This is irritating about Safin, he was sooo good and had sooo much talent, beating Federer like this at the Australian Open and beating Sampras at the U.S. Open in 2000...who else can say that they have beaten both Sampras and Federer at a Grand Slam? Yet he only won 2 majors and should have won sooo many more.
@Amar283 No doubt he should and could have won more, but the reality is he was injured too often and when he was in his prime or close to it. He was injured in 2001 and 2003 (he pulled out of AO and missed all the following 3 slams that year) and after he won Australia in 2005, he injured his knee in the spring time on hardcourts in the US. He was never the same player after that. He said in interviews that it took him three years to finally not feel any pain in the knee.
SF against Roger was one of the best matches I have ever watched! Not just cause Marat won, but it was match full of Marat's incredible charisma, nervousness,.... Safin is really unique and I miss him so much on the tour!
@Leonardo4190 If you mean in terms of overall majors, yes. Murray has lost two. Safin did win his first slam final, in 2000, but then lost two finals at Australia in 2002 and 2004 before winning in 2005, if you mean that it took Safin three tries to win in Australia, you would be right, but this was his fourth final, and he won his first Australian open and second overall slam. Murray has made the USO final in 2008 and AO final in 2010!
Courier is such a sexy gay boy. He always manages to fawn over the cute players and I can't believe he actually finagled a hug out of Marat. Very sneaky and I'm so jealous!
and he just LOVED getting that hug from marat at 2:20...i am SO jealous. i bet he came in his pants. but i like courier, so i don't think he's that much of a moron. et en plus il parle très bien français.
Because it was the Australian Open, and played in January, this match is overlooked as one of the best ever played!! This match actually had more games played (63) then the epic the other day with Nadal and Federer (62). "Both players" had to save match points which actually did not happen in the epic Borg/MaCenroe and Nadal/Federer finals. Also, by far the best Samprass/Agassi match was played down under!
Wow CLASS ACT, Marat was really good in this interview. But even more importantly, how good was that match! the lob on Federer's match point in the fourth was brilliance from Marat. I always have felt he could be the best in the world if he only wanted it a bit more (focused more on tennis)
haaaaaaaaa, lolz Marat is fucking hilarious. I think every time he gives one of these Aussie Opens he mentions that its late and night or its already 12 oclock and people are still up. What does he think the whole country is on a 12 oclock curfew?
Well he got a knee injury in the clay season shortly after this and played through it, made it worse and it finally went which left him with chronic tendinitis and now he can't move.
He has had huge problems since 2005 soon after this since the clay season due to his knee injury, this year he is moving much better (self admittadly), he claims this is the first year he is playing without pain since 2005, he isn't moving as well as he used to but it is a hell of a lot better than last year, I'm really pleased for him, you obviously dont watch tennis often anyway, the only reason you commented back is cause he is in the semis, you never watched him the last couple years, did you?
Yeah...that`s right..and is sad that only two players can win today the grandslams finals....I think that Marat is the only one that can break this ....I know that he can`t play his best tennis right now but I`m confide in his talent....because he did it in 2004...when he rich the final after a vey difficult period of his carrer...
Oh I see. So with only having a wrist injury back then, it wasn't as bad because his movement wasn't affected. I hope he continues winning. I feel like sooner or later he'll starting being more consistent and his injury will clear up and get better at least.
What a match! Beautiful! One of the best and excelent matches I`ve ever seen! This 2 guys are so talented, both of them are equally talented, but Marat has a minus with the mental part unfortunaly, and I think this thing is very anoying for his fans! For me it is, but he`s amusing me a lot!2 great guys! I hope we will see them in another semifinal or final! Their matches are always full of suspense and great shots! Beautiful once again!
the best match i've ever seen too,and i feel really sorry for safin as he hasn't played his best game or he still can't control his emotion in most of the key games,he is better than most of the top ten players,if he plays his A game, he can beat everybody.
It was the best match I've ever seen. I'll tell my kids about this one. But the most satisfying match I've seen this match play was the ass kicking he gave Sampras in the US Open final 2000.
one thing i like about marat is his humor! love youuu!!!!!

I kind of thought that the match Safin just played vs Federer in the Ozzy Open 09 could not live up to this.
.. Safin's passion is gone. If he doesn't believe that he can win, how is he going to win?
EricTheRed03 3 years ago
you obviously dont know how marat had a serious injury in 05 and hasnt been the same since, it has got nothing to do with passion.
SoooBlue 2 years ago 10
It's not the passion, you idiot, he got injured soon after this and has been a shadow of his former self.

Don't know why you got thumbs down for that, in 98, Marat bagelled him in the first set to lose in 5, but he crushed him a year later in Paris.

And that's saying a lot. Safin should be Top 10 right now. I'm mad at him for that, but the ball's in his court. He decides what he can do.
