  • I just love her choice of tempo and dynamics! Martha is an amazing artist.

  • @laiholapso I am neither stupid, nor superficial. And before I judge a musician in such a harsh way like I did here, please be sure that I took the time to listen to several of her recordings. It gives me absolutely NO pleasure to criticise someone like that. But as someone who comes from a family of classical musicians, sorry, that's the way her music sounds to me. Please check out SIMONE DINNERSTEIN ! She feels, understands and loves every tone in Bach's music, showing how full of life it is

  • Sorry, but her playing is... sh*t. To me, even the spaces between single notes sound irregular. And I` m not talking about the general tempo - she doesn't feel the "spaces", so the melodies don't flow. In german you say: "es klingt holzig" wich means that it sounds "wooden" / "holzig", like walking with wooden legs. Sorry, I think Bach wouldn't have been very pleased by her playing...

  • @Musicsson how dumb must you be to judge a person by one performance

  • Why such raves for this? It's so simple I could play it with one finger.

  • Magnificient! Great heart, rhythmic pulse, and lyricism!!

  • Beau et cristallin, merci ♥

  • Fascinante!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Wooow Martha , Keep going <3

    Thank you Martha

    A littel word from Denmark

I love to play my self,,

  • What I love is Argerich seems to play with this Heart beat, its pulsing, exactly how I feel Bach would of loved it. This will sound good 10, 20, 50 years from now. Got that feeling.

  • Pure. Heart. Science. She makes the piano sound like there's a compressor over it, all the voicings are so clear!

  • One of my all time favorites. I used to listen to it when I was twelve or so and still listen to it almost 30 years later. You just never get bored from it. Argerich has a very intelligent way of playing Bach, strong and firm when needed, small and intimate when necessary. Very powerfull and convincing performance.

  • Superb.TY canadapisces for sharing and kiwibd for posting

  • This is song is soooo good! I can't get enough of it! Incredible composition, magnificent pianist.

  • I just started to play this :)))

  • @Carlosrenti WELL DONE :D I'M HAPPY FOR YOU! ME!~

  • Great! She really channels Bach.

  • I'm usually a fan of Gould's but he massacres this piece, at least in the version that is posted on youtube: it's too fast, superficial, and the phrasing is wrong (oddly, for Glenn, too much legato). Hewitt's is slow and plodding. Schnabel has the right tempo but his phrasing is downright eccentric. For me, the acid test is the 2nd fugue starting at 2:30, which properly played is ethereal and one of the great moments in all of music. Argerich gets it (almost) right.

  • @MrBrobdingnagian Agreed

  • - Why try to estimate whitch one is better?

    - Why not trying to listen each one of them for his own spirit?

I listen currently each one for his own emotion. Music is an emotional language. Gould in his play - may seem particular with his own sound. If you listen Goldberg's Variations it is a similar sound, if we compare to other players.

Martha's sound seem to me as spectacular, musical and more emotionnal.

Each one speak to you in his own way.

  • @babamoto you're all wet!!!!!!gould is the best interpreter of Bach by farrrrrr!!!!!!

you don't know shit about Bach's music. you're a punk with no musical knowledge.stay away from here punk !!!!!

  • Wow - you can almost hear her playing it as if on the harpsichord when she gets to the 2nd minute or so .... lovely interpretation.

  • She's completely at one with this, as with the Brahms rhapsody in G. Beautifully natural & flowing - in the groove

  • I never understood why some people cannot enjoy many different interpretations and always have to decide which one is the best. If there is really A BEST ONE, we should not have so many artists performing the same piece. Only one would do it.

Also each person has his/her own taste, and what it is good for one it is bad for another. What makes anyone SO EXTRAORDINARY to be able to make the ultimate decision that it is the BEST? What an arrogance!!!!

  • @AnaMTrenchiBottazzi

yes, bach has room for gould AND argerich for example.

  • @AnaMTrenchiBottazzi Then why bother with the olympics at all?

  • @AnaMTrenchiBottazzi If the call someone the best, they don't claim to jugde objectively. They just are overwhelmed, their hearts are brimming over.

  • Gould does not even come close Martha as a Bach interpreter.

  • @bababamoto I agree! Gould's interpretation's of Bach are so dry in comparison to Martha's! however I did think he was the best interpreter of bach on the piano before I heard Martha playing him!

  • Argerich's performance tells me If modern piano existed in Bach's era, Bach would go beyond him.

  • imo bach is second only to beethoven in terms of codas. so unique, so concise, so perfect

  • Musical interpretations are as different as we human beings are different, we have to learn how to accept these wonderful differences. What it is quite difficult is to learn how to be as positive and objective as our possibilities allow.

  • best pianist ever

  • wow

  • Great.

  • Bach as it is

  • This is so different from Gould's. Love both versions.

  • Comment removed

  • @YinziTra While different from Goulds its also very similar in when playing Bach her fingers are doing that bouncy sort of fast release after she strikes the key as Glenn Gould also has the style. It gives the performance a sort of "harpsicord" flavour. To me it sounds like similar technique but Goulds is more dead on in its accuracty and hers has a little more romance to it.

  • An unassuming artist with love for the music and tremendous talent.

  • She has a distinct nuance and approach to this piece in contrast to Goulds more imposing rendition. Flawless, but more imposing. Both excellent in their own right. Just a nuance, makes this rendition different and equally excellent. Any berating is inflated ego...

  • @cosmos680 Certainly not just a nuance!!! Both of them play with very different styles and character.

  • great Matha Argerich ...

  • She is a marvelous pianist...has been for years!

  • wow . . . she's AMAZING

  • musical perfection.

  • I can't stop listening to this ! ^^

  • Bach is simply the greatest ever.

  • @jsnauwaert :D!!! Yeah Bach en mi corazón

  • @jsnauwaert he is Good, but y is best the great Dietrich Buxtehude ha :D

  • Angela Hewitt is another who superbly embodies Bach. Her rendition of BWV 911 is markedly different from Gould's and Argerich's... all three are superb.

  • rivetting!

  • She just understands bach so well, it scares me.

  • I must say, I am very impressed with this reading. Very musical, and full of passion.

  • just....perfect....Bach+Argerich!!

  • this huh very shiok

  • Sencillamente Maravilloso!!

  • Just genial

  • Anyone else notice her awesome necklace in the first photo?

    And yeah she's more interesting.

  • This is infinitely more enjoyable to listen to than Glen Gould because you don't have to hear his infernal humming over it.

  • I happen to thoroughly enjoy Glenn Gould's work, and think he had one of the greatest musical minds in human history. But that doesn't mean I'm opposed to Martha Argerich's style playing Bach. Martha plays differently from Gould, but so what? Her performance here is spectacular. You could say you prefer Glenn or Martha over the other, or don't like this performance for whatever reason, but saying she's "bad" or implying she could use your guidance understanding baroque music is indefensible.

  • @beakt I couldn't agree more, and in fact would insist, categorically, that Argerich is the only pianist -without anyone else even resembling what might momentarily be mistaken as an exception- who plays Bach on the piano anywhere near as well as Gould.

When it comes to Bach, Gould and Argerich divide the world between them; there is no third.

  • @BelieveYourLies i wont belived youre lies

  • @beakt surely Bach and other composers had greater musical minds in history than performers?

  • @beakt Wow! Who said Argerich could use their guidance? Someone needs a major reality check! Unbelievable! Also,I find it funny how so many people think Gould is the paradigm of Bach interpretation, when although he was a genius, and a brilliant pianist, his interpretations are extremely unique and unorthodox. That being said, to say that he is the only one who did it "right" is to say that everyone else is wrong, in that no one else plays or played like he did.

  • @beakt -Agreed.

  • @beakt -That and being totally ridiculous. She did not take a back seat to anyone-period. She is indeed the greatest living classical pianist. There exist only 2 or 3 others that even compare.

  • @beakt yes i agree two different styles and who's to say ones better than the other but both good it dosn't always have to be a contest

  • Well albeit all the eulogic comments I see below, I do not rate that interpretation high.

  • Wow, beautiful playing.

  • She is great! She has all the strength, fire, and passion needed to play Bach.

  • oh I can´t get enough of this composition. when I heard this I started to like and finaly play Bach.

  • Stop "philosophying", instead enjoy Bach's Godly music, one of the most complex, yet beautiful ! And of course Mme. Argerich's flawless performance !

  • amazing clarity! Martha manages to have the piano sound like a harpshichord at times, when she interprets Bach.

  • super in love with the accent on 3:17 LH!!

  • Wow we are so blessed to have Bach and Argerich.

  • I wish I was Martha.or atlaest played a bit like her.

  • Excellent, but one can easily hear the difference (rubuto and dynamics) between a romantic pianist such as Martha, as opposed to a specialist such as Gould.

  • @jsbachbwv543 Oh, so you think there's an opposition, between "romantic" and "specialist" ? Personally I can't conceive things like that...

  • Ooh takes my breath away!

  • Why do people get so ANGRY here?

  • @angietihi becuase this is the safest place in which to vent their anger!

  • What can we say?..........wonderful?......perfect?.......lets just say if were not in heaven by time it ends, well never get there.

  • I think it's spiritually ridiculous and it's iteration is ludicrous for people to think she is all technique, and no brains.

  • I wish i could play like her . that never happens

  • Martha haces erutar flamas y flores musicales del piano. Los compositores tienen verguenza de tanta belleza

  • @sagrisa ü

  • genia genia genia genia!!!!!!!!

  • they say that MArgerich´s skills eroded and that her great talent wasted away too soon . at mid-life.

I don´t know about that but when she was sifty or so she was clearly past it.

Still who´s complaining , she started recording and performing pretty young

  • @Waldemar: What a wonderfully succinct comment, void of any useful elucidations. On par with the classic "lol this sucks!1", at least you didn't use ALL CAPS.

  • of your world, maybe

  • @WaldemarKoszlowsky : please, get over your fustration ,it's nothing wrong to hear a legendary, unique pianist , not only the greatest alive but perhaps the greatest ever, and feel such an anger, because you know that you are zillions of degrees below her . I would like to hear you playing the easiest little piece and start laughing at you : it's the only thing you deserve ! !

  • I love argerich. But note she has a very distinctive slightly forward tempo and attack, she plays very aggressively with great contrast in dynamics between the voices. That's why her intepretation is so good, but it's also not the way bach is standardly played (e.g. by her teacher Gulda or by Schiff) . It's a typically unique Argerich interpretation

  • Martha's playing is just divine!

  • oh my God, wonderfull piece and performance

  • cok iyi bir performans , cok seviyoruz kendisini

  • What a beautiful recording.

  • Her Bach record is one of my favorites in my collection. Find the whole thing and buy it. I only know of the one recording.

  • ah i should do that:) thanks

  • Her piano has the wonderful harmony between technique and sentiments. Kissin used to be my favourite but he's sometimes a bit too hard, although his playing is still so marvellous.... Argerich just has it all for me.

  • Splendid!!

  • I LOVE YOU MARTHA YOU ARE MY NEW LOVE

  • i love her d,, she is my new idol

  • she just retired you know

  • LA MAS GRANDE PIANISTA DEL MUNDO

  • As always, JUST BRILLIANT. No wonder: her teachers were Michelangeli and Gulda, for crying out loud!

  • genialne!!!

  • Martha Argerich: LA PERFECTION!

  • pro

  • wonderfullllllllllll

  • 'd like to hear it perforned by Bach

  • who wouldn't?

  • Top Notch

  • She is great.

  • Absolutely amazing overtone and voices at 2:28 -3:30!

    MARTHA GOD BLESS YOU!

  • yup

  • @kempff95 i din't hear any voices........ it was a ghost friend

  • @kempff95 Indeed.

  • Very nice'

  • You're so rude. If you cannot feel what she gives, it's not a reason to say there's nothing to feel and desdain people.

  • @lelilelu That doesn't makes sense. If you can be pleased by a performance, you have the right to be annoyed too. It doesn't have anything to do with desdaining people

  • realmente amo a martha =)

  • Martha I LOVE YOU ..............

  • bello bellissimo bella musica

    wonderfull

  • Overwhelming!

  • Excelent performance by Martha Argerich. I have the complete CD and is is amazing.Listen to the fugues, the sound is really wonderfull!!!. Thank you Martha for so many beauty!!

  • Thank you for posting this. It's really a pleasure to listen this wonderful piece played by Martha Argerich.

  • Good performance but I still prefer angela Hewitt for this one... a little bit too machinal here

  • Hewitt is great! Argerich is great!- these two women are the best living interpreters of the greatest composer who ever lived! Gould was pos. better - but he's dead now. It's a great shame Argerich has not recorded more Bach! I'm sure Ms Hewitt thinks so too ... They are the two sexiest women on the planet, most women who are so jealous of them! You just show them a clip and it's 'change the subject', I guarantee if u have an educated woman sees it, she will flinch at the sight of either.

  • that was a musical cosmos !! 5*****

  • Gold or not Gould this is absolutely fantastic, Martha is marvelous also in Bach. Her tempos are probably a little fast but the result is amazing. The fugue is incredibly played... Bach would have enjoyed it.

  • Argerich es de

    Argentina

  • amazing. Bach is just amazing. every line is clear, and he weaves like Arachnae.

  • i fell in love with argerich for her powerful dynamism and her incomparable expression, and i am continually amazed by her -- this bach is not a style of music i would think she'd be particularly great at, and maybe gould is better, but there is something special about the clarity and the precision here. is there anything she can't play? love her.

  • Wouldn't it be rather dull if everyone played it the same way? I like the idea that we as human beings on our little planet floating in an immense void can be a little more free to choose how to play our musical instruments from time to time...there is enough beaurocracy in life already.

  • Agreed. In this life we all seem to strive to be the same from the fear it represents being different... being isolated... being unloved that we try to confine things in rules so that we have a standard to follow in this life. Yet, truly there is no structure in life: It is an illusion we create for ourselves so that we may "warp" the reality we so believe we live in. Funny how it works, neh? We humans like variation if we are open to it, although we are too fond of consistency, unfortunately.

  • @Teksunai Actually, humans thrive off habit, repetition and stability. Change can be pleasurable and refreshing, sometimes drastically needed, though, just like a pendulum returning to the equilibrium position, our lives inevitably reach a point of balance.

  • @ToulBoi That was part of what I was saying, thank you. ^-^ Just the universe itself, depending how you view it, is not predictable, we make it so by our patterns, and hope we follow the rules the best in what it is we care about, whether it be in a game, in musisc, etc. People are afraid of being different at times, thus being fond of consistency. Perhaps we'd be more creative if not for that. Thank you for your kindness in thinking I needed enlightenment. ^-^ And nice metaphor!

  • @Teksunai Yes, this tendency among humans is a sad reality, though to call it a fear would be incorrect. There is rationality behind why many are afraid to be different; simply because there is "good" difference and "bad" difference. Those who reach forward in society, into what the regular person sees as the unknown, can actually see, as they are a step ahead, they are in a whole different realm of thought. Unfortunately, for those who jump in blind, difference usually brings failure.

  • @ToulBoi This is an unbelievably pompous conversation, it stinks of selp importance and pretence. Don't try to sum up the universe, or the population of the earth. Listen to the incredible music.

  • @wanniator If you think I think this is important than you're a joke. Everyone already knows that not everyone is talented... it's called genetics.

  • @thisismymoniker ??????

  • Beautiful sound is one of the main characteristics of Argerich's playing. But maybe you are not sufficiently a connoisseur to appreciate !

  • just beautiful. i think such a sensitiveness in a bach-performance is rare.

    love it

  • BEAUTIUL!!!

  • some 40-55 years ago she was the most absolutely stunning lady you would've seen.

  • stunning woman, yes ?

lady? Not very lady-like vocabulary what I heard from her mouth while waiting to get her autograph in Berlin ( Autumn 1969 )

  • Did you get it!?!?!?!?!?! WOOOW

  • what did she say??

  • what did she say?

  • she used some not lady-like words and in an arrogant way , to a young guy in Spanish in the belief that, in Berlin, nobody would understand her.

Well, I did and it was the first time in my life trying to get an autograph from an artist and, stupid young me , I thought someone who could give me such bliss to my senses would not even go to the rest room.

I postponed my first autograph to few days later when I went to the same music hall to listen to a Venezuelan pianist : Judith Jaimes

    Ciao,
