@MtnXfreeride You got a little nuclear plant there :-) Nice power machine, congrats! I heard Jeff Patton has 2 Quadro + One Tesla unit and a 1200 watts power supply but that's just insane.
I hated this motherboard :P I think I am going to get a new one even though I only had this for 6 months. I got it cheap but even then it wasnt worth it. How do you like it?
@megamindstorm101 worst POS Ive ever had for a mobo. A friend of mine and mine both broke plugging in microphones and had them replaced once already. I got mine through intel retail edge cheap, same for you?
@MtnXfreeride yup same here. IT came in the package with the cpu and I got an ssd too all for 500$ the cpu and ssd was a deal and technically so was the mobo. I saw where they placed the ram and I thought it was crap but the newegg reviews showed that it was decent. Once it came and I realized it needs ram under 1.6v that bugged me nobody in my family belives me that this is the worst motherboard in the world and I cant wait to get a new one. However gskill pi is nice and 1.5v so i use that :P
@megamindstorm101 yeah my new mushkin memory (i am currently rebuilding this computer and will have another video) is 1.5v. It is expensive to have to get 4GB chips for 12GB of memory since most MOBOs have 6 ram DIMMS.
@RebornLegacy Yeah, this was over a year ago, and the board was bundled very cheap with the processor through an accommodation at work - I 100% agree the rampage would be a better choice, in fact I am thinking about the rampage III.
@ixy1987 there are different types of raid.. here I have a raid 0 array.. which is 2 hard drives combined into one so it reads/writes almost twice as fast as a single hard drive by splitting files up between the 2 drives. Its risk is that it doubles the chance of losing your data, because if one hard drive dies, you lose data on both. Other types of raid arrays will mirror hard drives so if one dies, you lose no data because the mirrored drive has the backup.
@MtnXfreeride cool thanx....but will you need to install specialised software to mirror hard drives or is it something that comes with a specialised HDD ???....and can i mirror data with any 2 hard drives or is there HDD specially made for raid??
@snoopy235689 nice... it sounds like intel is going to have a good bundle deal again this fall for retail employees, so I might be upgrading soon for a good price!
@snoopy235689 that should all run fine.. you can overclock the CPU a bit if you wanted. Do some research to find out of the i7 950 is just an overclocked 920, if so, save the money and buy the 920 and clock it to a 950.
@MtnXfreeride Well im in germany and here the 920 cost 10 EUR Less than the 950 so i decide to buy 950. Because i dont have to overclock the 920 to 950. I also dont want to overclock because of the 3years geranty in Germany. ;) You think this is a good idia? PS: Sry about my English
@snoopy235689 yeah thats a good idea, I would do your setup, its a step up from mine.
My only question is about your memory. Is it only going to have 2x2GB or will be be 2x4GB? Either way, it should be triple channel, you need either 3 or 6 sticks. I would go for at least 6GB to run in triple channel.
@snoopy235689 its not going to slow it down.. just not run at its potential... when you spend this much on a system, whats another $30 for a third 2GB stick? I often have more than 4GB cached in windows 7 anyway... why sell yourself short on memory (one of the cheapest upgrades)

@dalsomvideo Hard drive speed is big for startups, basically the computer reads everything off the hard drive to transfer the windows files needed to memory and do its initial setup. Get a second 500GB and put them in a RAID 0 for a faster start. Also, upgrade to windows 7.. and get rid of useless startup programs.
I have the Corsair H50 watercooler and was planning to overclock my i7 920 to 4 GHz and was wondering if you know if this board is any good for overclocks that high.
I have, that's why there is a link to the redo in the annotations. I didn't have cables managed here because I had a new CPU cooler, second gfx card and a new power supply in the mail. It looks much better now and runs cool.
I didnt have any overheating issue with the stock cooler OC'd to 3.2Ghz, it would hover around 72C and now with my Coolermaster V8 it hovers around 60C at 3.2 100% CPU.
well.. I work at bestbuy.. so not as much as it looks like.. the processor/motherboard/windows 7 was a combo deal through intel and the hard drives, graphics card and PSU I already had, so basically, the bundle, case and memory brought my total to $500.
I've got the same mainboard and I was wondering what CPU Cooler you have in now, because this vid is pre cpu cooler update. I've tried an Tacens Gelus Pro but that one didn't fit in because of the DIMMs. Darn shame Intel didn't think of that when placing the DIMMs.
i'm new to computer building well as far as... i've never built one yet but i've been reesearching PCs for over 2 years... and what i posted earlier is for the most part what i'm getting was wondering though, i heard for windows 7 you have to have windows XP or Vista installed in order to install windows 7 is this true? if so how do i go about getting it installed because i don't have windows xp lol
OK, for the windows 7 upgrade you need XP or Vista installed first. Now, if you are a student, I would recommend buying XP on newegg for $99 and then buying the $40 student win7 pro upgrade.
If you aren't a student, I recommend going to newegg and searching for "Windows 7 system builders" <-- FULL win7 home is $105 and win7 prem. is $140. Catch on these is they can be activated 1 time. So, build a system image after install.. which win7 can do now!
nice set up! i like i like! i'm about to purchase my new set up as soon as my tax check comes i'm getting the new i7 MSI X58 Pro-E LGA 1366 Intel X58 ATX Intel Motherboard - Retail with an i7 3.06 processor 1gb nvidia card, 2 TB hard drive and an additional 1TB hard drive, the gold 6GB (3x2GB) 240 pin DDR3 ram, a rosewill bronze 700watt power supply the azza solana 1000 Black case... with Blue LED and the huge case fan. i can't wait and i'm going to sell my old system once it all arrives lol
I dont think a 260 is more powerful than 9800gt SLi. If the game supports SLi i bet it would be better, if not then the 260 would win. Those cards have hit a good price point though, and I would love to simplify and make room by having a single card. Dont forget, this video is 5 months old.
Oh, I didn't even think you might've got them cheap. Good idea to hold out for the 300 series, that's what I'm doing too. I would have thought a 260 could match/beat SLi 9800GTs tho. SLi GTs match the old 8800 ultra, which is beaten by the 260/4850
2 9800GTs? Why? They get identical performance as two 8800GTs. For that price you could have got a single card like a GTX260 Core 216 or an HD 4850 and you would have equal, if not better performance.
I already had one from when I bought a 8800GT back in the day, and BFG upgraded it because it blew. I picked up another 9800gt off ebay for $50. It plays everything I throw at it maxed out smoothly.
Im holding out for the nvidia 300 series.. makes sense right?
you should buy Flight Simulator X for these specs, even if your not interested in planes the visuals will be an absolute treat with those 4 cores running at 3GHz
Yes. it has the features of vista and more but runs smooth like XP. All three of my computers have had XP on them, and windows 7 runs either the same or faster - the difference is what it can do.
I have come across many programs and hardware (my old ancient webcam that didnt even work on XP/Vista) that will run without a hitch on 7. My ancient no name webcam is plug n play! I almost threw it out a year ago b/c vista/XP wouldnt recognize without a driver disk.
My nephew and I just finished his I7 build last night and it's running Win 7 (evaluation copy I think he's using). We did a video rendering test against my old AMD 3700+ system and his rendered the 5 minute video in 2 min/ 20 sec, while mine took almost an HOUR! Crazy speeds!
Wmv are small files. I only use it to upload to YouTube. This video is uploaded as a wmv. It's not noticible from the original file except that my camera does 60fps and I only want 30fps for YouTube
I bet they all look the same? I had a rocketfish in it before.. it was SOOO much louder. However, I must add that this antec PSU blows.. I cant believe they cant even wrap the cables! Even my rocketfish PSU had wrapped cables . I had to wrap them myself with UV reactive wrap from online. Everything about it is cheap. It makes a loud high pitch sound when the CPU is off but PSU is plugged in.
Maybe you could help. I plan on buying a new Dell PC and want to definitely record HD and most likely also edit HD. What do I need for a hard drive. Dell rep jus said at 640 SATA drive. I have heard elsewhere I needed a RAID drive. Your experienced opinion appreciated.
You need a raid 0 setup. When editing HD video, it was always choppy and it made it hard to line things up when I was using 1 400GB sata 2 HDD. Uncompressed video files are huge, you need all the speed you can get.
Make sure you have a good graphics card, even something like an 8800GT which go for $70 on ebay makes a huge difference. Also, if you can, get an i7 processor, because it will also have a nice triple channel DDR3 memory setup.
Well raid is not 100% needed but can be helpful. if you dont get SSD's, you need to have HDD with 500GB single platters. The most HDD makers have them, look for that on their site. I know Seagate, WD and Samsung has them, also others i think ;).
But atm 500GB single platters HDD are the fastest on the market, ofcourse SSD's are faster but the price is imo to high for the GB you get.
it changed.. ive been upgrading parts since this video.. I have a coolmaster V8 heatsink, 2x9800gt OC+ in SLi also. it outperforms a gtx 285, so its good.
It was a combo deal $280 for processor mobo and windows 7 ultimate ( when out). Yeah I didn't do the wiring here b/c I had a new psu coming. I totally agree this board sucks, it's on it's way to intel for an RNA already. I should sell the board when the replacement comes.
how do u create the windows 7 boot up disk. i made the disk but nothing happens when i make the computer boot directly from the disk. it says no bootable media.
You definitely work at best buy. How do i know? The retail edge big deal bundle with rocketfish power supply. heheh. just putting mine together now but with the 902 case and a 4850
yup haha.. but i just got rid of that POS rocketfish PSU, it was an older version and it is SOO LOUD I couldnt take it anymore. I have the antec 650watt now.. which looks much more plain but is near silent.
Nice hows the performance with a 920 and a 8800GT? I'm gonna upgrade this November via JNCS Intel X58 motherboard bundle just to save from ordering different sites.
8800gt is this computers weakness actually.. the 920 does HD video editing and rendering with ease, but games did not improve much except that Im also using DDR3 memory so that might add a few FPS. I had a good processor before and it wasnt maxed out unless I was capturing video within FRAPS.
The CPU cooler is stock.. I only plan to overclock to 3.0ghz, which this cooler can handle without any problems. I know the V8 and other i7 do a better job though.
I just finished my cable management, which makes this thing look a lot better inside. Thanks for the comment.
i7s are down to $200 at microcenter. Much better mobos are around $200 at newegg. And 99% of us are sitting around with $1000 worth of computer parts with no way to test them...
yeah.. I guess it pays off to be in that first 1000-2000 orders before stock died off... I hope they make it up to everyone with a nice fall deal... maybe a better deal on the SSDs

Anyway, I love the vid : o)
Tomodachimicheut 2 years ago
Coolmaster V8, had no issues with the memory DIMMS. and it looks great. It is tall though.
MtnXfreeride 2 years ago
@MtnXfreeride
Thanks a Million! I'm gonna get the same then : o)
If it's tall it wouldn't be a problem, it goes inside of a Thermaltake Armor Bigtower. As long as the cooler doesn't touch the DIMMs.

i'm new to computer building well as far as... i've never built one yet but i've been reesearching PCs for over 2 years... and what i posted earlier is for the most part what i'm getting was wondering though, i heard for windows 7 you have to have windows XP or Vista installed in order to install windows 7 is this true? if so how do i go about getting it installed because i don't have windows xp lol
yurt101 2 years ago
OK, for the windows 7 upgrade you need XP or Vista installed first. Now, if you are a student, I would recommend buying XP on newegg for $99 and then buying the $40 student win7 pro upgrade.
If you aren't a student, I recommend going to newegg and searching for "Windows 7 system builders" <-- FULL win7 home is $105 and win7 prem. is $140. Catch on these is they can be activated 1 time. So, build a system image after install.. which win7 can do now!

Two 9800GTs have the same performance as two 8800GTs. You should have got a GTX260 or 4850. Anyways, nice board. Ordered the same one two days ago.
AusShinDig 2 years ago
I dont think a 260 is more powerful than 9800gt SLi. If the game supports SLi i bet it would be better, if not then the 260 would win. Those cards have hit a good price point though, and I would love to simplify and make room by having a single card. Dont forget, this video is 5 months old.
MtnXfreeride 2 years ago
Oh, I didn't even think you might've got them cheap. Good idea to hold out for the 300 series, that's what I'm doing too. I would have thought a 260 could match/beat SLi 9800GTs tho. SLi GTs match the old 8800 ultra, which is beaten by the 260/4850
AusShinDig 2 years ago
2 9800GTs? Why? They get identical performance as two 8800GTs. For that price you could have got a single card like a GTX260 Core 216 or an HD 4850 and you would have equal, if not better performance.
AusShinDig 2 years ago
for the price? $50? I dont think so.
I already had one from when I bought a 8800GT back in the day, and BFG upgraded it because it blew. I picked up another 9800gt off ebay for $50. It plays everything I throw at it maxed out smoothly.
Im holding out for the nvidia 300 series.. makes sense right?
MtnXfreeride 2 years ago
what a mess and a 8800 gt ? wit lol
james2k666 2 years ago
it says pre cable management... I wasnt going to make it look clean when I was switching the PSU out for a better one. I have 2 9800GTs in it now.
MtnXfreeride 2 years ago
why do people use the stock cooler its shite.
james2k666 2 years ago
It didnt come in time for this video, it has a coolmaster V8 in it.

you should buy Flight Simulator X for these specs, even if your not interested in planes the visuals will be an absolute treat with those 4 cores running at 3GHz

MtnXfreeride is windows 7 better than xp?
robertkrosl 2 years ago
Yes. it has the features of vista and more but runs smooth like XP.

Crazy speeds!

why are you encoding HD video to WMV? its terrible. you gotta switch to something more modern like H.264.
Remoth000 2 years ago
Wmv are small files. I only use it to upload to YouTube. This video is uploaded as a wmv. It's not noticible from the original file except that my camera does 60fps and I only want 30fps for YouTube

hey did antec buy out rocketfish? because i have the same exact power supply, but its not antec.
kbtwinkietwins 2 years ago

Your experienced opinion appreciated.
videosoulbygregg 2 years ago
You need a raid 0 setup. When editing HD video, it was always choppy and it made it hard to line things up when I was using 1 400GB sata 2 HDD. Uncompressed video files are huge, you need all the speed you can get.
Make sure you have a good graphics card, even something like an 8800GT which go for $70 on ebay makes a huge difference. Also, if you can, get an i7 processor, because it will also have a nice triple channel DDR3 memory setup.
MtnXfreeride 2 years ago
I work at best buy, I see a lot of towers there that are setup for editing - i7 DDR3 and a graphics card, they just need another HDD to raid.
MtnXfreeride 2 years ago
Well raid is not 100% needed but can be helpful. if you dont get SSD's, you need to have HDD with 500GB single platters. The most HDD makers have them, look for that on their site. I know Seagate, WD and Samsung has them, also others i think ;).
But atm 500GB single platters HDD are the fastest on the market, ofcourse SSD's are faster but the price is imo to high for the GB you get.

its called an i7 not 17 ^^

gusPR1 2 years ago
it changed.. ive been upgrading parts since this video.. I have a coolmaster V8 heatsink, 2x9800gt OC+ in SLi also. it outperforms a gtx 285, so its good.
MtnXfreeride 2 years ago
all that money u invested, and u went with a cheaper low end intel board lol, your wiring job sux
2crazy30 2 years ago
It was a combo deal $280 for processor mobo and windows 7 ultimate ( when out). Yeah I didn't do the wiring here b/c I had a new psu coming. I totally agree this board sucks, it's on it's way to intel for an RNA already. I should sell the board when the replacement comes.
MtnXfreeride 2 years ago
What was wrong with the motherboard?
otakuboy124 2 years ago
Plugged in a microphone in the back and it shut off.. Dead mobo.

woah!??!?! how did you overclock the cpu to 3.0ghz with stock cooler?
rsx06 2 years ago
uhh I probably could have gone higher, 3.0Ghz is kind of low I thought.
MtnXfreeride 2 years ago
but hey whats the max you can go up to for stock cooler for intel
rsx06 2 years ago
Dont know on stock, I had my coolmaster V8 come the next day. That does 3.4ghz with no problem.
MtnXfreeride 2 years ago
how do u create the windows 7 boot up disk. i made the disk but nothing happens when i make the computer boot directly from the disk. it says no bootable media.
johnu2008 2 years ago
You definitely work at best buy. How do i know? The retail edge big deal bundle with rocketfish power supply. heheh. just putting mine together now but with the 902 case and a 4850
Slappinbassjay 2 years ago
yup haha.. but i just got rid of that POS rocketfish PSU, it was an older version and it is SOO LOUD I couldnt take it anymore. I have the antec 650watt now.. which looks much more plain but is near silent.
MtnXfreeride 2 years ago
nice!
GearsTony 2 years ago
just one single 4850 works wonders :D
dacasman 2 years ago
ended up buying a second nvidia 8800gt oc off of ebay for $60.. so SLI should be about the same power but cheaper since I already had one card.

With that cpu this guy need's 2 Nvidia 295 that's what i got so far.
badboycoap 2 years ago
Nice hows the performance with a 920 and a 8800GT? I'm gonna upgrade this November via JNCS Intel X58 motherboard bundle just to save from ordering different sites.
Hekynn 2 years ago
8800gt is this computers weakness actually.. the 920 does HD video editing and rendering with ease, but games did not improve much except that Im also using DDR3 memory so that might add a few FPS. I had a good processor before and it wasnt maxed out unless I was capturing video within FRAPS.

Any one know if a good northbridge fan to replace this tiny blue one? Its actually the loudest fan in the case.

hey i got windows 7 too and i down loaded a watermark removal and trail removal too. Just google it. ohhhh nice pc but u do need a better cpu cooler.
cisco760ca 2 years ago
thanks for the watermark info.
The CPU cooler is stock.. I only plan to overclock to 3.0ghz, which this cooler can handle without any problems. I know the V8 and other i7 do a better job though.
I just finished my cable management, which makes this thing look a lot better inside. Thanks for the comment.
MtnXfreeride 2 years ago
Nice PC Dude! Need to work on cable management a bit, but other than that; GREAT JOB!!
marland66 2 years ago
Intel bundle...sigh
i7s are down to $200 at microcenter. Much better mobos are around $200 at newegg. And 99% of us are sitting around with $1000 worth of computer parts with no way to test them...
So much for the "big deal..."
Intranetusa 2 years ago
yeah.. I guess it pays off to be in that first 1000-2000 orders before stock died off... I hope they make it up to everyone with a nice fall deal... maybe a better deal on the SSDs
MtnXfreeride 2 years ago
or some sweet intel graphics cards.. lol

lol, true that. But so far it's that 65k thing for Rockstars only... =/
