Using the Internet is a great way to learn guitar. Unfortunately my Internet was cut off for six month during this time I was forced to learn by ear. It's only now that I'm back on the net that I realise how much transcribing accelerates ones understanding of music.
4:07-4:30 so true. It seems like many different songs I try to learn are all different tunings. Capos help some for sure, but I wish I had about 20 guitars all set with different tunings because there are so many used out there. This can get annoying. Also a lot of studio work is layered and sometimes it can be difficult to decipher this.
Should you be selective about the music that you transcribe? Does it affect your phrasing in any way that can be undesirable? In a sense, you're fine tuning your ears to pick part certain notes, and you replicate those notes on the fret board.
To anyone who watches this excellent video. Go out and buy the BOSS GUITAR or Bassist trainer. Its a CD/mp3 palyer that slows the music down plus it also removes instrutments so you can Learn that certain part. \m/
Thank you so much for this video! Especially recommending Transcribe; it's a great program. I've even found it makes a very nice "play-along-metronome".
As for me, my first transcribing experience was the complete Ramones self titled album. First it was hard sometimes, but it gave me a push and gave me some benefits later on. So, you guys who start transcribing should check out the Ramones. Good luck!
There are but seven notes in a scale, most song staying with in a scale. Not a master but you must learn one scale it is major. Let's start at the very beginning A very good place to start. Do-re-mi-fa-so-la-ti It far more than the silly song you may think you hear. Doe, a deer, a female deer Ray, a drop of golden sun Me, a name I call myself Far, a long, long way to run Sew, a needle pulling thread La, a note to follow Sew Tea, a drink with jam and bread That will bring us back to Do EASY
But Andrew, the distortion or any such effects on electric guitar would just 'blur' my perception while hearing. How could i distinguish which string one's playing?
@guillotinedeath i could suggest Audacity, you could slow down the tempo while editing. a bit of ruckuss since the data would be saved as .wav (it consumes larger area of your HDD). A comparison of this would be Garageband, same method, to import the mp3 file you'd like to learn, then drop the tempo (e.g: set your project tempo to 180, import the file, then drop it to 100).
Simple one? Just use playspeed setting on windows media player.
Transcribe is fscking great. This piece of software gave me so much, it's hard to tell just how much. Plus it runs natively on my platform of choice (Linux).
Andrew, this is a little bit beside the subject, but do you have advice on how to separate vocal harmony parts? I already know about intervals and how they sound together, but the speed and the overall abundance of notes at any given moment often trips me up. One of my favourite bands is the Posies, and they use vocal harmonies similar to the Beatles or Simon and Garfunkel, i.e. the two parts sound almost inseparable. Any tips for how to 'decipher' what they are doing?
@VicRoseMusic Totally agree with VicRoseMusic, there are tons of billions of beginner videos on youtube and other places to learn each technique and basics. But it's hard to find someone explaining more advanced stuff with such simplicity as Andrew.
Also, I just started using trainear.com a little browser based program that is meant to help in ear training, I was wondering if this is something you would recommend.
Andrew, thanks for the lesson. I seem to have problems transcribing chords (even very simple open chords) but I can transcribe blues licks and riffs pretty well. How would I go about practicing to transcribe chords also it really throws me off when they use a capo. Thanks!
I have made a selection of them, check my site. They'll also be more in the future too. Hope you'll stay tuned in to the channel. Also, I am planning a beginner course right now too. Hope you'll keep checking in through the weeks ahead.
@creativeguitarstudio I expressed myself wrongly, I actually meant intermediate, not beginner because I'm no beginner, and I'd hate to see beginner videos here... I just would like the base to understand these more advanced videos :(
