I went to go see the USS Texas last year after seeing San Jacinto battlefield next to it. Definitley an amazing ship, you can walk inside almost the whole ship.
It's amazing to think that with all of the time, money, effort, and political wrangling that so many countries went through to build and acquire dreadnoughts during the 1910's, Texas is the only one left.
I was fortunate enough to score two internships out at San Jacinto Battleground/Battleship TEXAS SHS. I actually got to work on her and go over every foot of her Inside and out. If anyone is in the Houston area I suggest that you go out and visit the site its pretty spectacular. For any info you can call (281) 479-2431.
Thankfully the USS Texas will have a full dry berth within the next few years to keep it safe from the horribly corrosive Gulf Coast water. It'd be cool if the dock was finished by 3/12/14 for its 100th birthday, but it'll more than likely be 2017.
Texas was and still is one good ship. I cant believ the brits never kept even the king george. They should have at least kept one revenge class or maby the war spite. Anyways god bless America.
its a shame to see such beauiful military pieces go to waste like these battle ships i say our newer ones slap huge cannons like the texas and arizina while still addind missiles
listen there not going to waste they did there part now we have subs that could sink 100 of those anyways those are now usles and last you cat take tours dumb ass
you dont even know what the fuck your talking about fool back in the vietnam and korean war when jet fighters came out thet thought the dogfighting days was over your justsome dumb ass mother fucker that cant really think of a tactical power and advantage
truth is we neede everythin we can get our hands on power is victory in war
because they'd cost too much to maintain and operate =( thats why we stopped using them in the first place, just too expensive. that couldve been changed if someone wouldve just put nuclear reactors on them in place of the diesel fuel and maybe take out some of the heavy weapons to be replaced by missiles. if those 2 things were done i bet the battleship would still be in service and not rusting away in ghost fleets
cruise missiles are also far more expensive and would take many many times more of them to come any where close to the devastating punch battkleships carry. Why do you think the US Navy still has two of the Iowas on stand by even though they are musuem ships.
They aren't "retired" they are on "loan" for use as musuem ships but are subject to being called up at any time. Unlike other msusuem ships like the USS Alabama which has part of it's turrent ring cut away to revel its workings etc, these ships can not be modified in any way that could impact a "speedy" recall to duty.
I love the battleships too, but in a modern fight a battleship with big guns are not match for a small destroyer with missiles that can be launch at WAY farther distance and highly accurate.
while im not quite sure about todays missiles, when the Iowas were modernized in the mid 80's, there was no cruise missile that could do serious damage, it required about 20 missiles into the superstructure just to slow her down.
@youtubbinh Not true if it's an IOWA class battleship. First they were refurbished to carry two types of cruise missiles. Second they're faster and much tougher than any destroyer. 3rd, their guns are far more powerful within range than a destroyers missiles. The most modern destroyer would have no chance against an IOWA. None.
i don't think so. maybe stealth will help above water but you syill have to propel yourself through the water and sonar kan pick you up.also as soon as you bring guns to bear radar can pick you up.missiles could be an answer but you can fire those from a sub as well.
awesome ship, haven't been on her yet but hopefully it wont be long. the dry berthing will be great for the ship, but i think she looks best in the water, where she belongs
i would love to see this ship all brit battleships were scraped by 1960 tragic,we only have the caroline a cruiser last ship that fought at jutland still afloat but its no dreadnought, hope you get the money to sort the hull, best regards.
Roaklin stated that the Texas hull was rotted away. Actually the Texas was drydocked some years ago where most of the bottom was replated at a cost of 11 million dollars. She could still have rust problems and that is why money is being raised to dry berth her. She will be safe then but will look funny not being in the water any longer.
Shit, thats amazing, that this was built back in 1912, and survived 2 world wars, while a certain liner of the same vintage couldn't get through its first voyage.
unfortunately she is not doing great. Latest hull soundings put thickness in some places to 1/16th of an inch. She needs to be put into a permanent dry birth and soon...problem is, Texas Parks and Wildlife is way underfunded and the Gov. Rick Perry won't give them the money to do what needs to be done to save THE LAST of the New York class dreadnought battleships...Its sad, but after almost 100 years, I think we are gonna lose her to the elements this time.
I checked the website for the USS TEXAS. They have the money. They are now trying to secure a drydock to do the nessasary repairs. One suitable that is.
BUB, not sure what website you checked, but that info is a little outdated I am sure. The closest drydock that is suitable is in Louisiana...and it her current state, it is doubtful that she would be able to make that trip. There has been talk of moving her up the bayou to improve her current place for a permanent dry birth or to keep her in place and create a gravel dry birth.
Well, I guess the state of Texas is as behind on their web site as they are on the maintanance of this grand old lady. They should be more responsible for a one of a kind like this. She is the last remaining WWI Battleship afloat.
you can thank our governor for that...the money is there, but he doesn't want to give it to the parks department because he doesn't think that they will "spend it wisely..." All of the state parks are in disrepair thanks to Rick Perry.
Bad news. The shipyard that did the repairs in 1988 is closed. USS Texas would have to be towed to Mobile, Alabama in order to find facilities that can handle her. I hope funding can be found that will allow for a facility to be built that will get USS Texas out of the water permanently by resting her on keel blocks.

20 missles to slow down the Iowa? Well, imagine how many it would have taken to slow the Montana had it been built
frankydman 2 years ago
actualy, I made a mistake, It was 6 silkworm missiles, not 20, but the hull was impervious to them.
