@teja89max No, impossible. Homemade laser from DVD (red laser) can burn only dark plastic. Homemade laser from BlueRay (blu laser) can burn any color of plastic, foam and paper. In both cases the productivity is low: only few mm/sec. To vaporize copper on a PCB it would take an enormous energy. It's absoluty out of range for a hobbist.
@didaloca Really? The computer desk... That is an amazing homemade effort of a precision piece of equipment that took some huge and rare talent to build but you like the recycled computer desk best did you. Ok, that's good and green of you.
@kurtee3 The G-Code M03 and M05 will turn an output on and off, from there hook a solid state relay with an input voltage of 3-30V to the printer port assigned pins to activate a 120V relay that can turn the laser on and off, or activate a shutter actuated by a solenoid.
This particular laser is something around 240mW (measured). It can't cut white paper, but if it's black or grey, then it can. BluRay diodes can be much stronger (diode from 12x writer can give even 500mW), but the burning abilities depends also on the burned material.
Yes, I'm controlling it with parallel port. You should read something about CNC. There are a lot of programs for controlling CNC machines. I'm using Mach3. There's also some kind of standard, called G-code, for describing the machine moves. Yes, stepper motor drivers (at least two for X and Y) are needed.
cool, i have been looking around for a while for a free program that you can manually program. or if its possible to have some sort of drawing software (like paint) that you could draw the image you wish to etch/cut (to scale) and it would automatically follow the pattern drawn. do you know if there is such a thing?
There are programs that converts .bmp files to g-code. However, I couldn't find any that would satisfy me so I wrote my own :P You can download it at c4r0(dot)skrzynka(dot)org(slash)gcode
There are many kinds of stepper motor drivers. Mach3 works only with drivers that have step/dir inputs. The simplest driver of this kind (I'm using it) is based on two ICs: L297 and L298.
how strong was that laser, and where would i get it, for how much...+kan i just use a CD copier laser...the ones in the CD disce thing....oh, and cool that you can speak like all languiges!
The laser was 240mW and it was from 20x DVD-RW drive. Yes, you can use also a CD-RW infrared laser, though it would be max 100mW. But for engraving in black plastic like in this video it's enough.
Digital cameras can see infrared. You can use even cellphone camera. But there is one thing - If laser diode emmits light it doesn't mean that it works ok. It may be broken and act like ordinary LED dide.
my school has one of thous...and as far as i know they paid like 5000 euro, or more for it...but it burnd down... :'( was preaty awsome, hey, and grait work man, this laser is awsome!

If they really are 400mW and you focus it properly, then probably yes. But like I said, it depends on the burned material too.

PS. na maila wyslalem Ci pare dni temu kilka pytań, możesz juz nie odpowiadać bo spalila mi się dioda.
