Liked and Subbed. Great Review! Probably going to buy this phone. Just one question, do you need a data package to use the internet even if you're in range of a wireless modem?
@sandyboom1001 Hi! If you are subscribed to a 30-day feature (like 100MB or something) then yes, browsing will work even if voice won't because you paid for that feature. IF however, you are not subscribed to a feature, then nothing will work when you run out of airtime/money. Cheers!
@VEIlucaspires Hi! Depending on your service provider, you may need a data package to allow this. However, web browsing should still work without a package, charging you on a PPU (pay-per-use) basis.
@dmm27psab Hi! This depends on which carrier you purchase it from. Typically, North American carriers have a greater tendency to lock their devices. In this case, from Telus, the device is locked. Cheers!
Can you change the icons on the home screens? For example have a picture in the background instead of having the large icons covering the entire screen? You also mentioned regretting using a blackberry charger, I currently have the Motorola Charm and the input for my charger is so broken, have to tape my charger in, could this be because of the bb charger?
The only downside of this phone is that you cant customize/personalize your message tone! well I've tried many times and I couldn't, someone let me know if its possible! thanks =]
@nutris you can change the tone when you receive calls and messages. It took me some time to do this. You go to your profile (on the pull down menu) and choose General profile then tap the 3 bars icon and then choose Customize. That will give you a menu of tones to choose from as well as volume. Good luck!
Please tell me if you recommend this phone, i am used to android smartphone that broke yesterday. I am planning on buying a cheap prepaid phone for now.
07:40 "explode the phone" jajajaja esperemos que no explote al entrar a la version desktop xD gracias, it was a great review as all the ones you did. Specially Xperia Ray.
@rawr6127 Absolutely! First you need a microSD memory card to insert behind the phone. Then setup the camera to save images to the card and take/save a picture (this forces the phone to properly format the memory card). Access the memory card using a computer (either a USB cable or SD adapter) and copy your WAV/MP3 files to the "Music" folder. If the folder doesn't exist, create it in the same section where the "Photos/Pictures" folder is. Enjoy!
this is a prepaid phone as in buying those pre paid cards at stores? thanks cus i called my local telus kiosk and they said you cant make a smart phone prepaid
@l3joint Hello! That's not actually the letter "H", but a picture of a music symbol (note) with waves to the left and right of it, indicating that the phone is set to "Ring and Vibrate". However, if I had a SIM card in the phone and there was signal, then an "H" would appear, indicating that the phone is connected to the HSPA (High-Speed Packet Access) network.
I received this phone for Christmas and had a question about battery life. I charged it less than 24 hrs ago, and it ran out of power by the morning. I was not using it, left it on the counter- am I forgetting to turn something off? I believe it was in 'sleep mode' as you would need to touch the top button to 'wake it up' to use it. What should the battery life be on this phone when in sleep mode?
I ended up getting this phone for christmas! really satisfied with it :) although yesterday i had to get both a new SIM card and exchange for another Motokey Social because it kept saying "SIM is blocked," rather annoying but it's working now! :)
Also, can you only see your "wallpaper homepage" when you turn on the phone? (stupid question I know! but i'm just curious! lol)
bought this for my dad who upgraded since all he does is text and check facebook. I was pretty impressed given the $90 no contract price. Great keyboard for a non blackberry phone, opera browser, and nice small features like wifi, mobile hotspot, rss feeds, responsive touch screen, and push email. My only gripe with this is the gmail and twitter widgets are just shortcuts to the mobile webpages for each and the gmail site doesn't work and you cant update twitter status on the opera browser
Hi,i just got the phone, and i'm having some troubles. maybe you can help?
if i go to the browser i can log onto facebook with no problem, BUT the actual facebook key wont let my sign in it just says " please wait" for a REALLY long time, and then says " connection error" my wifi is always working fine ( as far as i can tell ) so any help ? also, when i'm on the internet i can see everything, but i can't insert text, for example, if i'm on twitter, i can't tweet, the text box wont let me.HELP!?
Hello, I found the review helpful. As the cell has no android, there is a special application, or there are good applications that could be used in this phone?
@erickverli Hi! The MotoKey Social has proprietary software running on it. As such, finding apps specifically tailored to it will be very difficult (if at all possible). The phone was designed in such a way for it to have as low a price point as possible. I would look at purchasing this phone for what it offers rather than for app/game support. Cheers!
was that a MTK processor cos ive seen those in shenzai phones before and i know they're real cheap..also the most common MTK processor is a media tek MTK6516 460MHz+280MHz
i suspect this would haave to be te real spec...such a nerd
I got this phone as a gift for someone but it turned out to be a total waste of money unfortunately :( It's good for sending text messages and that's about it! The wifi does not connect at all and the only thing that shows up on the screen is a Network Problem. Telus was absolutely no help whatsoever either as they said you cannot use the wifi unless it's on a "real" plan not Pay-and-Talk. Absolute poop! Threw the phone out as Telus would not take it back and bought a Blackberry as a gift!
@jennifervanbeaver Whoa, that's very strange. I used WiFi on this device during the video review and I did not have a SIM card in the phone at all. Unfortunately the person you spoke to probably a potato head. If the WiFi does not connect, it may either be due to incorrect settings, low WiFi reception, or the phone might be defective. Hopefully the BlackBerry leads you to greener pastures, haha! Cheers.
@AndrewShaw23 Hi, and great question! It is made of hard rubber, unlike BlackBerries for example that traditionally use hard plastic for their keys. Cheers!
I got a slightly different version Motorola EX119 as a gift for my mom. I was trying to tell the main differences between the two, but they are physically the same, except fb button on this one is only home, and this one has 2 sim capability. I don't know if software will be a different version though. Thanks, nice review.
I'm looking at getting this phone for my mom, Android will confuse her, & price is important, she requires a keyboard for texting and probably will not use any other function except email at home on wifi. Does this phone come with wifi unlocked & is the keypad backlit? Also, how safe is the swipe pad lock? she let's phones bounce in her purse with no regard! LOL
@vaughanweather Hi! I don't know what you mean by "WiFi Unlocked", but it does have WiFi connectivity if that's what you mean (so she can use apps like YouTube and the Browser without being charged). Yes, the keypad is backlit and can be used in total darkness. The power-button (at the top) of the phone needs to be pressed once to turn-on the screen, and then only a human finger can swipe to unlock. Inanimate objects will not unlock the screen. Cheers!
@WirelessInsider thanks, I know Telus/Bell/Rogers have a history of crippling wifi (broadcom wifi chip is present but disabled in the software) on the cheaper phones such as this one. Glad to hear that is not the case!
Have you had a chance to actually test the phone/battery in a real world environment? Is the stand-bye time close to the 600hrs it's rated for and how about the 8hrs of talk time?
Thanks, this review and feedback is highly appreciated!!!
@hemendrabhardwaj Hi! Well out of the three, the (little weird looking) Micromax A60 runs Android (2.1) so if that's something you're looking for, then right-on. The MotoKey and Samsung Corby 2 run their own software. However, the MotoKey is the only one out of those three that has a QWERTY keyboard...and heavy Facebook integration. If socializing is what you want to do, then the MotoKey for sure. It's designed for that kinda thing (plus texting on those other guys would be kinda tough). Cheers!
@WirelessInsider thank you very much for quick reply and a great review.i am a little doubtful about durability of micromax and its battery? plus are enough apps available for other two? i am interested in using apps having capabilities of mail for exchange(esp. the calender ),snaptu, nimbuzz, wattpad, opera mobile, symtorrent. not much interested in games.can you suggest me any other within 100$?
@hemendrabhardwaj You're welcome! Personally, I would prefer to stick with devices manufactured from a well-known company (e.g. Motorola) however, based on your needs, it looks like an Android-based device would be best (like the Micromax) HOWEVER, keep in mind that if you text a lot, and there is no keyboard, prepare for a hard time with those other guys. Unfortunately, I cannot recommend anything, because my (Canadian) and your markets are different. Cheers!
Great review! I'm considering buying this :) In your opinion, would you get this phone or the LG Optimus One that came out last year? I've heard mixed reviews for the Optimus One both online and from my friends so I'm not quite sure! Again, great review! :)
@ShaelynTai Hello, and thank you! Both the MotoKey Social and LG Optimus One are introductory-level devices...but with one key difference. The LG runs Android. This opens-up the capabilities of what the phone can do for you. The MotoKey Social is a very simple, pre-designed phone with very little compared to Google Android devices. The LG Optimus One has an okay camera and 600MHz processor...nice and simple. If you can, consider the LG Optimus Black. My experience with it was very good! Cheers.
@Sonic6293 Hi! (1) Yes it would, since both Telus here in Canada and AT&T in the USA both use the 850/1900MHz HSPA frequencies for their 3G+ networks. (2) WiFi will always connect first over 3G, as long as you are within range and have the connection saved. (3) That's a tricky one...every carrier in Canada locks their phones (with the exception of the odd 10% of hardware). I would checkout eBay or other sources for unlocking services once the phone becomes more popular.
i quite like how its tethered to facebook so much. it cancels out how ugly it is. anyway, i hav a question (and it might be a stupid question) but if i use facebook on that phone, would it count as browsing the web, and in turn cause the price i pay per month to skyrocket? right now i only pay 10 dollars a month for txting and calling, but i dont use anything else because then it would cost more. would the same thing happen on this phone?
@OMGitsGODx Hi! (1) Facebook uses the internet. So if you use it (or any other web-app), and you don't have a data package, you will be charged Pay Per Use (PPU). In this case on Telus prepaid, it is $3/MB. (2) A SIM card holds your subscriber information (phone number) with the carrier. Without a SIM card, a SIM phone will not work.
@WirelessInsider so how many MB does facebook use then in a month? like, how often do you think i would be paying that 3 dollars if all i used was facebook?
@OMGitsGODx That all depends on what you're doing on Facebook. Viewing/posting status updates uses significantly less data than say, viewing/uploading photos. If you truly want to use the key features of this device (social networking) then I would recommend doing the following: add the $10 Data Feature (on Prepaid) for 100MB. Then, after the 30-days finish, you can view your data usage on MyTelusMobility or at a store. Based on your usage, you'll know what to do. Cheers!
