@theologico1 That and it's often those who most deserve power, that never ask for it. I don't think Rick would ever want to run - and I'm pretty sure MPs make more money than he does, the higher-ups anyway. No, I think he prefers to comment on politicians, and stay as "one of us", the citizens of Canada.
You're assuming the best MPs are motivated by a pension - versus the chance to take things in the right direction. ...You know, down South, Ron Paul gave back his pension :)
a) Plenty of other jobs you have to travel a lot for without this bonus.
b) MPs make a great salary for the 6 years they are there AND
c) End with great experience on their resume! Sure, there are some businesses who won't hire a Conservative or a Liberal or an NDP or a Green, but there are plenty that will hire you based on your stated political affiliations.
@Quintars we simply cant afford to be a welfare state, if I have to save my own money and not rely on gov. pensions so my kids can inherit a country without unsustainable debt, then Im willing to not be selfish and hold my own as I should.
Well Rick, I would have to disagree, cuz we are paying now for top people and look at the state of the finances in this country. The problem is they qualify way too early.Shouldnt be able to qualify until you have at least 12 yrs in office, that way you would have to work for your pension. Work for the people that elected you! As far as traveling to Ottawa and your leaving your family behind , alot of do that all the time when working to keep our familys fed.Iworked for years in the oil industry
and of course you don't have any say in the CPP money coming off your cheque, if you never make it to retirement age, tough nuts, where does your CPP money go? Sure as fuck isn't passed onto next of kin
Actually a percentage is. If you die your wife would get =/- 60% of the CPP you would have received for the rest of your life. I receive a survivors benefit from CPP every month now that my wife has passed. I know it's not all of it but at least it is something.
Canadian Pensions are invested on the stock market with the top weapons maufacturers in the world including Lockheed Martin, Raytheon aswell as Cigarette makers and sweatshops for WalMart The Board in charge basically doesn't give a shit.
This is a problem. I myself am just starting out as a teacher. While in Teacher's College someone made us all aware that the Ontario Teachers Pension is invested in whatever is most profitable. They actually state that they take no environmental or moral facts into account when investing. Sure I would like them to reconsider and invest in a more moral avenue, but the pension is being crushed under the weight of the massive amount of retired teachers.
Canadians when voting need to ignore the clever marketing tactics and elect the local MP that merits the position and had the largest positive impact on their community!
@alexkillby Precisely. What annoys me about political commercials the most is the attack ads. I don't want to hear why this other guy isn't fit for the position. I don't want to hear what this guy has done in the past for us already. I want to hear what you are offering to benefit the future of Canada! That's how a political ad should be.
It's a fallacy to assume the only way to attract good MPs is to pay an arm and a leg for them. High MP salaries separate parliamentarians from the struggles of the average Canadian income. Being a member of parliament is supposed to be public service, so let's peg their salaries to the average Canadian income. Those who want more will have more incentive to find ways for all to prosper.
A kid I worked with this summer is in PoliSci at Carleton. At 20, this was his first job ever. I asked him why he wanted to go into politics and his response? I have empathy for people. I told him to quit school, go travel for five years and experience something to feel empathetic about. His response, 'My parents won't pay for it.'

Maybe I'm just old fashioned but I would reply that a truly good MP wouldn't care about the pension or the paycheck. They would simply want to serve their country even if it did cause harm to other aspects of their life.
@NoGoodHandlesLeft Well I mostly agree with you that MP shouldn't be worrying about their paycheck, to some extent, every adult that has a family is going to want a good paycheck. Besides that though, their pensions are ridiculous.

I think Rick Mercer is going senile. Thinking there are good MPs and paying more will attract better MPs instead of the corrupt stupid MPs that are good at winning popularity contests.
