  • no your all wrong . none of these bands are emo. your emo your all a buncha emos. how about that?

  • fuck being born in '97

  • "ba ba bap ba bap do de do ba bap. do do do do do de do and you."

  • this is indie emo, part of a 90's emo revival wave of bands that mixed alternative rock/indie with emo, of course this band is more on the alternative side ( with the get up kids, braid and american football) of it but there's bands that a bit more agressive though of course not as agressive as hardcore punk (this bands are also called screamo bands) like pg 99 and city of caterpillar

if you prefer the new veins of post hardcore that came in the mid 2000 thats ok but just know that's not emo

  • REAL EMO BRUTAL!

seriously, how many people listen to bands because they are emo? most of the bands you listen to because of that wouldn't approve of doing so.

  • haha your all tosser,if dont like it fuck off.BOP BOP!!

  • Nothing means anything. It's all empty symbolism with subjective assignments and designations to help individuals and societies project our bullshit and pretend like it doesn't all end with the basic facts of existence.. Emo is emotional punk rock. What does that mean? Who knows? What is punk? Who cares? I still think The Promise Ring kicks ass and they help me cope with all my own bullshit and petty, pointless existence.

  • Why did ever we meet...hmm nice spelling jadetree. sick though

  • No, actually it's just alternative pop. The name 'emo' was given by people into more aggressive style of music inside the US punk scene, because more less these bands were part of the local hardcorepunk scene's, like it or not.

  • Hey guys, grow the fuck up and stop complaining. There are two kinds of emo. This emo didn't stand out because it had nothing to offer to the shit youth of society. MCR emo stood out because it made teens look rebellious and cutting themselves ect... When you think about it, this is the shit version of emo. Definitely less popular and DEFINATELY dead.

  • @paniccat this guy has it right, fuck this stupid shit man i love emarosa and MCr and shit this stuff is homosex man fuck the rpomise ring and shit man

  • @Balkasu Damn right, fuaggot. U no i no what u talk about.

  • Comment removed

  • @paniccat you have absolutely no idea what the fuck you're talking about.

  • @paniccat there isn't two kinds of emo, there is this style and that is all.

my chemical romance play alternative rock, and the rest of the bands who play faux 'emo' play watered down metalcore or alt rock influenced post hardcore and real emo/screamo bands had songs about cutting themselves, look at the usurp synapse/hassan i sannah 'just do it' split; its a record which promotes killing yourself.

this style of music isn't dead, there are plenty of decent bands who still play this style today.

  • Hey guys... music is music. Anyone with ears can tell you that this band sounds nothing like the bands that get labeled as "emo" nowadays. So what's the fucking problem? As long as you and I know, why the fuck should it matter what a bunch of 14 year olds think or say? They're idiots.

  • @tokyoerose999 - lol all fag bands. Get a grip KID, punk is retired because it wasn't very good. No one likes a buncha fags making crybaby songs. Go suck a cock? You're just mad I put you in your place. Later cunt.

  • @tokyoerose999 - lol all fag bands. Get a grip KID, punk is retired because it wasn't very good. No one likes a buncha fags making crybaby songs. Go suck a cock? You're just mad I put you in your place. Later cunt.

  • Fuck this shit for making weak spineless emo shit popular and relegating death metal to the underground.

  • @ModernDayPaulRevere dude shut up, this stuffs underground aswell. learn to appreciate all kinds of music, i fuckin hate death metal but i dont dispute that it is good music for people who like that kinda stuff. music is only as good as the individual listenin to it says it is, beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

  • @ModernDayPaulRevere i actually prefer Death Metal to be on the underground since you know, what some shitholes did to it when they created Deathcore

  • The promise ring fans know what real emo is, i'm so glad of it, i'm tired of people saying Alesana or My Dear Whoever is emo, that's just Fashioncore

  • It's funny how many kids give me flack for labeling an actual "EMO" band (in the 90's music discription) Emo.They have no idea that the word was used before to discribe bands like TPR and others back in the 90's, I have to tell my son(13) that the word "emo" today is used to discribe the wrong bands.

  • @1thess523 I love how I just randomly come across one of you comments will looking at videos. I shoulda expected that lol. But on another note, I agree with what you're saying.

  • You guys are all fags and stupid, "Punk" is dead. But if you must know, it was bands like Cro Mags, Black Flag, and Misfits.

You all who called "Blink 182" punk need to eat a razorblade.

  • @LocalOBGYN lol take the Internet more seriously next time.

  • @LocalOBGYN "punk" is not dead go listen to title fight, deadlights , agent.... and go listen to dude ranch blink-182 is a punk band so suck a fat one cock smoker

  • If a band sounds emoish, how you can tell that they are really emo is to look how they dress...

If they look like total nerds or hicks, probably emo. If they wear eyeliner, not emo.

  • ps- whoever thinks FOB and MCR are emo needs to wikipedia the genre "emo". Those bands are trash compared to SDRE, Cap'n Jazz, or the get up kids.

Don't listen to everything Hot Topic tells you.

  • this is one of my favorite songs on this cd!

  • by the way if you like the promise ring go chekc out maritime , this is the actual band of the lead singer

  • love this video

  • this doesn't really sound emo to me. it sounds more like Big Star than it does Mineral

  • first time i see a video from the promise ring... any other out there?

  • ....ma perchè non si suona più così :) !?

  • Growing up in Chicago in the midst of a huge scene in the 90's, I skewed towards bands like Cap'n Jazz and Braid. I loved the pop punk from the guys I met via skating, 88 fingers, Bollweevils, but I loved that atonal, minor chord sound that I heard from "emo" bands even more. When I really started seeing bands like this, i always thought, Jawbox, Fuguzi. Later I knew it was a movement all our own, midwest! This vid is great because I used to dress in the same style, still do now a bit.

  • Wisconsin's Finest! Emo pioneers.. When music and shows were fun, exciting, and a bit crazy.. When if you got a doc martin in your face.. You were a happy boy... because that was a good show! Miss you guys!

  • @yowatsupdudesweet How about nice warm cup of STFU?

  • at the start the the drummer looks like lead singer from weezer

  • this song sounds like the foo fighters, not hating, just saying. I love this song

  • 411 vm europe 2003... great soundtrack, best song in the video, sick song to shred to, nuff said...

  • @ganstamannirvana93 Don't forget Thursday, Posion The Well, Spitafield, And Engine Down. :)

  • @giutar24 Those are also great bands. Even though Poison the Well is more metalcore than they are emo.

  • music videos..........whatever happened to you?

  • That was major pass interference committed on the ginger bread man.

  • Yeah, that's a fifteen yard penalty, automatic first down.

  • quite poor sound...

  • welcome to youtube!

  • @LeBob25 i believe sloopiness and slower tempo was what this kind of bands wanted back on the 90's, and i think it's better cause they might sound exactly like this live, not like modern music that sounds fantastic on record because of studio tricks and then sound like crap live

  • you are.

  • nice, thats hilarious, you should write for George lopez

  • can i use you as a reference in my application?

  • i don't know, i think you're overqualified already

  • Good old stuff! :D

  • I saw PR open up for HUM back in 98'. Yes I feel old...

  • That woulda been a great show. Both of those bands are great.

  • (L)

  • I should be really into these guys because I love a lot of 90's emo, but for some reason I never got into them. This song is ok.

  • What 90`s emo bands did you like? Im not big on these either to be honest.

  • Sunny Day Real Estate, Jawbreaker, Texas is the Reason to name a few.

  • I agree, I never really liked the "Pop- Punk" style of Emo. I always liked the harder, Indie bands like SDRE and Mineral and the half Screamo, half Post- Hardcore bands like Indian Summer or Julia.

  • I should check those bands out. I heard/seen the names before, but I never listened to any of their stuff.

I listen to Saetia which is like full on screamo, but the lyrics are soo good and I like that short lived band of the late 90's. They'd be even better with more understandable screaming imo.

  • great bands dude

  • @ganstamannirvana93 -Most of your "emo"bands today combine Post Hardcore and Screamo to get their sound. Pop Punk is okay. But you got to be careful what you mix with it. Jimmy Eat World and Saves the Day, although they do toomuch of it now, did it well 9 years ago. Btw, Texas is the Reason is my personal favorite.

  • @ganstamannirvana93 you should check out moss icon, and nation of ulysses

  • @Invadrshanee I have, they're both great.

  • bands from milwaukee can kill it man. this shitz old skool rad.

  • One of the best emo bands ever and easily one the best bands i've seen live! The only other emo band that comes close is Pop Unknown! Thank god for Jade Tree Records and Deep Elm Records they opened my eyes to whole different type of music back in 98.

  • wow, does it really matter whats emo and what not? cant it just be music? for goodness sakes people

  • Comment removed

  • I &heart; davey

  • THE BEST SHIT!!!LOVE IT!!!

  • this song is adorable

  • awesome song, awesome video

  • i saw this band in john hiltz's basement when they only had a 7" and nobody knew them. they were anemo band then that sucked, and they are still an emo band that sucked. your opinion that this isn't emo is just as opinionated as my statement that they suck. they are opinions. who said you were the fact police. fact this is emo. deal with it.

  • Actually, you are the one who needs to be educated. Emo used to mean bands like The Get Up Kids, Braid, Sunny Day Real Estate and The Promise Ring. Now of course it's stuff like My Chemical Romance,Fall Out Boy and AFI.

  • Actually, emo started in the 80's as punk sounds with more "emotional" lyrics and punkers labeled these bands as emo. Such bands include Minor Threat and Rites of Spring. Some people even considered Black Flag and Fugazi as emo. No doubt it has evolved over the years, like every other genre, but so many different sounds have been lumped into emo now, its just silly. Anyway, why label music? People should just listen to what they like and not care what others listen to. Not saying you do drogza1.

  • Black Flag is THE FARTHEST thing from emo!!!!! Wow, people actually say that they are? Unbelievable. Fugazi/Minor Threat and Rites of Spring... meh, whatever. Think what you want to think about those bands. but if there was ever a band that graced this earth that was the anti-emo, it was Black Flag.

    That is all.

  • I've never really listened to Black Flag, I just remember reading that in some music forum a while back. .I dont know if i would call Fugazi emo either and I dont like Minor Threat.

  • umm why did this get -3

  • @drogaz1 agreed.

  • @drogaz1 Everything after The Promise Ring isn't emo but rather pop-punk. A shame too, AFI used to be good hardcore punk.

  • @drogaz1 but MCR and FOB are actuallly pretty good. being the only goo emo bands recently

  • @chobitz7 I never said I disliked them. I like a lot of modern emo bands including MCR, AFI, FOB, Brand New, Say Anything, Circa Survive and a few others. I tend to favor "golden age" emo bands like Sunny Day Real Estate, Mineral, The Promise Ring and Jimmy Eat World.

  • @drogaz1 ah, ok man. cool

  • @drogaz1 OMFG how can you say that mcr and fob (MTV sellout ) are emo damn they have nothing to do with the sound, the diy, independent label an 7s of the 90s emo . They are only call emo cause it sell to do , wake the fuck up kid.

How can you listen to a promise ring and then comment that fob and mcr are the good emo band right know.

  • @TRUEROMANCEMOVIE I don't think that's what he meant. I think he was saying "this is what emo really meant and now this what people think it is."

  • @TRUEROMANCEMOVIE Really? Brand New sounds nothing like Sunny Day Real Estate, even on there later albums? And Say Anything Sounds nothing like The Get Up Kids or Braid? The Ghost of You by MCR doesn't display any obvious influence from SDRE at all? Also how does The Promise Ring sound anything like say, Rites of Spring or Gray Matter? If you want to be such a purist at least be consistent. I'm allowed to have my opinion and you are allowed to have yours.

  • @drogaz1 sup my name is Pete wentz from fall out boy you can see me on the cover of us weekly or star magazine with my beautiful wife aslhey simpson...

  • @TRUEROMANCEMOVIE That doesn't really answer anything. If you are trying to say FOB are sell outs then you are kind of correct in some respects but when was emo a genre that had a subculture with rules and values like punk? Plus, FOB are more emo-pop than pure emo. Also, you don't see Max Bemis, Jess Lacey or Gerard Way on the cover of US Weekly so your claim fails to answer any of my questions about those bands.

  • @drogaz1 This is just ridiculous. All of you please do your homework. If it doesn't sound anything like punk then how can you consider it emo? The genre has it's roots in punk. I don't consider brand new emo anymore and I never considered 30 seconds to Mars an emo band. Do you guys even know what kind of bands started all of this? Bands like minor Threat, Grey Matter and Beefeater. People who took the hardcore punk scene in a more personal direction.

  • @feetoffthesky Brand New sounds about as punk as this. And who said anything about 30 Seconds to Mars? I don't really think I would consider them an emo band at all personally. And how are Minor Threat emo? Most of there songs sound pretty political to me.,

  • @drogaz1 Which is weird because AFI has been around longer than most of the bands you mentioned. Albeit as a hardcore punk band.

  • @myguitardidyermom12 I know! AFI is sometimes called Goth too (completely different music scene/culture from Emocore). Old AFI before they went Pop-Rock was actually pretty good. Nothing at all like old school emo which is good too.

  • Comment removed

  • @drogaz1 well said.

  • @drogaz1 Emo has become a derogatory term that is used to describe any kind of modern music these days that has any semblances of punk within it. This and the bands that you mentioned were actually part of the second wave that became much less focused on the punk and straight edge parts of the movement. If you listen to saves the day or AFI's really old shit it shows the dividing line between first wave bands (minor threat, etc) and second wave bands. AFI, however, became part of third wave.

  • @feetoffthesky WORD! remember embrace?

  • @drogaz1

and b4 that, it referred to the hardcore punk scene that turned more "emotional" like Rites of Spring,Embrace and hardcore bands like indian summer.

  • @drogaz1 My Chemical Romance is not emo.

  • @drogaz1 You are stupid. MCR used to be emo (their first 2 albums), Fall Out Boy have never been emo, but yeah a lot of people think them emo for some reason. AFI was never emo. They are hardcore/horror punk, later alternative

BTW i realize this comment is 2 years old

  • @LongviewGD182 MCR were never emo.

  • of the full lengths, only the first has that emo sound. this shit is indie pop all the way. way to tell if art is good is if could not have been simple to make but is made to look easy. this is pop music never designed to get popular. not my favorite album of theirs but definately the best i think

  • Back when "emo" was honest.

  • before it turned into pop-punk too

  • i wish i could have seen them on tour with jets to brazil . i'm pretty sure it would beat the last few shows i went to... scratch that i am 100% sure.

  • Oh man I wish I could go back to the days of TPR and JTB touring, love em both!!

  • saw them both in montreal back in 97 or 98....i had tears of joy listening to TPR and it was my first time listening to Jets to Brazil. I have goosebumps just remembering it.

  • You can't just tell that the lead singer has a lisp.

  • papapara papapara pa paa

  • some one mentioned jawbreaker. dont forget jets to brazil! i only found jawbreaker after jets so i owe a lot to them and to blake. promise ring are so wonderful. it sucks that i missed them in the time that they defined.

    oh well.

we have fall out boy...i guess...

    :(

  • OMG JAWBREAKER you just hit me over the head with memories! JET BLACK.

  • i was born in 90. but god i really wish i could of been a teen in the 90s to experience all the amazing emo music of that time. today just makes me so sick. listening to this song makes me want to cry cause i feel so nostalgic hahaha -.-

  • YEAH!

  • I gotta say, it was pretty awesome.

A mix tape could get you laid. It was a great time to be a guy with good hair.

  • That is retarded, I am pretty sure at the time the Promise Ring entered the scene, "EMO" was still a swear word. Instead of labeling bands why don't you take it for what it is worth. I hate the word Emo---every fucking song is emotional. I am pretty sure you are a girl, because I am sick of these pussy guys walking around making good music look bad. Why can't the scene kids claim their gay bands without dragging my favorites into it?

  • well..my name is bree so its obvious i'm a girl. and labels exist for a reason, even though people use them incorrectly all the time. what are you ranting about anyway with scene kids and stuff like that? shut up you look stupid. I know TPR and certain other bands did not want to be called emo but whatever thats what they are always affiliated with. Do you think anyone is going to talk about TPR and call them "the music of the early 90's" seriously get real.

  • Scene kids are faggots though.

    Can't disagree there.

  • well, EMO wasnt even the word. People didnt know what to call it. i remember THRASHER magazine calling it "WATERD DOWN PUNK".

BUT HEY! if you really want to go back to some real foundation shit, check out JAWBREAKER and MXPX.

  • Jawbreaker is decent, MxPx fucking sucks dick.

Anyway, I'm sick of people bringing up "emo" in the comment section of this video. Fuck off and just listen to the music will you? Christ.

  • Jawbreaker is "decent"??? Lol. More like fucking incredible.

  • Ooopsie, I meant Promise Ring**. DUH.

  • I am pretty sure The Promise Ring would never want to be grouped in along with the word "emo." Does anyone remember when the word was almost derogatory?

  • Gnewikow of the Promise Ring in an article from Guitar World in 1999..."I could validate the point that we are an emo band, and I could also go on the other side and invalidate it. It all comes down to whoevers asking, their perception of what it is. Emo is the most ridiculous thing to say. What band isnt emotional?

  • YEAH! I remember bands like Jawbreaker, Get Up Kids, and Promise Band would get offended when the word "emo" was brought up in interviews. And back then, it meant something less than what it means now: bitch ass suicidal eye-liner shit.

  • Well Said!

  • You say that like emo is a bad thing, I mean todays stereotype is, but this was emo. this was the emo genre its just perception of it that's changed.

  • Wikipedia really nails it if you check it out; based on their definitions, these guys were part of the second wave--and I love them for it.

  • Yeah, except the AOL emo chat was the joint! haha

    RIP my youth

  • my favorite song by them is Electric Pink

  • i love this song

reminds me of when i was little

    im only 15 so yeah

    makes me happy

  • davey looks like flea to me.

  • ps.. buy a jawbreaker or hotwater music album.. and learn something...

  • saw them first in toronto in 99..met a guy on tuesday...said we should see them on saturday...thought i was going to die on QEW..we got there in torontos china town..i got a sprite at chinese resturant fortune cookie said "an empty stomach is politicaly incorrect"..i survived the drive there and back..the show was amazing...it was a good night...i love this emo crap..the only people who call it emo are the kids who werent there for it... it wasnt emo it was good music that spawned sh"t...

  • This is the REAL emo.. Now emo doesn't exist anymore..

  • why are people still arguing about what's emo? just enjoy the music and don't worry about labels.

  • I agree, sowhat. :]

  • Even if they were, they, along with Sunny Day Real Estate are original emo. Before it became a fad instead of music. Anyway, they rock. Love em.

  • +1 for effort, but what people don't tend to realise is that emo technically isn't a genre of music, but a sub culture... Although you're right with this band being one of the fore runners to the aforementioned sub culture. Along with Rites of Spring, Sunny day, jimmy eat world etc.

  • Sub culture? Why is it a sub culture, you say? Just curious. I understand that straightedge is a sub culture, but i'm not sure about emo.

  • dont forget texas is the reason

  • kids have battered this emo look, made the promise ring nutin in return. very good band with texas the 2 cracked it buy the 7 inch split.. i think maritime have a chance perhaps the 3rd lp will be the one davey deserves...

keep steady and dont flake exciting times ahead.

  • wow it like coll

  • nice voice sexy

  • Maritime is better... MKE music has come a long way... Check out these MKE bands:

    Decibully

    Atlatl

    Brief Candles

    its sick...

  • more mature and evolved but without the Promise Ring there is no Maritime

  • Agreed:) And without Capn Jazz there would have been no promise ring. Oh Davey and his musical projects.

  • LMFAO INDIE bhahahahha how can a indipendent music label be a genre of music hahaa.

  • I don't know; the same way a chunk of minerals (aka a ROCK) can be a genre of music.

  • rofl, how can an emotion be a type of music?

  • EMO= Emotional hardcore.

    That's it's original definition

Emo isn't an abbreviated term for the word Emotion.

  • Not to sound jerky 'n stuff, cous i like TPR, but its not plain emo, its like indie/emo, and its more pop oriented than most emo.

  • True. More Sunny Day Real Estate than Indian Summer.

  • Exactly what i meant =]

  • This is one of my favorite songs by The Promise Ring

  • I like this voice

  • this music video is golden

  • gayest video ever. fucking love this band!

  • this is real emo and not that bullshit u see every day with tight jeans and horrible hair , taht is called haircore not emo

    this is emo

    they just screw this scene

  • who knows what kind of car that is

  • emo was started by Rites of Spring

  • Wax, even!

  • lol i love how people take more time tagging music w/ genres rather than just enjoying it...even ian mckaye hates the whole "emo" label. he's been against the tag since he was in embrace back in the 80s

  • Well said.

  • Your all idiots...

  • Hell yes.

  • lol you have no idea what you are talking about get your facts right before you talk this is actuelly true emo and emo started in the early 90s by a guy named guy piccioto

  • 1984-5ish

  • 1983

  • Ironic comment, asshat.
