really happy if USA car industry would find it's end... Which it will.
v8kozik 3 years ago
American engineering is simplistic, but the base price of an S2000 is $35K, compared to the solstice gxp's price of $26K. and like U pointed out....same 0-60 time. Imagine the price of a turbo S2000. So is the engineering really that bad?

the bottomline is pontiac is still a GM. bottomline S2000 N/ais a better car then a solstice turbocharged, pathetic. they wonder why gm doesnt sell cars ... youd rather drive a solstice then a S2k ?

I prefer the Solstice (especialy the GXP). But both are awesome rides.
sebast007 3 years ago
Sky. In my opinion its better looking.
myhalo123 3 years ago
Agree, but think 10 years from now. the solstice will be a classic looking car and the sat will look like an old mr2 does today.

I got me ONE. It's a 2008 GXP turbo. I really enjoy driving it. I picked the 'Yellow' with Black theme. I feel about 10 years younger. :}
I've had people come over to my Solstice and tell me ' What a Beautiful Car.
tcjsr 3 years ago
Why do they keep comparing it to a boxster? This car is a more sport for the money 350z/S2000 competitor...not a boxster competitor (which would be less sport for the money but more luxury). They need to leave that to the crossfire and audi TT.

I took a brazen orange gxp against a tuned eclipse gst last week. Solstice held it's own pretty well. Only has 54 miles on it, not even broken in yet.
Connal84 3 years ago
I just bought myself a nice 2008 GXP. It's a mean machine, but I will upgrade it.
I'm adding a Hanns Intercooler (+40hp), a CAI(+9HP) and I'll reflash the ECM (with MadFlash*)(+32HP). These mods alone will get the car to around 340 HP and 350 lbs.f. of torque, and it won't cost me more than 1,600 bucks.
sebast007 3 years ago
Good for you.
myhalo123 3 years ago
can the chasis handle the extra power?
evans4you 3 years ago
Yes it can. The car is built up on a solid frame (similar to a Corvette). I'm also adding a tension bar (re-bar from kappa).
