I think the shows gets better an better as the series goes on, season 3 and 4 are incredible, but i like a lot of the banter and comic relief in the first few seasons that you don't get as much later on. Pilot was good, but i stopped watching after the first season. For a zombie based show they are way to concerned with family and internal human drama issues. I mean there is so much inner family and community Drama with people, you would almost forget that there is a fucking zombie apocalypse. Then again thats just my opinion.
