3 red lights is mainly to do with the CPU and RAM chips (both top and bottom side) with loose and cracked solder joints. Get a heatgun and some liquid flux. Inject the liquid flux under the chips with an adequate ammount. Preheat the board at 300 c then use heatgun and heat the chips 2 inches above for 5 minutes. Let cool down for 35 minutes and walah it will work again. Apply extra fans at 12 volts
@cartzar i may do if i get another board that has the same problem as described, but please bare in mind, there is no gurantee the fix will be permanent, that is an unfortunate fact with almost all overheating related errors. The quality of components and the motherboard itself are sub par unlike how the wii or ps3 is manurfactured for reliability
I love the 360 don't get me wrong but i shall be soon doing a mod using PC heatsinks and fans, bit of modification tho
@cartzar I was going to "upgrade" to the slim. When I asked about the warranty, the sales person told me it only had a one year warranty. That was enough to send me running back to my old xbox360 which has a three year warranty. I don't know if Microsoft is more confident with the new Xbox or if they just don't want to give a three year warranty due to warranty losses. For now, slim is a no go for me.
0022 is not only a solderjoint but can be to much pressor on any part of the board or the cpu/gpu, as a result of that it causes bad solder connections on the board or the board got hot and might have bent, i simple reflow may work, if not im going with the solderjoint problem..
I had error code 0100 or something, the I used the xclamp and bought a really expensive thermal compund which was suppose to be better than artic silver 5. And now i get motherfucking 0020 error. I think this is unfixable. My motherboard actually bent alot when i thighten the screws. So I think 0020 means that the motherboard is fucked.
I got that error before I just loosen the screws (almost off) and it went to just a green light in the middle. then the code changed to a 0022. Not totally sure what either of these codes are but doing some research on them. GL
@tonyv35 I used a heatgun and heated the board so it was really warm "without heatsinks", then i screwed it back together the correct way so the board didn't bend and now it's been working for about 2 months. So I take it back, the 0022 is fixable, I believe it's just needs heatgun.
Oh it's cool, I don't even remember what code I got, I think it was 0020 but that was because the board bended so much that i had to reinstall the xclampfix. But as I found out later, the 0022 and the 0020 are both fixable, you just need to use quite some time heatgunning and reinstalling the xclamp fix.
By the way my last fix "which worked" I used the old xclamps and 12 mm screws or 16, And drilled holes in the metal chassis, then put the xclamps at the bottom and then the motherboard, then heatsinks. With the washers. Like this:
Man, at first I was just trying to help you out by letting you know that I believe the 0020 was fixable, but you may have helped me out :). The code did change from a 0020 to 0022 but I got nothing to lose but a little time. I am gonna try and use a heat gun while foil wrapping the areas that need to be covered and see if that works. thanks..
Was your code a 0022 or 0020? In your oringinal post you said you had a 0020 error probably you just mistyped but either way I had the 0020 and it went to 0022 so I got nothing to lose but a little time. I am gonna try the heat gun method, I noticed my motherboard bend a few times when I was doing the clamp fix so maybe I have the same problem. Thanks a lot for the info.
@theflonert i fixed an error code 0020 the other day i think maddogxx or something like that it's saved on my page i tried it n it worked . now i just gotta another 360 with this 0022 error code i think the chips on the bottom may be a problem as well
rayman811 is right in saying you need to sort the GPU>heatsink issue
doesnt have to be via screws/washers etc
as simple as removing and applying new thermal paste can usually be enough, but be careful not to damage the Motherboard or anything in the process or you will kill it for good
also, if in warranty send it away, it may take a little while to get sorted but its better than voiding your warranty completely if you dont know what the hell your doing
in my point of view i think m$ should take some PROPER engineers and try and properly sort this problem otherwise they are going to loose sales in their future consoles and they are gonna waste a lot of money and time repairing customers consoles. if anyone finds the fix for this prolem i am so desperate to find a fix for it. btw my watercooling loop is on and ive put extra washers in between the waterblock and the board so it doesnt put pressure on it
Hey ive had the same problem ive tried the xclamp fix, towel trick, the coctail stick trick, ive tried to reflow the xbox, ive even watercooled my xbox 360 and it still has the 3 red lights....i fixed the stupid ethernet port problem by using a hairsryer NOT HEATGUN!!!<< TOO HOT and just heated the ethernet port for about 10mins min and then left it to cool and then ran a test and then i now have a 0022 problem with my watercooling loop setup. ive contacted m$ and they dont give a $**t
ya i should do a video on my 360. I found out that the GPU overheating is the cause of most 360 failures. I had to get the correct pressure on the GPU heatsink before I stopped getting RRoD. If its on right the heatsink will literally burn you after touching it for 3 seconds. Also before you tighten the heatsink, just put as minimal pressure as possible and let it 2 ring for like 5-10min, that will basically reflow the GPU.
Ya the way i did it was I took screws and used metal washers and nylon washers. I used both nylon and metal washers on the bottom of the motherboard(nylon against motherboard), but only nylon on the top.
Use 8 M5-.80 x 10 Machine Screws #138433, 16 #10 Flat Washers Nylon #139065 , 8 5mm Flat Washers Metal #138319
The hard part is finding that sweet spot in pressure that the GPU likes. Go too tight and you'll get nothin, but go to loose and not enough heat will dissipate.
it's a cold soldier throw it in the garbage, unless you want to use a heat gun like jangoreo said and maybe you'll get lucky and it will solder back in place.
you need to add thermal past to the GPU and the CPU i had that issue and then fixed it by putting the thermal past on the cpu chip and gpu and tight the screws after you do that just connect the dvd drive, fan etc. and turn on the onsloe if it works then re assemble the console it it dosent work then email me and i will try to help you as much as i can
what you have done it Tightened the X-Clamp Fix bolts down WAY TOO TIGHT !!!
You Have Screwed the Solder and Probably Briged Pins.
I Would Say its Done But Take the Heatsinks off and Take a HOT (350 Degree) Heatgun Flip the Board Upside Down and Apply heat for 15-20 Seconds Dont Touch, Let Cool, Re Assemble and try Again.
i have the same problem tried every thing x clamp screws wachers hot gun nothing seems to do the job there a small chip ncp 5331 getting hot very hot its a pwm generator think nead to change it dont now aill try and post if it cures my sys .
yea unfortunately for me I got 0022 even after i got the x clamp mod. this guy needs to hold down sync and press the eject button 4 times. that'll give u the code
same prob i did it after x clamp

Its A Problem With The GPU, Try Heatgunning It, If That Doesnt Work, Try The CPU

@kennydude19 you can use pc heatsinks on a 360? wow. i didnt know that.
well, i hope the 360 slim doesnt have this many problems. do you think the 360 slim is built sub par as well?
cartzar 1 year ago
@cartzar well i didn't say you can par say, the 360 uses a custom processor socket
i said im gonna try the idea, but may require some modifications to the actual heatsinks

@UnfoundWay the old fat xbox 360 warranty, at least outside of the US, were only 1 year.
if your console show RRoD during that period, Microsoft give you 3 years of extended warranty.
