I am getting stuck at the reboot portion, i get to about 4 to 5 bars, then windows says that redsn0w stopped working and it will look for a solution. I tried renaming the file in the updates, and no luck. Running Windows Vista and downloaded the zip with firefox. any suggestions out there. Iphone is 3g virgin (never been hacked) w 4.2.1 and 05.15.04. Thanks.

@sleeps41 I have never had this issue before. Try right clicking on the exe and selecting "Run as Administrator", I have heard that helps sometimes.

Here is where I am stuck. First, how do i create a custom firmware restore file in case i have to do a restore on my iphone 3g? I have looked around but have not had much luck finding a tutorial. @britt2knee88 - I used redsn0w 0.9.6rc16 and it ran with no problem. It's untethered for the iphone 3g. What helped was that i ensured that I first right clicked on redsn0w, went to properties, clicked on "Run in compatibility mode for Windows XP (service pack 2), in the same window click "Run program as administrator". Click "ok" from the same window. From there I backed up, right clicked on redsn0w and clicked on "Run as administrator" and followed this tutorial from there.

@britt2knee88 Also, if your unlocking. Once you jailbreak, open Cydia, serch for fuzzyband, install. It will tell you if you can go to an earlier firmware (bootloader 05.08 you can). If you can't, the program will tell you (05.09 and up has no support yet), then your stuck like myself and the only option so far is the ipad baseband, but be sure you know that as of now if you go this route your phone will be unlocked permanently, no going back as of now. So do your homework.

all you guys that think this doesnt work, well it does, i had the same problem as most of you, when it tells you to go to the iphone or ipod or whatever updates then go to that folder and if it just ends with the word "restore" then just remame the folder and at the end of where it says "restore" with a .ipsw at the end IE : iphone.1,2,4.2.1_BC148_RESTORE­.ipsw. this will work, i had the same problem.

@PasyaAndilolo Hold down both home and power buttons at the same time until the device turns off. Then turn it on normally and retry the jailbreak. If it freezes again then hold down the buttons again to boot it normally and restore, then try the jailbreak again.

If you are stuck in Recovery mode then use TinyUmbrella to kick it out. After you are booted back up try the jailbreak again. @ps4guy First of all, give the phone a hard reboot. You can do this by holding both buttons until the screen turns off. Then power it off normally. After that try the process again. If that doesn't work then restore your device in iTunes, as some jailbreaks require you to. 4.2.1 is the last version that will run on the 3G so you do not need any SHSH files. Hope this works!

@ps4guy Really odd. are you SURE you are using an iPhone 3G, or are you using a 3GS? The iPhone 3G does NOT support 4.3.1. It even shows it on apple . com / ios /. Do you have homescreen wallpapers and multitasking? If you are using a 3GS you can upgrade to 4.3.1 and download redsn0w 0.9.6rc9 from bit . ly / dPUwht. If you are using a 3G then yes, restore to 4.2.1. afterwards you can restore from a backup. Just fix the links. YouTube doesn't allow links in the comments.
