All kids want to do is have fun :) & i think it should be THERE decision what toys they play w/ not their parents or the media. This is 2012, theres nothing wrong w/ a bunch of kids playing doll house, hot wheels, dress up, building things w/ legos & then tearing them apart. Instead of certain toys being aimed at both genders, why cant boys & girls be encouraged to play with more than what is typically made for them? they might like playing with toys that are different than what there used to?
When I was a kid, my parents didnt push anykind of toy on me, especially ones that were aimed at girls. I never played w/ barbie dolls because i thought they were stupid, unless my little cousin came over b/c she would get mad & cry if i didnt play with her lol. I mostly played with stuffed animals because i love animals, and i played with the hot wheels & legos, etc. because i found those things more interesting then some barbie doll or doll house & pink is NOT my favorite color. anyone else?
Kickinback, it does not matter if "her words are a mirror of what she has been told", I beleive her. Are all toys for children really that black and white? If boys wants to play with toys that are aimed at girls, and if girls want to play with toys that are aimed at boys then that's ok with me. The color pink is overated though, the majority of things that are for boys are blue, red, black, etc. while girls are just stuck with the color pink,ugh..wish they would change it up a little, this is 2012.
But technically everyone, old or young, just repeats what they are told in some way. Our opinions are basically formed in relation to taking a side on something(best example is republican or democrat.) That being said children may not be as mentally developed as adults but at the same time we don't suddenly get a personality at 18. Just because my mom hated dolls as a child doesn't mean I didn't like them, I liked boys toys as well and would get mad when I could only play with girly stuff.
Oh for crying out loud she's a 5 yr old with an opinion. Unfortunately given dear old dad is video taping the rant it only proves this little apple apparently didn't fall far from the tree and is only repeating what she has heard and how she's been coached. Gender roles? Who cares? Like it or not girls and boys are different (biology class, folks).
Right on sweertie! I've been sayiong this for YEARS!!!!!!! We condition our kids from the crib...pink for girls, blue for boys...football for girls...ironing board for girls. More and more girls are saying this. Finally thgey're being heard!
This makes me think of reading books in jr high and high school. We were required to read Jane Eyre, I know why the Caged Birds Sing, Flowers for Algernon...basically books that sucked for guy's, but we had to ready them. But when there was Lords of Disipline, Lord of the Flies, or Farenhight 454...everyone read those books and there was actual discussion.
I don't really think it seems that she has been "trained" at all. She is talking too fast and going on a real rant LOL. Also of course she was looking at her family on the other CNN video (I saw it too) She is like 3 years old, was probably scared to death. The first time she is just talking to her dad, much more comfortable to be herself. It's so cute! LOL
HER MOM TOLD HER TO SAY THIS!!! She is not some brave, smart, or outspoken little girl. Mom said, "Ready sweetie? Aaaaaand ACTION!" before beginning to film. Don't be sheep...
CNN did an interview with her today, every time a question was asked she had to look in a different direction before she could reply. It really irks the hell out of me how people use their kids for media attention.
While children this age are perfectly capable of holding opinions like this, this definitely isn't the way children this age speak and think. It sounds like she is parroting a speech given by a parent.
Most people here are WRONG on thinking a child this age cannot form their own opinions and voice them. I have seen it done many times. When I had my older niece one summer when she was 5 I took her to a game park which had rides, go-karts, batting cages ect. I let her go where she wanted and her curiosity lead her to all the"boy" themed things all day long. After she explained how much she liked specific things over others and ranted about "girlie" rides and games in a very detailed rant.
My god it is not some giant global conspiracy. Toy companies make toys that way because the majority of girls or boys want those kind of toys. If they didn't then the Toy companies wouldn't make those toys "pink for girls" and "blue for boys". Its nice to "dream" a child could independently think that way but children do not think like that. What she is saying she probably learned from her parents. Human brains do not develop the ability to think complex thoughts until much later in life.
@jcn35 Totally disagree with you. I have two nieces, one this young the other 11, that think and talk and form their own opinions independently from their parents. My younger niece put on a display very similar to this just last month and ranted about why she can't have "boy" toys. Some children develop faster mentally.
@TheUSMetalhead Considering children are well children and are not at the "age of reason". At best they can make observations about the real world such as boy toys vs girl toys but that is it the thoughts do not go deeper. Your nieces may show an observation or two once and a while but you know they do not think like adults yet.
@jcn35 Fortunately, not all children fall into the trap of thinking like so-called adults like you, adults who reason that beating or shooting someone to death over the smallest amount of money or minor disagreement is a worthy activity, adults who rape women and children, crooks conning each other day and night. Riley's reasoning supercedes yours by light years. When, not if, we have children participating in the decision-making of so-called adults, the world will be a better place for all.
@libertyqueen Maybe myself being an engineer shouldn't comment on physiology of a child bc that is not my field(only took 2 psychology classes). I can't even begin to imagine the screwed up life you have that you magically jump to rape, murder. Just because you throw up such words doesn't make you correct or will shut other people up. I think you where trying to make an point or where you just trying to personally attack me. You are the one that needs to grow up.
@jcn35 You have the typical 'adult' problem of erroneously thinking you are superior to children when such is not the case. Children are much wiser and infinitely more intelligent than so-called 'adults' like you until they get around 'adults' like you who spend copious amounts of time negatively programming them to parrot your twisted version of reality. The fact is, children are raped and murdered by 'adults' who have an over-inflated sense of superiority and entitlement. Get over yourself.
When I was a child (four and on), my favorite toys in the world were "boy toys," despite owning owning mostly "girl toys" which my parents bought. The toy companies aren't at fault for producing the toys, just for so clearly targeting sexes in commercials, on boxing, and in the toys' sexes themselves.
kickinbackinOC - why would you assume that she didn't think of it on her own? According to my parents, i was one insanely outspoken kid at a VERY young age (younger than Riley here).
@severzero I don't think it's some kind of manipulated reaction that the girl is having. That's quite a cynical view if you automatically assume that's what's going on. Even if it is, who cares? It's just a girl talking about something. At least it's not some stupid video of the Kardashians or the Jersey Shore cast talking about something.
Girls can buy the girl toys or the boy toys, and the same with boys. Also, toy companies do make toys that either gender can use.. What is her problem?
Sounds like she is probably quite outspoken in her home and is not disciplined. I think she needs an attitude adjustment.
@leese1950 No, she does have a point. It's not a 'lack of discipline'. Little boys and girls in today's society are looked at as if they don't have a mind of their own. Seriously, how many little girls do you know that do NOT have pink toys, plastic kitchenware, barbie dolls and what BOY for that matter do you not know with action figures, toy weapons, trucks and remote control cars? That's the problem with people with your way of thinking. This is America right? Land of the 'FREE'?
@IThinkItsEdTv I respect your opinion, however children are usually guided by their parents, and I doubt that MOST parents would choose action figures for their girls and Princesses for their boys. When the children become older than toddlers than they can express what they want for toys. It's not the toy companies' fault. I do think it is obvious that this little girl is not disciplined and is probably the boss in her home, and her parents think it is cute.
Funny how she kind of falters when it comes to presenting the converse argument: that some little boys like princesses too. It just gets stuck in her throat a bit, like she's just less sure about it. There's still social pressure working on her free thinking mind.
I love her rant overall. I wish she's run for congress. I'd drag my knuckles to the voting booth and pull the level for her.
I always felt this way as a child and my parents didn't encourage it. To this day, my mother asks me why I don't "behave" like a girl (by putting on make-up, buying expensive skanky clothes and trout around brand-name purses). I never liked princess dolls, as much as I was told that I "should" - I liked legos, my NES, watching saturday morning cartoons like Bill Nye and earthworm jim.
Could be staged, or she could be parroting the parents. Whatever it is, tis true. And I always have a 'cam' handy, it is called a cell phone, and it takes videos!
Way to go kid! My parents have photos of me in my pink Easter dress playing with a hot wheels truck. I enjoyed playing with my brothers toys as much as I liked my own!
For the record, I'm not sexist and I can agree to a certain extent that toy companies do play a part in programming children for gender roles. That's why children have parents. You no like, you no buy!
@libertyqueen The word is spelled "automaton" and it already means robot. Your repetition reveals your true ignorance. Stop trying to act so "grown up", little girl. Back to your Barbies and Kitchen sets.
@ayalapd : Nitpicking @libertyqueen's use of grammar is not a convincing argument that LQ is wrong. However, telling someone you assume is a woman to "get back in the kitchen" is a very convincing argument that LQ is right (especially about you being a sexist knuckle-dragging moron).
@ayalapd My flyin' fingers type really fast so please excuse the typo. However, my use of the phrase "automoton [sic] robots" for the likes of knuckle-dragging dildoheads like you is entirely and grammatically correct. I used 'automaton' as an adjective descriptive of the noun 'robot'. I could just as well have said 'robotic automaton'. An automaton is a 'self-operating machine' which can be, but is not always, a robot. In any event, junior, you can Kiss the Ground I Walk On. ROGLMFAO!!!!
I can't even understand most of what she is saying. But yea..she is just repeating what she has been told. That is pretty clear! The toy companies put in millions on research on what children do like and that is how they come up with the toys they do.
Riley is telling the truth. Like her, at the very young age of 7, I knew that girls and women were held to a higher double-standard males and asked my mother why I wasn't allowed to say s**t and she responded me: "Because you are a girl". Those of you who think Riley is brainwashed are full of crap... you are the pathetic misogynist automoton robots who are brainwashed. Riley is a free thinker and infinitely more enlightened than you sexist knuckle-dragging morons could ever hope to be.
You can tell by the precision of the content, the clear scope of the "opinion", and the unvarying, black-and-white repetitiveness of it, that she is parroting something she has been told by an adult. She even portrays irritation not comensurate with a 5 year old. When she inquires of her father: "Right?", dad predictably answers "Right". It's all too mechanical, and it's obvious that her words are a mirror of what she has been told.
@kickinbackinOC Just like all children's 'opinions' are. There are very few kids that form any type of social opinion by themselves at that age. It's the same reason kids grow up to become religious, it's nothing they're born with it's something they learn from their parents/peers.
It doesn't really matter in the long run either, what she is saying is very true.
@kickinbackinOC I don't know about you, but I'd rather her father teach her that she ought to play with whatever she wants than teach her that she's "supposed" to play with dolls and cooking sets.
@kickinbackinOC So what you're saying is kids are too dumb to form their own opinions? She might have gotten her vocabulary from her parents way of talking but she seems pretty passionate about what she's trying to prove. How do you know her parents feel the same way? Her father might just being saying right just to make her happy he's probably not even taking her seriously just like you saying she's "mirroring". I think kid's opinions should at least be considered something valid.
@kickinbackinOC LMAO if you think that is scripted/mechanical and has a "precise, clear scope" you really need to go back to gradeschool or seek medication for whatever disorder is causing a clear inability to read social cues. It's a little kid talking through little kid eyes about actual issues that you are scared of, so it must be some scripted conspiracy!
Girls and boys are different, but not as different as the toy aisles try to make them.
My mom tried to keep my toys gender neutral. It didn't make me not want to play with dolls, or my brother want to.
But... the color pink makes me want to barf BECAUSE it is the color of everything someone is trying to make girls be. It gives me the creeps, always has.
That little girl is reacting to something real. It's not Marxist, or socialist or gay.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Poor little thing. Political correctness in the new Marxist Obama America has destroyed this young girl's childhood. Who in the hell is filling her brain with all this Communist propaganda?
I used to stock toys at a retail store. Always noticed that we train children from an early age to be what we design them for. Girls toys are: Miniature shopping carts, play kitchens, all sorts of babies that need mothering. Boy toys are: Construction working tractors and military action figures. Just past the fantasy there is an agenda of gender assignment. These kids don't come out of the womb liking this stuff. They're taught to like it through mental conditioning.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Well little girl most boys don't want to play with dolls and most little girls don't want to play with action figures so if you wanna buy a action figure just go to the boys section and buy a action figure you dumb hoe.

So buy a superhero and shut up you brat - while the SATANIC NWO continues to CONFUSE GENDER ROLES to DESTROY the FAMILY - so the BASIC UNIT of LIFE - FAMILY - can't stand up to CONFRONT A CORRUPT GOVT!
@2JOHNNYT Back into your mother's basement. This has nothing to do with the "NWO" or an attempt to "destroy families". This girl is responding to gender-exploitive marketing. You're not "in the know" because you flipped on Alex Jones & watched Zeitgeist. Everything ain't a conspiracy. In fact, most things in this country are simply means of making a few dollars. If anything, you're mad that you're not making a few dollars. You're too busy writing your name on orange juice.

@kickinbackinOC Does it make a difference, when what she has been told is absolutely true?
