It reached its peak in popularity during the Mexican Revolution when the lyrics were changed to represent the political struggles going on. The marijuana version has nothing to do with the revolution and has everything to do with drug culture. It is yet another spin on the lyrics to suit the current statement. There is no hard evidence of the original lyrics.
