now in 2011, after reading some of the forums and people struggling to even charge it, this has ended been a bad designed computer and is going the TouchPad route.
This is pretty sweet! I would totally buy this if Ubuntu had better touch-screen support and if the device had a better processor. Heck, if it had all that and some good games, I'd pay 200 bucks more!
@metalx1000 what i'm really hoping for is an upgrade the duel core 2Ghz arm cortex a9, or at least the 900Mhz variant. Since i'm dreaming throw in a mali gpu. That would be too good to be true though.
What a let down, I placed an order for one of these, I was told that it would take two months to deliver. I emailed AI a week before delivery was due and was told that they had suspended production until summer when they would also announce their "craziest innovation". They never notified me of this change of plan. To anyone thinking of buying one of these, forget it, wait a few months something else is sure to be released.
Well done Gregoire, you know how to p*ss of your prospective customers!

@chris978820: yeah, that just seems like a bad idea. but I've seen another video where they stick it on the door and slam the door a few time and it stays. I still would be hesitant to do it myself.
maybe. But it (HP Journada) ran windows CE which has the functionality of a normal computer with, tons of compatability issues like any ARM based devices should have.
Plus, Any laptop that runs on ARM will automatically have tons of compatability issues so there's not much diffeence between the hp journada and these "new" laptops.
The only main difference is the power of the new hardware which, isn't an excuse to call an older handheld pc a "Palm-pc crossbreed".
Windows CE is far from having the normal functions of a laptop.
And Linux Has been running on ARM Processors for years.
The only compatibility issues you should have with running on an ARM processor is if your programs are not compiled for an ARM processor. You don't really have this problem with Linux because pretty much any open-source program can be recompiled for an ARM Processor and if you are using Debian all the programs in the repose are already ARM compiled.
I have Debian running on my phone with an ARM Processor with no problems as long as the program can run on 600MHz and 256 RAM (768 MB virtual memory).
The Problem would be if you are trying to run Windows (which can't run on an ARM other then CE or Mobile), then you would still have the problem of all the proprietary vendors having to spend the time and money to recompile there software for ARM.
Just one of many reasons why Open-Source beats out Closed.
open source certainly will never be as professional as closed though and no one will take open source seriously for buisness.
Take Linux, the most popular open source OS. It may be popular, but how many companies run linux on their computers? Few to none. Most runs mac or windows....unless they're so poor that they can't afford a closed OS.
I'm hoping you are joking. Linux is used in the business wold then any other OS. Google for example. 75% of web-servers. Walk into any Home Depot or Lowes and look at there computer. Only small businesses that don't know much about computers use windows. I can tell that you come from a windows world because you talk about CE like it's useful. Linux is the most used OS for devices and Servers.
@WatchCharmedOnline So what? In best case this is a statistic about Desktop-Ps, wich is absolutely irrelevant to the server-market. Most Servers are running on Linux oder Unix-like Systems, MS has the biggest share at the Desktopmarket, but not on the server-market.
Questions for anyone who already got one: Can i take notes and sketches diectly using a stylus like i would do with an ordinary piece of paper? does the battery really lasts 10hrs? Can anyone confirm? I am thinking to use one for educational purposes. It would be so convenient if instead of carriyng all my books and notepads every day i would only carry this!!! This is just too good to be true!!!!!
I don't have one, yet. But, as far as take notes and sketches that would just be a software thing. And there are plenty of programs out there for drawing. When it comes to touch screens just remember, it's just like a mouse. If you can draw in a program with a mouse, you can draw in it with a touch screen.
I was more interested in the accuracy and the sensitivity of the touchscreen. I have used touchscreens that were perfect for handwriting and others that you had to press very hard on the screen to draw a continuous line. If anyone has a touchbook could you make a video demonstrating the capability of the it in handwriting?
I know you don't know what you're talking about because you say you would use Windows XP. A sure sign you don't know much about computers. Beagleboards are great. Just because Microsoft has poor programmers and there OS is so poorly designed that it takes up 20GB of space, yet can barely do anything out of the box, doesn't mean that this hardware is bad. You can always use Windows CE.
this thing sucks. its just a beagleboard with a usb adapter in a thick ugly shell. for 300 bucks id rather get a eeepc 1000 that has a 1.6ghz cpu,1gb ram,160gb hard drive and 7 hour battery life and windows xp.
I have also pre-ordered and have not heard from them yet. I check daily. You can qualify your pre-order on their site, which helps determine your place in line, though they say for the most part they're going by date of pre-order.
What? Did always innovating change their minds or something? This is getting annoying now, I heard they were going to start shipping from may, it's now august, by the time they finally ship it something better will be out or I won't even want it anymore.
Very beautiful case, I have been use my Fujitsu 12" touch screen notebook for years now. So, the technology is not new, but the design has a new twist to it, and I love the exterior. I might trade it up, but I didn't see the webcam on this unit, am I missing something?
Not quite clear yet. They said that they would no support it. But as far as hardware goes, only time will tell. We have to wait until its released, see if someone can figure out a nice little code to add the capability.
Nope. The CEO stated on his website that there's no point because multitouch is mainly used for zooming in and out on images, and since this screen is fairly large, there won't be as much need for that.
where can I get one?? This is awesome!

I don't know if they are the first, because I know a lot of people are working on ARM laptops.
But the HP Journada was not quite a Laptop.
It was more like a palm pilot and a netbook had a kid.

Let me give you some statistical data.
Copied directly from a research by Market Share 2009.
Windows72.8 %
Mac 21.7 %
Linux
3.1 %
Mobile
2.4 %
Also, most web servers prefers to use windows 2000 adv server/windows 2008/etc rather than linux (Though linux isn't that bad).
