I always thought KJ had the most "logical", effective cross over in the game.It was quick and 2 the point. The defender couldn't even react. The "Iverson cross over" doesn't really make sense imo. It's all for show. Not only that,he carries the ball when he does it.
KJ was the perfect pg imo.He had the mid range jumper 2 keep the D honest, and the speed 2 blow right pass you.I would tell all young,up and coming pg's 2 study his game.He was great on D as well.definitely 1 of the most underrated ever
You have to respect KJ as a player. Liquid fast, smart, competes, and of course, could dunk on you if he so pleased. That dunk on 7-4 Mark Eaton is the stuff of little man legend.
One of the greatest guards never to get his due. His name is forgotten when the game's greatest point guards are discussed, depite the fact that he passed like Stockton while scoring over 20 a game, was a lock-down defender, a fiery leader and could single-handedly take over a game like few ever could. If only his body better withstood injury--we're talking a *MUCH* more physical league back then--we'd be hearing his name alongside Magic and Stockton as the best to ever run the point.
Not to mention he's one of only two players(The other being Magic Johnson)to ever averaging at least 20 pts, 10 assists while shooting at least .500 field goal percentage. only him and Magic ever did that...And they both did it for 2 different seasons. That's speaks volume on where KJ belongs among the best
If he could have just stayed healthy a little longer---and if he had been more of a presence in the one finals he appeared in. He gave Chuck ZERO help against the Bulls.
Over the last four games of the 1993 NBA Finals, K.J. averaged 22.0 points (never scoring fewer than 19), 7.8 assists, 4.0 rebounds, a .459 field goal percentage, and a .909 free throw percentage while also playing extremely solid defense against Jordan in Games Three, Five, and Six (when head coach Paul Westphal assigned him to Air). Jordan still scored, but not quite as explosively or easily because he couldn't find his usual first-step against K.J.
K.J. did struggle in the first two games of the Finals while adjusting to the Bulls' suffocating defense (designed to stop him, not Barkley), but then again, Sir Charles shot under 40% from the field in both Games One (9-25, .360) and Six (7-18, .389). Although Barkley proved stellar in the other games, you'd expect an MVP power forward to not shoot under 40% from the field twice in the NBA Finals.
Also, K.J. set an NBA Finals record for minutes played in a game with 62 in Game Three, not coming out until less than half a minute remained in the third overtime and the Suns had the victory safely in hand. And he did all that while running the point (25 points, 9 assists, 7 rebounds, 2 steals) and guarding Jordan (44 points but on 43 shots) to boot.
Bill Simmons has really distorted the truth about K.J.'s play in the '93 Finals.
He defended Jordan like crazy giving him lots of pressure! Just cuz he didn't score 20 points a game in the Finals doesn't mean he didn't contribute. It's too bad everything gets overlooked when a player loses.
Speaking of great Suns dunks, anyone remember Majerle dunking on Manute Bol in the playoffs vs. Golden State? He was called for the charge, which was a crap call. But that's the second best PHX dunk of all time, for the pure laugh factor.
Magic was the best PG of all-time, but he always said that only two PGs ever outplayed him at any point in his career, and those 2 were Isiah Thomas and Kevin Johnson.
Had KJ not been so injury prone throughout his career, he'd be mentioned today in the same breath as Magic Johnson, etc. as one of the game's top 2 or 3 point guards of all time.
This is the greatest crowning in the history of basketball. Crossover, weave thru the defense then SMASH,B!TCH!!! This was 15 years ago and Hot Rod STILL can't live it down... GATTDAMN!!!
Pushed off he would have blocked him!

Top 10 point guard all time when he was healthy. amazing player.. not for his dunks, but for his whole game and personality.
jirking222 3 years ago 17
Statistically he's right up there with Isiah. If only he could have stayed healthy.
PhanatixDDH 3 years ago 8
... or better. K.J. shot much higher percentages from the field and the line and committed fewer turnovers with superior assists-to-turnover ratios.

@jirking222 He is All-Underrated 1st Team. A very tough competitor, who was unstoppable when healthy!

KJ belongs in the Hall. I don't care that he was always injured. 9 assists a game for his career.
