I'd watched a lot of horror movies before I finally saw Suspiria - but nothing can prepare you for the assault on the senses this movie throws at you. It so perfectly embodies that feeling of a horrifying, yet at the same time, absolutely intriguing nightmare that you just can't wake up from. It is so relentless at times in it's application of fear but at the same time you know you have to push on to see what happens next. Fantastic work from Argento, and there's really nothing else like it.
Another thing that makes these movies so real is the grooming. Grooming can put something that is thought to be past contemporary. It is very important to exclude unnecessary embelishments of body and face when you are trying to focus on a specific point in this case FEAR. The witches employ you to fear with awe considering there motive for evil is wealth but they turn into crude worshipers implicating there denial of self in the eyes of the devil to get what he has promised.
@luvulngtime2 Your exactly right remakes focus on the money they pay for visuals whereas classics focus on talent. You had to have it back then to make these films. Oh and trust me the makeup artist are all college degreed in theater makeup. Back then you had specialist hired to do fims not just people off the street, not saying that talent cant be found but it takes a creative visualist to spot that out.
Fantastic scene! I personally love Argento's work and find it hard to believe that others find it difficult to comprehend. He is truly a wonderful director of our time. A great director!
On an added note, I think a remake is a bad idea too. As great of an actress Natalie Portman is, I just think it couldn't be done, especially when she so recently starred in Black Swan (another horror movie centered around the world of ballet), the movie is best left as it is.
"scary movies" never scare me anymore. I like this one because of the mystique - the soundtrack, the amazing cinematography (best represented by the opening airport scene - who films like that?!).... none of those things will be present in whatever half-assed potboiler remake they come out with. The plot is already paper-thin to begin with, and no one is watching Suspiria for high-tech fx or brilliant acting. It was Argento's style that made it a classic.
if you haven't seen it, that little kid in the 19th century clothing does nothing the whole film but stand there and look spooky. And no one asks or mentions why he's dressed 100 years out of date.
@indyzephyr Then what is YOUR idea of a scary movie? Frankly, I've seen lots of movies that supposedly were scary, but didn't impress me much--especially more recent ones. When I first saw this one as a teenager, it scared me so bad I almost pissed my pants.
@DandAinTac "Repulsion" is good, but i prefer psychological horror to lots of blood and gore. "Onibaba" has a little bit of both, that's a good one, like a twisted folk tale. "Vengeance is Mine," not exactly a horror movie, more a character study of a murderous sociopath, much like "Henry: Portrait of a Serial Killer," but Japanese. Even things like "I Spit On Your Grave," (the 70's version) and the 70's version of "Last House on the Left," I found more effective and frightening than Suspiria
I've watched the entire movie twice, and I still haven't figured out who the actual killer was. Sure, the witches are running the show, and they may have even used their spells to compel someone to do the dirty work, but who was the actual knife-wielder? Can anyone tell me?
@radioactivestd This seems to fit the evidence--the weird hand with feminine nails yet hairy masculine arms, the weird eyes, the way it got to her even high up on an upper level window, and my conviction that it wasn't the witches' style to do this sort of dirty work personally. I thought though, that they merely had one of their creepy servants do the deed, perhaps under enthrallment. Tell me--did you figure it out from these clues or from something else in the movie?
@DandAinTac Witches aren't generally known for being slashers like, Jason. More or less they kill by inflicting curses summoning devils. You know; basic witch shit.
@radioactivestd Yes, exactly, which is why I just couldn't accept that it was Markos herself, which is what someone else suggested. But I couldn't remember anywhere in the movie where it explained who (or what) actually did the knife work.

Apparently nobody learned after Halloween was ruined not to ever do another remake. I think there should be other copyright laws put into place because how the hell can you remake a Masterpiece like Suspiria? and with Natalie Portman... *Kills Self*
Here's what this 42 year-old mom suggests if I may: The original Tales from the Crypt movie, Seizure, Hush Hush Sweet Charlotte, and Black Sabbath/trilogy. Other viewers may want to further advise you if my titles are mixed up. There was a movie about Edgar Allan Poe (or based on his work) in the 70s, too. Don't forget Horror Express. I was too young when most of these flicks opened to recall exact titles. you already may have seen them. just my meager opinion
@XTestamentOfYoreX Ya I know what you are saying. Take for an example the original Wicker Man and the remake of the Wicker Man the remake is complete crap in my opinion.
@XTestamentOfYoreX i love remakes, not all are good but some even the directors agree they would of wanted to make the way they are made now especially cause of new techology and bigger budgets. Like I said, not all new remakes are cool , but a lot are, example,, i love dawn of the dead , the old version, but the new one is just ass cool.
If anything, give Argento some money so he can re-edit Mother of Tears and swap out that bimbo who played Lacraemarum for someone with a bit more gravitas.
my scene is when Pat is being stabbed in the heart and then crashes the glass... oniric. I don't know why, the light trough the glass... orange and yellow, the way she falls... the blood, damn, a lot of great scenes... this up there is awesome too...
Suspiria is with out a doubt one of the best looking and sounding films I have ever seen. I have recently heard about a remake. How dare they! Hollywood you have no shame. This is a 'film' not a crap CGI cartoon. Who's gunna do the sound track a bloody rap 'artist'
sod off hollywood your crap. People watch the orignial on a big telly with the sound turned up to 11, never ever watch a remake of Suspiria.
Quite simply fantastic...suspiria is one of all time favourite horror films and Dario Argento is one of my all time favouirte horror film directors...and to top it off this is one of my favouite scenes from this film.
