To help the debate here, I played EMG 81 for like 2 years and then had the blackouts on my 7 strings for a year and you see that it kicked the EMG's ass big time
@nblax41 Lets saturate this review with a lot of reverb, jk, i like the blackouts a lot but what do you think of the x series from emg and as a match do you think they might pair up well, i'm looking for a 60 neck tone and i don't know if any of the duncans sound similar in the neck.
@jacka1996 Sure they can, my ESP has 2 volumes and a tone like your BC and it's fine. They come with diagrams to have them wired for 1 volume and 1 tone, 2 volume 1 tone and even 2 volumes and 2 tones like a Les Paul. There are ways to wire them so they have only a volume as well, or simply an on-off switch. You can go on the Seymour Duncan website and look at them yourself.
@DjentFoxProductions Well I own a set of Blackouts. I think they sound a little less comressed and have a better low end on them, but if you're tuning to drop A you might want the comression of EMGs or look into the Mick Thompson Blackouts which have a tighter bottom and some more gain.
@DjentFoxProductions Well I don't haev any experience with 7 strings but I would say the same characteristics hold true for them as well. They will sound less compressed and will have better low end. I also tune a full step down on my 6 strings and they sound heavy as shit so you should like them.
@codename40 I don't have any experience with Mustain livewires, I know they're lower output than Blackouts, supposed to be an active version of the JB. Guess it will depend on what kind of sound you're looking for. Search around on here for samples to help decide.
@tubescreamermuff My guitar is in D standard or drop C at all times, no need for a hotter pickup. You might as well just get an 81 if you're going to use the AHB-2, thats what it was designed for after all. These things have all the gain you need, anything else just gets fuzzy or too compressed.
@CiviC092 Sorry man, but first off EMG is a brand, while the blackout is just one individual pickup from another company. Secondly, the Blackout is often compared with the EMG 81, and they are two very different pickups. Neither is better than the other. It's a matter of which that people prefer
Meh, wish that son of a bitch would cut back on the fucking reverb, it's hard to discern articulation through all of that extra bs he threw on top of it
Oh my God that guitar is beautiful... I would trade my 08 American Standard Strat w/ Custom Shop pickups for it right this second, if Paul would accept the offer. His playing... I'd take that, too.
Pick-ups are definatly hot and colorful but that's to much ceramic. But if you want to play metal go emg. If not and your into alternative or rock these are a good choise. Blues players this is not for you.
Depends. Blackouts are going to have a higher output but they wont color the tone of your guitar. A JB won't be as hot and it colors your tone, but you can get good clans out fo it. What kind of ampa re you running through?
I'm thinking about getting some Seymour Duncan Blackouts, but I kinda want to use bridge Blackouts in the neck [because they are ceramic and mahogany bodied guitars hate alnico V in their neck slots] with a Blackout Metal in the bridge.
Anyone here think this will not work at all [as in the AHB-1b being too high output for the neck]? Any experiences would be gladly appreciated.
The battery will fit inside the control cavity, it doesnt take up much room. As for installing them, they go in just like any other pickup, and they come with wiring diagrams as well that explain how to do it.
Blackout Metal can only be used in the bridge, its alot higher output so it can't do clean tones at all. As for Blackouts vs EMGs, its up to you. If you want a more compressed tone, go with EMG, if not, Blackouts are your best bet
It can be done, but it requires alot of work, wiring a mini switch to change the signal going to the output jack, etc. You can message me about it, I'll try to find a wiring diagram if you want to go through with it

The only thing I don't like about him is, he never plays death metal or anything. When he plays metal, it's just the typical metallica/megadeth type riffs. I wish he would play some more technical death metal stuff so I could hear what they sound like for that.
He doesnt really have the chance to, he's only supposed to give a general idea ot the tone at different gain levels. Id be all for death metal in the examples, but they just dont really care how technical or badass the riffs are
hell yea, i thought i was the only person left alive who owned a richard z signature, haha. probably the worst-selling esp signature of all time, but quite a looker
God I love the blackouts, I have been considering getting the new Ibanez MBM2 and putting one of these in the bridge(but i'd leave the 60 in the neck, I love the emg 60's crisp cleans)

@CalzNL Not sure, if you look that up on here you could probably find some videos of someone with them in an Ibanez.

Blackout Metal can only be used in the bridge, its alot higher output so it can't do clean tones at all. As for Blackouts vs EMGs, its up to you. If you want a more compressed tone, go with EMG, if not, Blackouts are your best bet
