Could the bonobo simply be saying: 'hey, you look intelligent', 'can't you get me out of this prison, I'm going crazy with boredom'. If apes are like us then perhaps we may be as dumb in not appreciating the simplest needs of our global friends, needs like food, clothing, water, an unmolested climate, no wars, etc etc.
we did not evolve specifically from apes, we evolved from a species that split off in too seperate species, that would develop into several different species, particularily the species that led up to homo sapians sapians, and the apes on the other side of the species spectrum
@the8888 We did not evolve from apes because we are apes still. And it is misleading to suggest there are two sides of the ape family, us and them. Chimpanzees, like the bonobo in this video, are much closer related to humans than they are to Orangutans or even Gorillas.
@Murglie what the hell? no no no i was just striking against the correlation that we evolved from modern apes like the creationist right wing claim! i never said that bonoboes and humans were not related! quite the opposite
@Murglie We did not evolve from apes and we are not apes. Humans and apes have a common ancestor, which means at some point an apelike ancestor split into at least two groups and each group evolved seperately, one group into apes, the other into humans.
@Murglie You can't make a claim like that without proof to back it up. If you would like to provide a link to the article that makes such a claim with scientific evidence, I would be more than happy to read it.
@wrylie188 You can't link in YouTube comments. Google 'Hominidae' if you don't believe me (which is actually generally not required, since it is a general fact, not a scientific claim). It is the taxonomical term used when describing the Great Ape family, which includes orangutangs, gorillas, chimpanzees and humans. You don't even have to lok at the Wikpedia page, there are plenty of sources that state the same.
I love how he explains to the children that the bonobo is an ape not a monkey, yet even the adults continue to call the bonobo a monkey. It's amazing how ignorant some people are
Surely there are some animals that are intelligent enough NOT to do things like this. You know like, yeah... you are so smart. I am going back to sleep. Ahhh yeah, that's humans. lol.
Hey Mel, your comments are much appreciated. If you can go to the zoo and videotape you doing this - put it on youtube and I might just think like you do.
At some point like 3:35 to 3:40 the bonobo thumps to Dr. SC but looks back over its shoulders...it is just trying to multi-task and look at its fellow creatures, or it is actually (it almost appears) pointing to Dr. SC while trying to tell its fellow bonobos, "check this out"? Makes you wonder
Hey Scott, Its Anna...I was showing the girls from the spa your video and they are all very impressed with Daves Big Brother! If you come to the spa sometime you can get a massage and they promise it will be as good as the one you gave the Bonobo!
There is much that amazes in this video. Dr. Churchill has established a RELATIONSHIP which, taken with the joy of both participants, points to the possibility of a deep bond between all animals (we too are animals). I come away remaining amazed.

Yeah, right. Like the deep bond between a lion and a zebra when the former is ripping the latter's throat out.
What Churchill is doing here is not that impressive. He's just imitating the ape's behavior and thereby catching it's attention. If you jump around in front of your dog you can get it excited and happy too. You can do this will all sorts of higher animals, but that doesn't change the fact that the damn thing is a fucking ape and is not anywhere near to a human being.
What a lovely creature, i mean person.

@Beenyad Humans are the last of the genus Homo, while chimps and gorillas are close, but are not the same genus as us.

yeah a dog gets excited but a dog can offer you anything to imitate with the idea that you'll do it back like the ape is
