Permaculture was designed in Australia initially to meet the needs of the generally arid climate there. If you're interested, look into Bill Mollison and David Holmgren who were the creators of the system. Also, there's a video on youtube about David Holmgren called "Greening the Desert" which shows how he created a productive system in the middle of an Israeli dessert.
@Lucretia2222 FYI "Greening the Desert" was a documentary on Geoffrey Lawton's work in Jordan not David Homgren. :) Both gentlemen have a wealth of knowledge to share.
@silentthriller I dont think Permaculture has "invented" anything new, what it does is look at nature and cultures world wide, to find what works best, in a sustainable way and with the least amount of effort. If people are living in deserts, its assumed they must already have a source of water, with permaculture, they could use more efficient techniques that makes better use of what little water they have. do a search for permaculturemedia d (o) t blogspot d (o) t, c0m everything there

@Lucretia2222 That wasn't David Holmgren in Jordan. That was Geoff Lawton. Awesome permaculturist also.
