  • i'm not sure. i have the complete surviving episodes. i would have to check this for you.

  • Which episode is this?

  • It was the one in the Junkyard. The first ever episode. I've been a Dr Who fan from the start.

It was the last thing he ever did. I remember seeing him in "Carry on Sergeant" probably where they got the idea to use him.

  • i recently watched `the pickwick papers' on dvd. william hartnell playred an irate cabbie who challenges mr pickwick to a fight.

  • Nice to see old Billy Hartnell in something other than 'Doctor Who' on youtube (although he was brill as the Doctor in any case)

Just wondering, is there any of William Hartnell (or stuff by other actors from the classic series as I'm strictly an old school Dr Who fan you see) other stuff on youtube that you can recomend?

This clip was good by the way.

  • William Hartnell was the first Doctor Who. I remember the first episode.

  • @CreepyReid Although I'm only 27 I'm a BIG fan of all those old shows (thanks to DVDs and the like) and I enjoy them very much

I often go on here to find old programs and movies to download, but its always nice to find comments from people who remember them when they first went out.

Just checking though, was the first episode you saw, in fact the FIRST EVER episode (namely the one in the junkyard, rather than the first Dalek one)

I hope you don't mind me asking..

  • you are correct theseustoo

  • Unless I'm much mistaken, wasn't William Hartnell the very first 'Dr Who'?

    :)

  • Never missed this when I was 9 yrs old.

  • Blimey thats half the carry on team there

  • great show, lets see more of it. where is michael now. and the other lads,

  • Was "Carry on Sergeant", the first "Carry On", inspired by this? Hartnell also played the Sergeant in that.

  • The first 2 series went out 'live' thats why most are missing, not many were recorded, they were made similar to American comedies ie: using several different writers & around 40+ shows a year..

  • @jrgboy

i had an idea that the first series were `wiped' most series were on all the channels before `71'. cost cutting exercise. mystery and imagination would be a classic example of that. only one third of the episodes survive. all the best, sonybimp

  • This must be the first trough British comedy on the TV

  • Hi all, would you like to know that the complete series 1 of Bootsie and Snudge is released by Network DVD on 21st September 2009 price about £29.39 (retail £39.99). Please pass this onto other sites and on you tube!. thanks.

Bootsie and Snudge - the complete series 1 (40 episode's) released on Sept 21st 2009.

  • Brilliant ! Thanks for posting this

  • havent seen this since it was first on. memories of the time. harry fowler was replaced by michael medwin. I think it was bill fraser, not frazier.

  • The cast history is very complicated. Series 1 (1957-58) ...started with Hartnell, Geoffrey Sumner, Medwin, Alfie Bass, Bresslaw, Hawtrey and Rossington. Sumner left in Feb 1958, replaced first by Bernard Hunter, then Jack Allen. Hartnell missed a few and was replaced by Bill Fraser but came back for thr rest of the 1st series, then left.

In March, 1958, Hawtrey left and Rossington was sacked. Their parts were taken by other actors who were not popular and Rossington was reinstated.

  • Series 2 (1958-59) started with Fraser, Medwin, Rossington, Ted Lune, and C.B. Poultney as the officer. Poultney left and was replaced by Frank Williams (the Vicar in Dad's Army).

For Series 3 (1959-60), Medwin was replaced by Harry Fowler and Rossington had gone replaced first by Harry Towb, then Robert Desmond, then Mario Fabrizi. For the 4th and last Series (1960-61) Bass and Fraser had left to star in their spin-off, Bootsie and Snudge and Hartnell & Sumner returned & Dick Emery also joined

  • The other actor is Norman Rossington playing Private Cupcake.

  • hi lester 1beck! sorry for the long delay in replying. william hartnell was the first sarge, then bill frazier took over. william hartnell returned to the series much later and replaced frazier. many of the episodes are missing. lets hope they are gathering dust in an archive somewhere! all the best, sonybimp.

  • Apparently only the ones released by Network survive. These are 3 from Series 1, all 39 from Series 3 (the first to be pre-recorded) and about 12 from Series 4. I think all of BOOTSIE AND SNUDGE survives, though. All the surviving ARMY GAME were repeated on Granada Plus between about 1996 and 2001, as were Series 1 & 2 of BOOTSIE AND SNUDGE, 1 episode of which is included on both Network's ARMY GAME and JACK ROSENTHAL AT ITV releases.

  • not sure i will have to check my DVD's

  • Nice to see this again after so many years..

  • yes a blast from the past!

  • Norman Rossington.

  • Charles Hawtrey Bernard Bresslaw Michael Medwin and who?????
